Problems syncing with special characters
Just set up my mac address book to sync with Soocial. I normally save my married friends as one contact:
First Name: Jane & John
Last Name: Doe
Mobile: +1-xxx-xxx-xxxx (this is Jane's cell no)
Work: +1-yyy-yyy-yyyy (this is John's cell no)
Home: +1-zzz-zzz-zzzz (home no)
When I sync to soocial it seems to work fine (801 contacts in my address book, 801 uploaded to soocial). However, when I sync back a few hours later, I see 849 contacts. All the contacts with special characters in the first name have been duplicated (I also lump all my doctors as Firstname: Dr. David Lastname: Smith instead of Prefix: Dr.).
The duplicates show up as
First Name: Jane
Last Name: & John Doe
Other: +1-xxx-xxx-xxxx (this is Jane's cell no)
Work: +1-yyy-yyy-yyyy (this is John's cell no)
Home: +1-zzz-zzz-zzzz (home no)
which is different from what I had synced up to soocial. HELP!

Hi Sundiver,
Assuming you're using the GMail sync I'm fairly sure as to what the problem can be. Gmail internally makes no difference in first or last name, it just stores them all as a single 'name' field. When we sync to GMail we append the last name to the first name and send that as the "name" for GMail.
Now when this contact is updated in GMail we try and split the single "name" we get from GMail into a first and last name, this doesn't always work smoothly, especially with names like "Jane & John".
I think I have a solution to this problem though, well at least a fix that'll make this problem occur less often, and I can fix that within a couple of days.
Until then you can try and turn off the GMail sync and restore a backup into your Soocial account (this can be done via de "backups" link in the top menu).
If you have a lot of duplicates we can run a deduper over your contacts to sort them out.
Let me know how else I can help and sorry for the trouble
I’m working on de-perturbing this

Inappropriate? If this helps at all I am having the same problem not just with special characters but also just when I call the couple "Jane and John" (first name) "Smith" (second name). It returns them, after sync, as "Jane" (first name) "and John Smith" (second name).
Happy to hear you are working on it though.
Oh and loving the whole project thanks guys... -
Inappropriate?Hi Matthew,
Thanks for reporting it, yeah it is the same issue. It splits every name into first and last at the first space it detects, it's simple but stupid and needs to be fixed.
Thanks, glad you're liking Soocial
I’m working on the GMail name splitting stuff

Inappropriate?I am still having issues with this - any developments?
-
Inappropriate?Although we haven't forgotten you and the GMail name splitting issue we did have to deal with somewhat bigger issues right now. Sorry matthew I guess we will have to Beta test your patience :-)
-
Inappropriate?Any developments on this - it is the one thing stopping me using soocial full time. Thanks for all your work - matthew

Inappropriate?Other things need our attention first. When we have fixed this we will let you know here. Soory it is taking longer than we thought. We have been working really hard on releasing some clients that are almost done!
I’m happy there is progress

Inappropriate?Hi guys, I see you have done loads of work lately and Soocial is starting to look better and better. I can't wait to use it. I was just wondering if this issue was solved yet (i.e. sync splitting names incorrectly)??
Thanks for your work.
Matthew

Inappropriate?hey matthew,
We did not solve that yet....sorry. We will let you know here when we do. -
Inappropriate?Any more news on this issue, I see it's been another 7months that have passed!
-
Inappropriate?matthew,
yes and no. We did change the behavior a bit. At the moment the behavior is
First word = First name.
Last word = Last name.
Everything in between = Middle/additional name(s)
I know that does not solve the & issue. We will probably be able to do this soon. It hasn't been a very pressing issue for us, or at least less pressing than lots of other things.
But it needs to happen because it is proper behavior and it really should not be to hard.
Thank you for bringing it to our attention again.
