grouping algorithm
Regularly, the startpage of soup.io is packed with pics or links from one person, if several are uploaded at the same time. So my suggestion is to group the entries on the start page, so that it looks more interesting.
For example: Don't show more than 1 entry from one person at a time and not more than 5 out of 20 from a person.
Or so. What do you think?
(This suggestion is only for the start page, not for the friends-soups.)

What's definitely on the todo list is grouping of multiple consecutive posts of the same type by the same person – especially imports: ie, when someone posts 50 images to Flickr or marks 20 sites as cool on StumbleUpon. This would probably be applied to all pages: individual Soups, friends views, and the front page.
For the front page, we are thinking about some kind of interestingness algorithm – what you proposed sounds like a good starting point for that.
It might even be a good idea to not show imported posts at all on the front page at some point, since local posts are often more interesting – we'll have to try that out.
Those features are a few more weeks away, though.
Unfortunately we're quite busy moving into a proper office right now, so there's a slight delay in development.
