Loads of duplicate contacts
Soocial has just synchronised a LOAD of duplicate contacts into my nice, tidy address book. For some of them there are differences between the cards - an email address is in "work" instead of "other", for example. I thought this was what Soocial was supposed to fix?

Inappropriate?Hi Mike, that is not cool - you are right this is exactly what Soocial tries to prevent. Do you have MobileMe or other sync tools installed by any chance? Unfortunately that increased the risk of these sorts of dupes to magically spawn.
Something somewhere is behaving very badly - let's try to find out what. I can run a dedupe command for you in the mean time to solve some of this crazyness... just let me know to trigger it.
I’m anxious for your address book...
-
Inappropriate?I've not got a MobileMe account and none of the AddressBook.app sync options are checked. I asked a question about GMail here the other day and was told that something "odd" was going on with my sync so maybe that's got something to do with it?
I've disabled Soocial syncing for the time being and restored my contacts to their previous state so the address book disaster is averted but I love the idea of Soocial and I'd love to use it... If you think a dedupe will help then by all means pull the switch.
I’m calmer
-
Inappropriate?I will pile on with a "me too". I've had this issue for a few weeks, and have just been letting Soocial do it's thing (which is kind of funny to watch). I have about 80 copies of the same person in Gmail with absolutely no info except his name and company name (all the other info WAS there when this all started). Anyways, I was talking to Bart about it here http://getsatisfaction.com/soocial/to... and he said he would have somebody else take a look at it, but I haven't heard back. I finally removed the Address Book connection so I can straighten those contacts out and at least have one contact list that I can use. I've left the Gmail connection active in case it will help with the debugging.

Inappropriate?Hey Mike,
We did run the deduper. There should not be any duplicates left. Please take a look and let us know what you see.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate? It's definitely better but it's still not there. I have a fair few dupes (e.g. hazel culley and Hazel Culley) and there are dozens and dozens of blank contacts...
-
Inappropriate?still the same... i've got 3 and sometimes 4 versions of the same contacts ...
i also found that those numbers that get doubled in Gmail have 'mobile' in one version and 'other' in the 2nd...

Inappropriate?Hi, I hate to post again in another thread but I figured I would since I really would like to start using soocial as intended.
It took me a while just to get my gmail address book cleaned because of its horrible, HORRIBLE editing/managing interface, and now I am back to square one with the Duplicates.
Is there any way you can help with this?
So far this is the only thing preventing me from recommendations.
Thanks again, and I know your product is still in Beta, but these issues can really hurt if not fixed in time :)
I hope to see them fixed so I can continue to support Soocial.
Regards,
Corey
I’m annoyed I have to clean my address book..... again
-
Inappropriate? So did anything ever happen with this? I turned off syncing with AddressBook.app to avoid my primary contact list being ruined but my Gmail address book still contains loads of dupes. It was fairly clean before I turned on Soocial syncing so I'm not massively happy.
I’m irritated
-
Inappropriate?Same thing here boat loads of dupes. This seems like one of the basic things you would want to have working before you even released in Alpha. Are they even working on it?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Lets be fair: synchronization is a really tough challenge. The proof is nobody managed to do it correctly until now! Standards like SyncML have design flaws, and are not widely used. Every service is using different representation of data. And when you add encoding (if only everybody could use UTF-8...) and some other extra fancy stuff this can quickly become a nightmare.
I agree that we could have expected this to work a little bit better. Loosing data is for example not acceptable. But the backups are here to prevent critical loss, just some time is lost. Keep in mind this is beta code and you're using it for free... -
Inappropriate?Agreed - synchronisation is definitely a hard problem.
Put it another way though: we're providing free feedback for what will presumably become a paid-for product. Without us there would have to be a few extra Soocial Q&A, marketing and product guys plus a room full of hardware, new and old, for testing. It's beta code and we're using it for free; it's costing me time and I don't have too much of that to spare.
I actually don't mind that there are bugs but I'm finding GetSatisfaction to be very unsatisfying. None of my issues have been resolved yet and staff seem to have moved on to newer comments. It's fair enough - they have jobs to do, after all, but the customer dissatisfaction echo chamber isn't helping my morale as a user.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Mike, adarsh, olivier, casey and all you other guys helping us.
Mike, you are right that you guys are helping us immensely by testing our service. We don't know yet in what timing we will be introducing our paid accounts and neither in the exact form. But we will be giving users like you guys a massive discount for helping us like you are.
As far as these duplicate issue go, please understand that there are many source for these dupes - very often part of a crazy love-triangle of sync tools. Where users are only using Soocial as a sync tool we have generally seen much better results than what you are experiencing. However like you guys it also happens that sometimes when you're only using Soocial things still get so messy as that our service becomes unusable.
However I can assure you that the duplicate issue has our top priority - what we are working on right now should improve the speed and reliability of the de-duplication and should also prevent it.
Thanks Olivier for defending us. I hope that we get to a stage soon where that won't be necessary and that people like Mike won't get disappointed with the slow progress.
I’m anxious to have the duplicate issue solved.

Inappropriate?@stefan
Many thanks for your reply. To be clear: I know that you guys are trying to tackle a hard problem and I know that bugs are inevitable. My frustration comes from not knowing what's going on. The last thing I posted was a long description of my workflow (after being asked by one of you chaps) and I didn't hear anything in return. It might be something that GetSatisfaction is missing - a way to mark reports as "in progress" or similar.
I’m placated
-
Inappropriate?Hey Mike,
Here's my two cents. I want to thank you too for your work. I am one of the guys that should have responded.
About GSF. We did get a different package as of last week. So now we can see who needs attention. I am really happy with that.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?@bart:
That sounds grand. So is work being done on the duplicate contacts in GMail problem that I have? If your priorities are elsewhere it's cool but I don't want to waste my time cleaning up if Soocial is going to keep adding dupes...
-
Inappropriate? It seems the issue I've got is I'm using two different instances of outlook, trying to sync against gmail's address book and the two outlooks keep getting filled up with dupes. Soocial itself looked as if it had a solid list of nonduplicated people but now it's synching against the dupes in teh wto outlooks which now look slightly different because i tried to use one outlook to condense the duplicate records. ugh. I legitimately have 1500 contacts or so, but soocial now has 2300 and gmail hasn't accepted most of them, which is driving me crazy because my numbers are in soocial as an aggregate of both the outlooks and I embarked on this whole adventure to make sure I had all my numbers in my new g1 android phone (syncs w/ the outlook address book).
At this point, the dupes are less concerning than the fact gmail's address book hasn't yet seen a complete phone delivery.
I uninstalled one of the outlooks sync tools thinking that less competition there might make things better, but haven't had time to attempt much of a cleanup yet. Wish gmail or soocial had a 'merge these records' tool akin to outlook.
Cheers,
Luke
I’m forlorn
-
Inappropriate?Olivier and Mike,
Just did start the deduper for you both.
Should get rid of some junk. (might take a few hours for it to complete.)
Anything left after that we can't fix. You will have to clean it up yourselves.
Sorry...
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?@bart:
Has the dedupe and sync run? I still have some duplicates in the Soocial web interface and my GMail contacts don't appear to have changed at all...
I’m waiting and seeing
-
It did run... Got rid of some. I am afraid there is nothing more I can do... -
Inappropriate?I am having the same problem. Every time Soocial synchronizes my contacts I get loads more and the address is being duplicated inside each contact.
I have disabled soocial while handling this problem, but I still will get a message asking me to solve sync problems every few minutes, which is very annoying.
I have just used the feature to restore my contacts from the backup made after the first Sync. Hope this solves the dupes -
You don't seem to have any contact now? Did you remove them again? -
Inappropriate?I didn't remove the contacts, that happened after I tried to load the backup.
-
Inappropriate?Mhmm, I see the reason.
I downloaded the backup file to my computer and opened it and it was empty. -
An empty backup is not really helpful. Are you really screwed now? -
Inappropriate?Queue the broken record... Same problem here, no other syncing going on, and if I try to clean-up the contacts through Outlook '07, it just seems to make things worse. Also, the tray icon always seems to display partial sync results, ie. "Receiving contacts 19/143" but never changes (unless it crashes, which is quite often).
-
We know Isaac, next version takes longer than we hoped. Lots of issues. -
Inappropriate?I'm using a blackberry. Even when I don't sync the gmail contacts keep duplicating themselves. Is there any way to just sync the calender and not the contacts\?
-
Mike, I am a bit puzzled. You use the Blackberry Gmail sync app to sync with Gmail? And also sync Gmail with Soocial right?
Are there duplicates in Soocial too? I can maybe solve that. You can send you username to support (at soocial dot com)
