We don't have a final answer on this one... here are some thoughts:
The problem is that a really efficient tagging interface takes up a lot of space, like the one at del.icio.us for new bookmarks: you want your recent/frequently used tags listed so that you don't use different tags for the same meaning, there needs to be an explanation how to enter multi-word tags, etc.: It gets quite large and complex.
I'm also not sure that tagging isn't too much mental overhead for a quick tumblelog post.
One might be able to do something compact and simple with lots of JavaScript trickery (single input box, good auto-completion, accepting any input format, suggesting tags through tagthe.net or a similar service)... it'd be worth a try.
Of course then you'll need a tag list and/or cloud for navigation, too.
Maybe simple categories would work better for a tumbelog: Do you really need to tag tumblelog posts with an infinite number of labels so that you can sort them in many ways and find specific posts again later, or is it enough to be able to seperate your posts on, say, technology from those on your personal life?
Any additional input is appreciated!

Inappropriate?i agree with CC.. i do enough tagging as it is in delicious, etc, and i believe it clashes with the philosophy behind the likes of soup. however, some sort of categorisation, whether by date (an archive) or by type (links, photos, etc.), would be real swell.

Inappropriate?Hi, thanks for answering. Tried a post before, but it apparently didn't shows up...
I agree too, this would be too heavy for my soup, didn't see it like this at first time.
I like categories: you should be able to create as many categories as you need, so when it's time to post, you just have to choose an existing box, without thinking again about what tags that content. Well, that's just an idea. Looking forward to see something about that topic in my soup.
Cheers.

Inappropriate?Christopher: My idea would be to simply import the tags from my own RSS-feeds like del.icio.us. If I'd save something to del.icio.us I already tag the link. When imported to Soup the tags could be imported as well.
If this would happen with any different RSS-stream I would get a tag cloud aggregated from all of my services. That would be definitively a killer! ;-)
But: If I'd link something NOT from my private RSS-feeds I would like to manually define a tag for this. e.g. I would like to link to a Youtube video from a different creator than me. When saving it to Soup, I would like to add my own tag...
Got the idea?
Thanks for feedback.
I’m excited

Inappropriate?I'm undecided yet wether to like the soupy character of soup or not... To be able to give at least one tag per article would be nice. Sort of ingredients for the soup: review, unsubstantial... wait, great part of soup would end up in that last category *eg*
Soup is like a game. Maybe it isn't serious enough for tags.

Inappropriate? What you describe sounds a lot like more post types. (Like Text, Image, etc. but more specific: Review, Definition, Origami Project)
I think these are pretty much the essence of tumblelogging, so yeah, definitely coming.

Inappropriate? We've been thinking about this, but there really hasn't been any conclusion on how the interface would look like.
Also, in any case, this takes a lot of time, and we're not quite sure if it is *that* important for Soup.
But yeah, the problem is still on our roadmap, somewhere.
I’m sorry, but we can't implement everything. At least for now.

Inappropriate?Tagging is essential for searching. I want to easly find a picture after one year. Right now i'm just switching to html edit and put tags in <font>. It's an ok workaround for me, but annoyng for reposters with different than white background.</font>

Tags just as are implemented now are fine, but full tag functionality should include some kind of tag list/cloud... That would probably be the last important feature I miss in Soup.io. -
a tag cloud or at least a list of all used tags in a certain soup would be great :) -
Inappropriate? Thanks for tags, now I enjoy my soup much more! List of tags would be super great!!
I’m thankful
