We fixed the issues with the S40!--oh I'm so glad I don't have to spend more time on this. I deployed a fix today. We do some crazy tricks to make a phone that's stuck with a broken soocial-devinf in it's cache sync again. This means you don't have to change a single setting (hurray), it'll work automagically. Everyone with an S40 should try to sync now; do it! :-D
Please report any s40-syncing problems that might arise on this page again.
I’m happy

The confusion is that the SMS configuration instructions only show how to install the Sync connection. After this you still need to go and Sync.
As Aart shows you need to:
1. Select "Menu"
2. Select "Contacts"
3. Select "Synchronize all"
Alternatively you can sync by:
1. Select "Menu"
2. Select "Settings"
3. Select "Connectivity"
4. Select "Data transfer"
5. Select "Server sync"
Which is much longer but the official way of doing things.
I’m glad we understand how to sync now.

Inappropriate?Hi Aart, it looks like you did manage a sync, did you change the internet connection settings on your phone? What did you do to manage the sync?
I’m glad to see you were able to sync
-
Inappropriate? No, I did not touch the internet connection because this works fine.. To sync I went to:
1. Select "Menu"
2. Select "Contacts"
3. Select "Syncronise all" -

Inappropriate?Hi, i have the same problem here, and still it doesn't work with your solution Stefan.
Is there no other option. My internet connection works(When i use opera mini or eBuddy) -
Inappropriate?Hi Cas and Joel,
There is a bug in the Series 40 Nokia's (which include Nokia 6230, 6133 etc) that we have not been able to work around yet to sync successfully. We have been able to narrow down the problem and are working on it.
It might be this problem you are running into but only if 1) you receive the text and install went perfect, 2) You know for sure that your internet connection on the phone is working 3) you trigger a sync 4) it says "Data transfer not possible" or something similar.
I’m confident we'll crack this Nokia bug
-
Inappropriate?I think that my problem is related; using a Nokia 5310 (Xpressmusic); I get the error:
"Data Transfer not possible"
It goes through the following steps:
Menu > Settings > Sync and Backup > Server Sync > Server Sync:
"Please Wait" > "Synchronize data with Soocial Soocial? Contacts" > I Choose "Yes" > "Initializing Synchronization" > quickly flashes "Finishing Synchronization" > "Data Transfer not possible"
Two things: I Googled, and found that there is a bug with Nokia phones and SyncML, and also; you can apply a server-side "fix" (workaround).

I can email back and forth with a dev if you guys want to real-time debug this
I’m concerned, but hopeful
-
Wow, Josh you rock! We'd love you to help us debug this. Drop us a line at tijn@soocial.com -
Hey thats' great man! Hehe, that second post contains two links to our discussion on the Nokia forum. Too bad that MarkSwanson doesn't indicate exactly what he changed... -
Well, he rewrote the parser to a newer version of syncML, perhaps version 2.0. -
Are you sure about that? The forum thread above seems very much like there was something specific about the nokia bug that he fixed with a "if nokia, then do this" type of parser -
To Quote him:
"I have created a new SyncML parser that handles these issues " -
Tijn is writing a new WBXML parser as we speak :) -
I'm writing a WBXML-writer :-) -
And you said it was a parser! You making me look like a fool, yo! -
So actually it was not the data that was sended by the phones that was wrong, but the response of the server to the phone? -
That's correct, Cas -
Inappropriate?I have the exact same issue as described, using a 6500 classic. Any news yet on a fix?
I’m kinda bummed I didn't get my "happy moment" :P
-
About 1-2 weeks ago they where working on the problem. A developer told me the found the problem and are working on a solution right now.
Try the soocial campfire, there might be a developer or some other person that can give you an accurate heads-up about the progress of the solution. -
Inappropriate?Status update!
We did come a long way. It is taking longer than we thought though. Please bear with us.
-
How is the progress of the fix? Still not ready? My phone is not very stable any more, and i want to backup it. I can use an other solution for this, but soocial gives me the option to send them to my mac. Because Sync doesn't support my phone. -
Inappropriate?Hey Cas,
A lot of work has already gone in to the WBXML writer. Tijn came a long way, but it is not completely finished yet. We want this as bad as you. We will notify you here when it is ready and we can sync s40 phones
I’m unsure
-
When there need to be testing done, just give me a call! No make that a mail;) -
Inappropriate?I have the same problem with my Nokia E65. Installation goes fine. I follow sync instructions, I get "connection error" message. My phone does get online using my network (Vodafone UK) connection and also via wifi. After the attempt it appears to have synced as there is a last synced time, but it hasn't.
I have backed up my contacts just in case. I am also trying your main rival service, but I think they only sync between phones, not GMail, Address Book etc. but that does sync my phone easily and automatically.
I’m thankful and confident it will work one day.
-
Hey Ian,
The problem people are having in this topic is related to Nokia phones with the S40 OS. Your E65 has the S60 OS. Would you mind either starting a new topic or send an e-mail to support (at soocial dot com) -
yeah, this is really different from the s60-story since your E65 was able to sync at least once. However, I will make sure the workaround that we wrote last week for s40-phones will be enabled for your phone too. (It's a pity that phones don't tell us they're s40-devices.) Please let us know if this improves your syncing situation --in another topic :-p. -
I can't find any Ian with a Nokia E65 in our database. I can't do anything without some info on your phone. Do you have a soocial-alter ego?/what's your username? -
yikes. Replace s60 with s40 and s40 with s60 in my first reply. I'm confusing even myself. -
Inappropriate? There is an Ian, I think "ian" is my username, I am logged into Soocial now and at the top left it says " Hello ian, Log out ", and I have 91 contacts. Also I have never been able to sync my E65 and I get the same result as described by others above, except the error says "connection error", it records every attempt as a successful sync. My contacts came from my OS X Address Book.
-
ah, I searched for a case sensitive match to "Ian"... the amount of Ians in soocial is remarkable. Thanks for reporting, I'll see what I can do. (I'm reserving the next 30 to 60 minutes for your phone.) -
I thought I was lucky to get that username! -
ha, you were right after all. It's just us being confused. Since "Cas Wolters" posted this topic *is* about the wbxml-bug on s40's and apparently some s60's. I think your phone has the same problem as all s40's; at least it looks like it does. (I looked it up in our database.) I'm on the wbxml-bug. It's the only big ticket on my plate for the next week but it's impossible to give a good ETA for. -

Inappropriate? With my 6500 classic, I still get the same sequence of "Initialising synchronisation", "Finalising synchronisation", "Data transfer not possible". So, not change in behaviour. I tried re-adding the phone via the website, did not help.
-
Inappropriate? Is it possible to change the sync-server address in your phone? If so, could you append "?x=1" to it? This will do nothing except circumvent a certain cache in your phone that probably contains info about our sync-server in a format that's not readable by an S40.
-
Inappropriate?Same problem.
I can't delete or change server settings. I downloaded the configuration settings again.
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Cas, Giel, you seem to have the same phones for which my fix is not working. That's good for figuring out what the ☠☔♘☹ is wrong. I think I found it.
To elaborate (might be boring). You're phone doesn't tell Soocial what kind of phone it is. It never sent a <devinf>. My fix was relying on this behaviour and it seemed to work for every s40 we could get our hands on. However, the good news is that you already told soocial what kind of phone you have and I can trigger the fix on this info too.
Anyhow, we're deploying the fix as we speak. Please try again soon and thanks for complaining as it gives us a chance to improve :-P.</devinf>
I’m hopeful
-
Any further details on when a fix might be possible.
Another 6500 classic user looking forward to using the site. -
Yeah, we figured out that the 6500c doesn't do SyncML 1.1 and Soocial doesn't do SyncML 1.2, so no dice. We'll have to push for SyncML 1.2 support in Soocial for it to work :) -

Inappropriate?Just tried again, still the same (also with a different ?x= added, I'm at 5 now :) ). Let me know if/when I can try again, or try something else.
I’m bummed that it still doesn't work, but happy that it's actively being worked on.
-
Oh btw, for me at least the technical details are interesting, not boring ;) -
Inappropriate?To add some things up:
Support for the Nokia 6500 Classic is not coming until Soocial is going to upgrade to syncML 1.2?
If so, how long does development take? New phones will be more and more using this i guess, so it will further increase the support for more phones with soocial. -
Inappropriate?Hi Cas,
we just had a planning session this afternoon, and we hope to have SyncML 1.2 support within two weeks. Keep you posted!
I’m happy we're finally getting to support SyncML 1.2
-
Nice! -
I am looking forward to it:) If necessary i can take part of early alpha tests with my 6500C, afterall this is a model that is causing a lot of trouble;) -
Inappropriate? How did the planning session end? Is there a date for the new syncML protocol? :-D
-
Inappropriate?Any more news?
-
Inappropriate?I'm the one to implement it...
and I got called away to fix other things (*cough*blackberry*cough*) and more things in our data model and how we handle updates from devices. I'm sorry about it guys! Those other things really had priority (and still do). SyncML 1.2 is really high on my personal wish list.
I’m sorry
