More gender diversity please
The sign up form only allows a choice of two genders, and forces you to choose male or female. For anyone between or outside these genders (transgendered people etc.), this is likely to be offensive. There should be the option of an input box at least. See my blog post on this issue:

I know you can remove your gender settings later on in profile settings, but sign-up shouldn't demand a choice between male or female, and the profile settings should allow an input box for a variety of genders. Check what Pownce do for a good/amusing example.

Inappropriate?Hi Ms. or Mr. Beth,
I think Spock follows a standard that's uniform across the majority of websites. The reality is that all sites only have male or female as options. If you gave me a fill-in choice, I'd put "cheeseburger" as my gender.
I don't even think I've seen a registration process that allows for the option you present. Spock does, however, allow you to tag yourself as a transgender to identify yourself.
Blame society and not Spock! -
Inappropriate? If you read my blog post linked above, I point out that Pownce for example offers a whole drop-down list of options.

Much more post-modern don't you think? The fact that Spock follows a standard that is uniform across a majority of websites doesn't excuse anything. This is a complaint I have had with a number of websites. Some sites are making changes for the better, and helping people to be more aware of gender diversity. I do think that when you are creating a site where the user creates a personal profile, you have a responsibility to be forward-thinking in terms of identity politics.
In addition, I have found that it is not a uniform policy to demand Male/Female gender on sign-up - many sites allow you to leave this blank. Also it is actually very rare for there to be a pre-set default gender set (Spock defaults to Male).
