We know its an Ogg Vorbis codec but we haven't received an answer on the bitrate.. so a definite answer from an official would be great.. -

They say: Up to 160kb/s... the quality of some songs is realy crappy and sounds distorted. You have to do something about the quality. The level is another problem. -
sitdown: I haven't noticed any distorted songs, can you give examples?
The volume is quite low, but I think that can prevent audio distortion. It's what I've heard anyway :).. But I agree, it's pretty annoying having to constantly switch audio levels -
