Aka. They come in from gmail and highrise, but the gmail contacts don't automatically go out to highrise and vice versa. Is this true?
correct, unless the contact is marked with a category of 'work' or is in the 'work'-group on OS X (it's a different wording for the same thing really).
Wouldn't this be one-way sync essentially?
IMO it would almost be the same as one-way sync but there is an important difference. Changes to a contact that's also in Highrise will propagate to Highrise. I think David doesn't want that.
We don't offer a one-way sync option yet and I can't tell you if or when we will.
I’m hoping this made things clear

Soocial offer full two-way sync with GMail, we poll GMail every hour to get changes and push changes immediately if you change something in Soocial or your other devices. "Immediately" here means that we add a sync job to our queue, this might still take a while to get through to GMail.
I’m glad to do more than Plaxo here

Inappropriate? Is everything full two-way sync, or do you offer or plan to offer one-way sync?
I'd like to keep my Highrise account clean for work, so I'd like things to come in to Soocial, but not back out to Highrise.
Another benefit of this one way is that you could have gmail and highrise both come in to Soocial, so people could see what the merge looks like before its pushed back out to each of the applications. -
Good idea, why don't you start a new idea with that so we can discuss it further with other people too. ;-) -
Inappropriate?Tijn told me in another discussion that your contacts, once you set up a highrise or gmail engine, get sent to Soocial, but Soocial doesn't send them back out automatically.

I guess I'm just really confused as to what Soocial is actually going to do with my contacts, though I suspect its something that will eventually be very useful!

Inappropriate? So what happens when I make a gmail contact a "work" contact. Does it merge right away with any similar highrise contacts marked as "work"?
-
Inappropriate?Yes.
...And all highrise contacts are automatically marked as 'work'. -
Inappropriate? Is there a way to set the gmail contacts to work in bulk? Its a bit of a pain to click on each individual contact and click the checkbox.
-
Inappropriate?Evbart, just to clarify - we are currently working on upgrading our contact editor to support multi edits and also allow for a better way to tag contacts as work and decide how they are synced with Highrise.
Hopefully we'll be able to get this update deployed by the end of August.
I’m !

Inappropriate?I would like the security of ONLY importing my contacts to soocial, until I am satisfied that merging all of my contact sources won't mess up my contacts (from Gmail, or from ANY contact source)
I’m optimistic
