Alternative advertising methods
Have you considering alternative methods of advertising. I understand that one reason for audio ads is that with purely banner ads it would be easy to minimise the player to avoid seeing the ads. One alternative might be to implement visualisations like you have with normal media players, and to include visual advertising within the visualisations if the player is running maximised as an alternative to the audio ads (or maybe have half the ads "visualisation ads" and half of them audio ads).

Inappropriate?Hi Steve,
So you'd like to see commercial type ads rather than audio ones?
Andres
I’m curious.

Inappropriate?I think we all HATE audio ads because audio ads are the most IRRITATING experiences for a music service, aren't they?
I’m annoyed at audio ads

this is one of the best points

Andreas,
You must also understand that we have to have a business model so while you may be annoyed with the ads they are necessary in order for us to provide the service. -
Inappropriate?Could the positioning of audio ads be varied depending whether you are listening to individual tracks or full albums? Sometimes when listening to a full album it can be jarring to have an advert in the middle. Maybe a full album could have the ads at the end, and if you stop playing before the end these ads could be played before the next track is started?

Inappropriate?I totally understand that in order for Spotify to have a free version, it needs to include ads. But to they need to be so loud?! I've only heard the guy from Snow Patrol, but it's really louder than the music playing. I jump in my chair each time...

Inappropriate?I'd disagree over video adverts as they'd use too much bandwidth as with music steaming that's using ~200kbps already. On slow connections the buffering time could make the advert effectively last a lot longer.
-
Inappropriate? Why not use a system similar to that of IM clients (MSN, Trillian, YIM) in which a small notification box comes up in a corner of the screen?
This method would mean that more people will see the ad - and people who minimise the window would still see it.
There would also be a welcome break from the same audio ads.

Inappropriate?People, if you don't like the audio ads then buy premium!
I'm going to get premuim but I'm waiting for PayPal :)
I’m happy

Inappropriate?given the trouble I just had logging in with my OpenID* and losing the longer comment I'd written in the process, I'll just say that nice ads don't bother me, but obnoxious ones (Kasabian, danceclub, ...) just propel me back to Winamp. One violently intrusive ad is all it takes, and I may not be back for days/weeks.
I expect Spotify to learn how to target ads based on the music in a person's history.
(I'm happy to hear unintrusive ads, given that Premium is too expensive for the amount of time I spend listening to Spotify. Bring it down to £2/mo and I'd be more likely to include it in the mix of audio subscriptions.)
*because the OpenID login used here doesn't recognise Liquid ID, reloads the entire page, etc. Be good to see that fixed.
I’m happy to listen when you're nice to me
