Posts not appearing on the front page
Since a couple of days, my posts don't appear on the front page of Soup anymore. My Soup can be found at http://morgaine.soup.io/ I post lots of stuff, all kinds of stuff, and at first I wondered whether it was because I also post erotica (no porn though, and always tasteful, or so I think), but I see plenty of other posts from others appear that contain nudity as well. I am just wondering why my post don't seem to appear anymore. Any ideas?

Hi Morgaine,
I agree that everything I've seen you post is in good taste, and we're generally very open to people using Soup for any kind of content.
However, because of some complaints we received from users and because we'd rather not deal with any possible legal issues (local laws for the protection of minors), we've decided to try to keep the front page "safe for work".
The only way we can do this right now is by setting certain accounts to unsafe... this filtering only applies to the public front page though, posts will still show up completely unfiltered in friends and friends-of-friends lists, and of course on your own page.
We should allow posters to set certain individual posts to nsfw, have a setting for signed-in users to chose if they wish to see them, and/or personal blacklists for filtering – but until those things aren't implemented, I'm afraid we're going to have to keep up this system.
I hope you're not too disappointed with that reply... we love your background image customization over here! Let us know what you think.

Christopher, I consider the specific complaint you linked to bogus (not necessarily per se, but in the context of this discussion, more on that in a bit). I had seen it shortly after it had been posted and it made me curious, so I used the endless view of the main www.soup.io page to scroll through hundreds and hundreds of post, approx. 24 hours' worth of them, and found exactly _one_ user who'd posted quite erotic nude pix, but no genitalia or hardcore stuff. Apart from those, there was _one_ case of full frontal nudity; that one was a drawing, though. All other naked creatures I'd seen were animals, mostly cats. Now obviously not every day is exactly like this, and Morgaine posted stuff that sometimes went a little bit further, so, yes, there is a chance people will see stuff that offends them. It's a _small_ chance, of the kind of magnitude where automatic filtering doesn't really help and semi-automatic filtering isn't all that effective either. But the actual reason why I said that one complaint is bogus is that you certainly don't get "dozens and dozens of nudes" in your soup, unless you're subscribing to the 'wrong kind of friends'. If you'd like them to change, you'll have to talk to them, not to soup. Which is probably the intent behind gem's post anyway.
There _is_ a more significant number of picture posts that show a lot of skin on soup, but then the same is true of Vienna bus stops. No big deal IMHO.
Are you really sure this filtering limits your legal liability; did you check with a lawyer/expert? I understand that in many common situations, it's worse to redact content and let off-limits stuff slip through than not doing any redacting at all. Also, it might help to lay out the rules of what is and isn't allowed on soup and make the existence and URL of that document obvious to people signing up.
I think a system for flagging content as 'mature' is a good idea. You might even use your copious spare time (j/k) to implement this on two levels: People voluntarily flagging their own posts as appropriate, and people flagging _other_ posters' stuff. In your options, you could then choose a level of protection: self-flagged only, flagged by one (or more) of your friends, flagged by anyone. Of course in another dimension there are also two levels: filtering per post or per postER. Lots of work, I'm afraid, so I can totally understand that it'll take a while and that you chose to take interim measures.
In the long term, though, I'd like the unpublicised stealth censorship to stop. And once the flagging feature is in place, please don't call it 'NSFW'. I suppose most people who use the term attempt to do so tongue-in-cheek, but it's still ripe with cowardly hypocrisy. I'd choose 'mature'. I assume you'd want to make this opt-out rather than op-in; if so, please make it clear to new users who sign up (plus the currently registered ones) that it is there and can be changed. Not everyone checks the preferences dialog regularly.

Inappropriate?I think that the account settings should have an Include / Exclude NSFW postings. Either the post to soup should have a tickbox 'NSFW' or the complete account should have this setting.
After that, the frontpage either shows or hides the erotic material. I for one regret the vanishing of this material from the frontpage and would love to see it back
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Hello Christopher,
thank you for the reply. On the one hand I understand the team at Soup took this decision, even though it is rigorous, and hopefully temporary. I do wonder though how you decide which accounts get banned from the front page. I'm asking because I still see erotic images appear. Can we 'report' users or anything? Right now, it seems rather arbitrary. The posts of Xiffy who posted just above for example do make it to the front page, while his posts often are erotic in nature as well.
This complaint you're linking to, well, each is entitled to their opinion I guess. To play the gender card however ... let's say I wouldn't. I'm a woman myself, and I've studied gender studies as a minor (I'm a sociology / anthropology person), yet I'm still able to enjoy artistic nudity, '(half-)naked women' don't bother me one bit. I have to say, I wouldn't be bothered by pictures of 'male gay couple nudes' either, and I bet some gay people might take offense at that post. Oh well ... I guess some people are easily offended, and you can't please everyone.
I do hope you'll get a more refined filtering system in place soon. Perhaps it could be about more than just nudity. Frankly, all those posts in Chinese, Japanes, Vietnames and other languages I don't understand, are kind of useless to me, and I'd rather not see them.
Thank you for the compliment about the customisation. The background is for fun, I'm happier with the wider column:
#content {
width: 600px;
}
as the images I post to Vox, and import to Soup always were cut off. I'm sure a lot more interesting things can be done with CSS, if only I wasn't always short of time :-)
Kind regards,
Morgaine

Inappropriate?My posts (benevolence.soup.io) don't appear on the front page of Soup even though that text and non-nsfw content. Should I consider that staff of Soup have accepted some real stupid ideas such as filtering Non-English languages?
Hi, Morgaine, you don't understand too much things that existing here is just not for you, so just ignore it if you don't understand. All right?

Inappropriate?I never said I didn't understand the decision the Soup team made, I merely ventilated my opinion. Last time I checked I still was entitled to my own opinion, just as you are. There really is no need to assume I don't understand, and there's no need to use a patronising 'All right?' with me either. Thank you and have a nice day.
-
Inappropriate?Of "be entitled to" is good, that's what I meant too. You are entitled to your own opinion, and me too. Just you be yourself, I be myself, and leave the decision to the staff of Soup, that's enough.
Have a nice day. -
Inappropriate?I'd like to post a follow up on my original question / remark. My posts still don't make it to the front page, while at this very moment all I see on that front page is nudity. I can see why you'd want to keep the front page 'clean', but I don't understand how my content isn't allowed while at the same time users posting similar content do make it to the front page. That seems rather arbitrary to me.
With the option of blocking users, I don't think I should be banned automatically any more. If people are offended by what I post, they could just block me, no?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?What is the current stance on certain users' posts not appearing on the front page?
I’m curious
