Lost contacts in gmail
Hi folks! After syncing my mac and gmail address books I noticed that I lost many contacts in gmail (they were still present in the mac address book). As I need all these contacts also in gmail, I removed the gmail connection from my soocial account and restored my contacts. Do you have any suggestions or know anything about it?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Ralf

Inappropriate?Hi Ralf,
let me have a look at this. Could have to do with GMail's new rules
( http://www.zoitz.com/archives/36 ) or something else.
I'll get back to you. -
Inappropriate?Hi Daniel,
in the meantime I managed to get a good syncing result by avoiding fields in addressbook's contacts that gmail might not support. I'll keep track of it. Unfortunately, there has only been one sync between soocial and gmail since this afternoon (it seemed more frequent before)... Thanks anyhow and I hope it helps!
By the way, is there a list of fields which are supported and which are not? -
Inappropriate?Hi Ralf,
The fields we're supporting for GMail are the following:
- Name
- Address
- Company name
- Telephone numbers
- Email addresses
- Notes
We're working on adding instant messenger fields and Groups.
Soocial is built as such that it should not remove fields from a contact that a connection doesn't support.
For example, at the moment our GMail connection doesn't support instant messenger fields. A contact that's updated in GMail will return to Soocial without an IM entry even though the Soocial version of the contact does have an IM field. In this case Soocial knows not to delete the IM field for the updated contact because GMail never knew it was there in the first place and as such could not have deleted it. Soocial will only update the fields that the connection is able to edit, all other fields are kept intact.
It would help if you could email me a list of the fields that you think are causing trouble, feel free to email me at simon at soocial.com -
Hey Soocial folks
This is not answered. This is a serious bug that you need to take seriously. Loosing contacts lead me me loose confidence in the product. I know this is beta but you need to take this issue seriously. -
Inappropriate?Hi Beans,
Thanks for pointing that out, this issue has been resolved quite some time ago but I've forgotten to update this thread with that info.
Instant Messengers and Groups have been added, we're syncing those to and from GMail.
Does that answer your question? Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
cheers, Simon -
HI Simon
This answers the question but it does not solve the bug. I still have 20 fewer contacts in my Gmail group than I do in my Apple Distribution List. So, the feature is nice to have but it is not functioning properly yet. -
Inappropriate?Hi Notimpressed,
Could you have a look at my reply here http://getsatisfaction.com/soocial/to..., it might be that the contacts you are missing are missing because they have an email address that is already assigned to another contact in Gmail which is something Google will not allow. -
Inappropriate?Simon
The contacts that were deleted were already in Gmail. I had deleted all my contacts from Mac Address book because Gmail contacts are my reference contacts, meaning that I only made changes at Gmail and nowhere else. So, the duplicate email issue should not be an issue for me. You have a real problem. -
Inappropriate?Hi Notimpressed,
Thanks for taking the time to reply, sorry I wasn't aware of the fact that they were coming from your Gmail account to begin with. In that case, yes, that isn't supposed to happen.
Please allow me to have a look at your account history, including your backups to determine what happened. To do that, I will need your Soocial username, please mail it to simon at soocial.com so I can have a look.
Thanks and sorry for the trouble. -
Inappropriate?Hi - just chiming in, this issue is definitely not resolved. I too still have contacts 'disappearing' from Gmail
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Hi S_m_i
Sorry for the trouble, I'm looking into Notimpressed's contacts as he sent me his username for Soocial, if you could do the same I can have a look. Please refer to this topic so I can track your email back to whats going on.
cheers, Simon
I’m going to get to the bottom of this
-
Inappropriate?I also have fewer contacts in my Gmail hen in soocial. And no it is not because same email adresses twice.
-
Inappropriate?Hi everyone,
Sorry for the trouble, I'm investigating the issue but haven't gotten it fixed yet. I'll get back to you here when I've got some progress to report.
The company says
this solves the problem
-
Inappropriate?Ok, I traced part of the problem back to a very recent bug in Google's Contacts API.
Part of the fix will be to stop batching requests to Google, downside is that it'll make the syncs slower. I'm working on it. -
i've recently done a sync between an iphone and Address book contacts through itunes. In addition there was a sync between google calendar and the calendar on the iphone. lastly, i synced my gmail with the iphone. all of this was done following the instructions on the google site (and not by using the GMAIL icon on the iphone).
i had 489 contacts in my gmail after weeding it down from 1139. I moved 184 of these into 'my favorites' and exported them as a vcf. This I loaded into address book and it served as the source for the sync with the iphone.
when I came back to gmail today...i've found that the 489 total is no longer there. instead it only has the 184 my favorites. In addition all my created groups have been emptied.
any idea what has happened here?? -
I'm not sure I understand your sync setup but I believe this happened:
By restoring the "favorites" vcf in your address book you basically reset your entire address book to those 184 contacts. Our Soocial sync client, will pickup those changes and issue delete "statements" for your 489 contacts and create "statements" for the "new" 184. Once those changes are synced to Soocial we synced them to your Gmail account.
If you're not using the Mac client or you if you believe something is wrong please contact us via support@soocial.com (and include your username) so that we can take a look at the logs. -
Inappropriate?Thank you for your diligence Simon. Frankly, syncing contacts need not be a real time application for me. It is nice that you promise real time but I would just fine with sync over night. Coming from the dark ages of no syncing and having my contacts live on separate Islands (without Internet), this is an Oasis.

Inappropriate?I am having a serious problem with gmail groups of contact. In some of them I just get, when using the group, an empty field. Say for example I have
"John Pearl" <j.pearl@gmail.com>, "Tom Noise" <tom.noise@gmail.com>
When using the group I get in my destination field
"John Pearl" <j.pearl@gmail.com>, "Tom Noise" <>
This is happening more and more, making groups very difficult for me to use.
Thanks!
