sync was going to duplicate contacts (I think)
I have my soocial account tied only to gmail and mac AddressBook. I just got a notification from sync that said it'd be changing more than 5% of my addresses if I let it continue, so I checked it out. It was going to add most of my contacts, again, with the same names and such -- most of them had phone numbers in AddressBook and it was going to add the same person with an email address coming from gmail. There were also some it was going to remove from AddressBook that had phone numbers but no email address, but I don't want them removed -- I'd rather have them added to gmail. I canceled the sync and I'm assuming I'm still okay data-wise.

Let's try to see what's happening in your Soocial account. A quick explanation of what happens in order to give us some context to look for this problem.
When you first sync with Soocial from any source (devices or webapp) we get all those contacts and check for duplicates, then remove duplicates where necessary. It seems to me that what you experienced is part of this behaviour. We will need to see exactly what contacts were added and or changed to be able to find any possible bugs.
If you could would it be possible to send us some screenshots next time this happens and/or send us the contacts themselves so we can see what is screwing up your beautiful sync joy.
