I am SO mad!!! 1/4 of all my tracks GONE!!!
First of all, i am a Premium user.
When the "Some important changes to the Spotify music catalogue" was first announced, it was announced like we would loose a few tracks, not making the big impact to the Spotify music catalogue.
So i thought "what the heck, how bad can it be?"
And today, it was annnounced on the blog, that the cleanup had finally come to an end.
So i logged on to Spotify, expecting to have lost a few tracks on my "master" playlist, a collection of all of my favourite music, spanning over most genres, new as old.
And WOW i was surprised!!! I had maybe lost 1/4 of all my tracks!!!
(I have aproxx. 300 tracks on the playlist, and Spotify tells me that "80 tracks could not be replaced")
This is totally UNACCAPTABLE!!! The announcement made it sound like a "minor" claenup, but so much music is gone!!!
I am posting my playlist here for everyone to see the impact with their own eyes (remember to go to the preferences menu and un-check “Hide Unplayable tracks” and then press the Apply button):
http://open.spotify.com/user/yuskar/p...
I am urging everyone to post examples of ther playlists, so we all can see what a disgrace this is!!!
Please everyone, let's keep this thread burning!!! This is too big to let it go!!
This is the end for me as a Spotify user, sad really, as i have been a very satisifed user, promoting the service to family and friends.. A very sad day indeed..
PS: How come, that it specially seems like the whole electro/trance genre is gone ? This really doesn't make sense..

Inappropriate?"How come, that it specially seems like the whole electro/trance genre is gone ? This really doesn't make sense."
Because that music usually is released on smaller labels that probably haven't got an agreement with Spotify yet. (Just my 2 cents.)
If my estimates are correct approximately 10% of the total songs were lost today. You lost 25% which means you should be disappointed. Others have lost 1%, one guy lost 85%. I guess it all comes down to what music you listen to...
I can understand your frustration, but is really leaving Spotify the right choice?
More and more music will be added during the next months and hopefully some of "your" artists will be included in future updates.
I could understand if you wanted to use Spotify less frequently, but leaving it altogether may be a bit drastic. Take it easy, calm down and see how it feels when you wake up tomorrow.
I’m still happy (strange, huh?)

Inappropriate? Some of is down to restrictions, something that will be sorted out eventually, maybe you should find out what label there on in your country and contract the label
-
Inappropriate?I posted this on the blog earlier, but I'll repost it here to try and get more coverage and maybe?? some answers...
I’d just like to ask if there is anyone here from or connected to the record industry who can try and explain in simple terms the reasoning behind withdrawing content from a service like Spotify and imposing regional restrictions? Every time I think about it my head almost explodes because I cannot think of any benefits whatsoever for the artists, publishers or record companies. Maybe I have a simplified view but it would seem that if you allow access to your material on a service such as Spotify you have a chance of earning money that you would not otherwise have earned. If you remove it you have no chance of earning that money. Maybe as Samuel from Sony alluded to in another thread it is simply the case that contracts have not been updated for a digital world. But if this is true then firstly, why is it taking so long to update artists contracts for the 21st century? and secondly wouldn’t it be in everyone’s interests to allow access right now to legitimate services like Spotify and collect any due fees later retroactively when the contracts have been sorted out? After all the choice is between earning money or not earning money. Why would anyone running a small or large business not choose to earn money? I dont’t understand! Please can someone explain it to me?!!
I’m still not understanding the music industry
-
Inappropriate?I don't feel like getting too involved in this question but I had a large share of my music removed. Some playlists of 50+ songs only like 5 remains. I was one of those who didn't think too much about the annoucement. "What a bunch of whiners", I thought, at the people already whining (I witnessed at that point a song or two removed, nothing big or major in any way). Now I'm joining in with the whiners. Well, I won't whine as much, just cancel my subscription. Spotify was a great idea but honestly, seeing you've lost 100's of your favourite tracks - I might aswell bend over and take the commercials too.
To be honest, Spotify was a service too good to be true. I'd be happy to see it flurish sometime once again, but until then I can't support it.
I don't really blame Spotify. Should I? Shouldn't I? Like I said, I don't feel like getting too involved. There are still other means of getting music you like (although not as convenient).
I’m frustrated, upset
-
Inappropriate?I've been a premium user since the commersial release. Until now. There really isn't any reason anymore to pay for this service when over 50% of my favourite artists have been removed completely. It's sad though, I actually thought Spotify could be the future of digital music and I recommended it to all my friends..
-
Inappropriate? My single playlist is completely empty now, none of my tracks could be replaced.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? If it's down to restrictions that it's gone then it will be back as soon as the label who has the rights to it in your country uploads it and there's no reason why they won't as the artists obviously haven't opted out as other countries have access to their music
-
Inappropriate?Almost all music i have listen on is gone. I have cancelled my premium, there is nothing there for me anymore, just piratebay. :)
-
Inappropriate? What i don't understand is, that all the music to be found in Spotify in the firstplace before the "cleanup", have been from labels where agreements had been settled to a certain level, right ?
If not, the music would have been illegal, which is not the case.
But it seems like, the "aftertouch" of regional restrictions etc. makes these agreements cover only maybe 3/4 of the initial database..
And this is what doesn't make sense to me.
This seems very unlogic. Someone must have forgotten to do their homework, and we, the users are paying the price now..
The sad part is, that if the "gone" muisc haven't been there in the firstplace, it wouldn't hurt so much loosing it.
According to some searches i made before and after the cleanup, around 200.000 tracks have been removed... 200.000...
I’m still mad and disappointed
-
Yes, here in Sweden the number of tracks seems to have diminished by about 150.000. If I do a search for "year:1900-2100" yesterday it was around 2.25 milion tracks and today it's around 2.10 milion track. -
Inappropriate? We should all keep an eye on the number of available tracks. Andres said catagorically in the blog post last week...
"From this point on there are no plans to remove any more music and our catalogue will only grow from here."
We should hold Spotify to this. I know it is not entirely within their control but for us Premium users who are paying for this service that is no consolation and we will vote with our wallets if the situation doesn't improve.
I’m annoyed that 150,000 tracks have disappear and countless others have become unplayable due to regional restrictions
-
Inappropriate?9/10 of my psy trance is gone and all my live sets are gone. Whats the use no way I will ever pay for this shit. Back to the bay for me...
I’m furious
-
Inappropriate? Why don't the labels just upload it, it's not a problem with the bands when it comes to restrictions cause other countries have access
-
You won't get an answer to your question. Besides, there doesn't seem to be any kind of sensible logic behind anything the record labels do.
To everyone except the record labels it seems like the choice is simple, include your artists on Spotify and earn money you would not otherwise have earned. Don't put your artists on Spotify and don't earn that money.
Now, I'm not a business man but even I can see that it's better to earn money than not earn money, so I don't understand what can of twisted logic is behind what the record labels are doing. -
Well, the amount of money depends on the amounts of plays, which migh be very little depending on the artist. At least for small labels i can imagine that puting the music up on Spotify is no way to make a good living. -
The amount of money they make may be small, but some money is better than no money, which is exactly what they will get if some annoyed user pirates a track because it is no longer available on Spotify. -
Wow m8, and i thought my situation was bad... one single song remains on your playlist :( -
I feel with you!
Astral Projection 6 discs - 0 tracks left
Hallucinogen 3 discs - 1 track left
Trance 200+ tracks- 4 tracks left
Live sets 20 something - 0 left
Techno 50 something tracks- 4 tracks left
Psy Trance 300+ tracks - 22 tracks left
not much use now... -
NikolaiH: I found some replacements that you can add manually. Check the other thread. -
In my country none of them is available. and to JB im not sure if your replacements i available in Norway? -
Inappropriate?I also lost about 30% of all my tracks... THIS SUCKS!!!
Seams that the labels/artist want us to download the stuff without paying for it.. And as long as they do this crap, I won’t pay a dime for any music..
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? When the cleanup is done, all my music are gone.. I really hope spotfy starts to refund people now. The got so popular because the had a big catalog (with known artists, not only unknown crap), that is not the case right now...
I’m really sad
-
Inappropriate?I want to know if Spotify has access to the full back catalogues of every label that's signed up with the exceptions of the artists who have opted out and if it's just a case that they haven't recieved all the label's full back catalogues yet
-
Inappropriate? It seems a delibarate choise, that none of the officials reply in this thread, even though it's one of the most active threads in the moment.
I find this very ignorant.
When i joined, the slogan said, and still says "A world of music".
I believe the correct phrasing would be "A 'world' of music with strict country resctrictions".
I’m still mad and disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Hopefully they'll get more labels on-board so these country restrictions are removed.
I looked through the first .xls file with updates and saw that a couple of Tiësto albums had been added. It was a bit disappointing to see that they weren't available in Sweden.
I’m sad
-
Generally it seems like Sweden is very hard hit when it comes to country restrictions.
The Ironic part is, that a lot of these retstricted artists are swedish.. -
Inappropriate? All of the Smiths albums are gone. Dozens of soundtracks and a lot of songs. However, I'm on a free account so I can't really complain. It sucks, but I'll live. I, for one, will not leave Spotify because of this bump on the road.
-
Inappropriate?The way I see it...
Pretend you're an artist, and a record label shows interest in you. They offer you a worldwide deal, even though they're only based in the UK - they're not really going to know how to sell your records in Japan etc and have no contacts out there. However, there's this great Japanese label, who would make you a star in Japan, but nowhere else. What do you do?
Personally, I would sign Japanese rights to the cool Japanese label, and then 'rest of world' to the other label. I suspect other artists have decided similarly and that's what's happening here.
So why was the music there, but has now disappeared? Well, the restrictions were always legally there (and were delivered when the record companies sent over the tracks), but it seems Spotify weren't imposing them. As you can imagine, it can be a bit fiddly for labels to deliver clearances ('this album is Japan only; this one is Europe + South America; this one is world minus North America...'), so it takes time. I've also heard certain labels don't deliver clearance for all countries at the same time, but will rather sent through albums on a 'country' basis ("you can have X, Y, Z for UK...")... so I would hazard a guess that it's fairly possible that some albums will start returning!
-
Inappropriate? We will probably get them all back and if The Smiths are restricted it means we'll probably get them back in the uk
-
Inappropriate? When I puchased my full year I didn't expect a lot of my playlist to disappear a few weeks later. I feel like I want to get my money back.
Some great contracts you have signed there.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I think transparency on which songs have been removed would be useful, maybe even a pending status. Perhaps the effort would be too much but it would be nice to know with more certainty if they're gone for good or on vacation.
I’m a bit frustrated too
-
Inappropriate?3 months have past and still no participation or comments from anyone at Spotify in this thread. No answers, no explanations, no reassuring words that everything will eventually be ok. Nothing.
That's a bit worrying.
I’m still sad that I can't listen to what I want, when I want, where I want, even as a premium subscriber
