Soocial is trying to delete 95% of my contacts!
The Apple Sync tool just popped up and said that Soocial wanted to delete 95% of my address book (and no, it's not adding any contacts back, so these aren't merged ones)!

Inappropriate?Hey Peter,
Scary! I will take a look at it but I need help from my colleague who's underway to the office. Bear with us for a little while. I'll get back to you ASAP.

Inappropriate?I also get that same popup, really scary! I have now Soocial pref pane disabled, otherwise i keep getting that popup.

Inappropriate?Hi Peter,
We've had some downtime last night because of maintenance that needed to be done on our database server. It seems like during that time your mac tried to sync and failed because our sync server was down. Internally your mac registered this as a failed sync causing it to fall back to a so-called "slow sync", which reinitializes the sync from scratch by sending all of the contacts to Soocial again as if it was the first time. This slow sync started this morning at ~ 8 AM.
Soocial recognised the contacts that your mac sent as duplicate of contacts that already exist in Soocial in the first place from the previous sync sessions, as a result it had them merged with the existing (original) contact in Soocial. In the following sync it'll send a delete for the contact coming from your mac and an Add for the original, basically replacing it with the same contact. It's annoying but it is a result of how Apple's sync services and the synchronization protocol work.
We're working on making these sync-sessions more transparent so that you, the user, can get a better idea of whats going on and where scary changes like your 95% deletes originate from. The delete is a lot less scary if you know there's an add for the same contact following right after it.
For now, you can make a backup of your contacts in Soocial at http://www.soocial.com/backups to make sure you have a good set to fallback to and continue with the sync. From what I see in our system you should receive ~ 580 deleted contacts, 8 updated contacts and 745 added contacts.
cheers, Simon -
Inappropriate?Thank you for your fast and adequate answer!
-
Inappropriate?Simon, you're correct, the plugin says my last sync was at 7:53 AM. I let it delete the contacts and now I'm left with just 14 contacts. I tried to sync after this to get the 'new' contacts but the sync doesn't give any new contacts.

Inappropriate?Hi Peter,
Very odd, I'm investigating what's going on with your account then as that shouldn't happen. I could force an update of all your contacts but could you first try turning off Soocial in the preference pane, then removing the OS X connection from your connections screen at http://www.soocial.com/connections and then turning Soocial back on in the preference pane?
Somewhere Soocial has started to think that your mac still has contacts it doesn't actually have anymore, removing the connection removes all this prior knowledge of the sync and *should* have you back in shape.
Let me know if that works for you.
I’m sorry about the hassle

Inappropriate?I did have the same problem as Peter, my address book was also empty after the sync.
But thanks, your answer did the job for me. Hopefully also for Peter.
-
Inappropriate?Yes, that fixed the empty address book problem. Unfortunately some of my groups are now empty. Does Soocial actual track address book groups? I imagine you do, because half of them do have the correct contacts in them.

Hi guys, I'm still having this problem. Is there any way to restore previous group memberships for contacts? -
Peter, We have succes fully ignored this question for a long time now. We should not throw that information on groups away. But if it is gone there is no way to put it back. sorry. -
Inappropriate?I have run into the same issue and after turning off the pref pane, removing the connection and turning back on the pref pane. Now that Soocial has synced back, I now have duplicates of those 5% that weren't deleted on my mac (which ends up being more than 50). Is there a trick for weeding those out?
