Make the purchasing interface optional
I don't want "buy" buttons everywhere cluttering up the lovely, minimalist UI. Why would I need MP3s when I've got Spotify?

Sorry but I'm gonna have to join here - I've tried to get used to the Buy buttons but as a premium subscriber I would like to have the option to disable these. I've no problem if this is enabled by default, just let me and the other premium subscribers who choose to disable it.
A few times now I've accidentally clicked a Buy button and had to wait for the window to populate before I could close it again and continue navigating Spotify (since clicking the buy button freezes all Spotify controls). I found this quite annoying.

Thank you Andres for the response and acknowledgement of the thread.
Unfortunately, I really do not like the new interface and have decided to cancel my premium membership. To me, it feels to close to advertising, which as a premium member, I have paid to get rid of.
Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent idea adding one-click buying into Spotify, but adding "Buy" after each song, and another, larger, "Buy Album", under the Album Art, in my view, is going too far. It's good to try-before-you-buy, and with Spotify you get to try the entire song or album before making your purchase, which is great. However, I think you are forgetting that other download services/sites do not charge £9.99/month for their pre-purchase previews!
One solution would be to allow premium members to customise their columns*. Just like Windows File Explorer, users could right mouse click and through a tickbox menu, could choose which columns to show or hide. This will go some way in addressing the "Buy button spam".
* A common request I believe, why not kill two complaints with one update? :)

Thanks for the reply Andres,
There is many things wrong with this "feature"
1. I don't need it - I got Spotify.
2. It's placed between Track and Artist (sic)
3. The icon is ugly (very non-spotifish)
Storing music locally is so 2008 :)

I can fully understand that Spotify needs to make money and needs to maintain the full support of the record labels, but this new purchase interface really needs to be disabled / made optional for premium members. I think premium members should be able to choose from the new interface as is, if they like it, or revert back to the old right click > Buy track menu.
I have no problems with the new interface for free accounts, after all, they are getting access to the entire music database for free, but premium members pay good money to remove adverts and have access to offline playlists. Why on earth would someone pay for premium to play songs offline, and want to pay again for exactly the same music?? It bears all the hallmarks of a greedy record company trying to muzzle in on the act.
If this new interface stays, then I propose that Spotify change their motto from "Spotify - Everyone loves music", to "Spotify - oh no, just another download service".

You can sort of remove it... (Mac)
Right click app icon, "Show Package Contents".
Go into Contents > Resources and find the file "mainlist-purchase-icon_button.png"...
I replaced mine with one of the same dimensions a transparent png. Downside is if you click in the wrong place you still get the purchase dialog. But my interface is cleaner :)
I bet the hack has to be redone next time the client updates though... oh well.

The whole idea of spotify is not downloading/purchasing songs anymore. Sure some people would want to buy songs, but then it's not a main feature of spotify. And so, there's not interest in having it all the time is the nice UI that made spotify the winner against all other competitors.
Please revert this

Inappropriate?Yes please. You should be able to disable 'Purchases' and the 'Buy' button which is cluttering the very sleek and sexy interface.
You shouldn't force people with stuff like this, always add an option to disable it.
-
Inappropriate?Personally, for premium members, this should maybe have an optional disable, but for free members. This should be left on. For me, this has no change, I use Spotify Premium and Spotify on my iPhone, so I have no need to download the mp3's. My taste in music changes like the weather, I don't want to own music, as in a week or a month, I will most likely not listen to it again.
I mean, Spotify don't make much profit, if any off free members with adverts. So this is an added revenue stream for them for free members, but I don't see many premium members who already pay for Spotify to buy tracks.
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?I agree, make it optional, or at the very minimum move it's placement in the columns. Placing it between the Track and Artists name is terrible idea, it should be at the at the start or end.

Inappropriate?I got spotify premium to get away from ads which constantly naged about purchasing a new album.
The reason I signed up for spotify was to be able to explore the world of great music, and be able to listen to it without becoming a criminal or having to go broke.
Bottom line is: The purchase feature is nice, for those people interested in purchasing music.
For the rest of the people, its molesting the minimalistic and great GUI.

Perhaps using Resource Hacker, http://angusj.com/resourcehacker/ I haven't tried it myself though. Backup the files before you attempt anything. -

Inappropriate?I'm cancelling too. You wouldn't find adverts for Amazon on iTunes. This was a stupid decision fuelled by greed.

Inappropriate? Also Spotify, you should not offer any downloads unless you can guarantee their quality. Offering downloads on a random "256kbps or 320kbps" basis is incompetent business.
Andres, do you want to buy my kettle? It heats water to lukewarm or boiling and you have no choice nor notice which one it is going to be. No? Didn't think so.
I’m frustrated
-
Umm, you do know that 7Digital is providing the downloads? And most retailers (like Amazon) don't even offer 320 for any tracks. But it is odd that they're not all the same, wonder if that has anything to do with what label produces them? -
Inappropriate? Please make it optional - don't screw up a good thing.
-
Inappropriate?I agree with most that it clutter the interface, maybe possible to remove it the settings for all or just premium users?
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?About the free spotify accounts - I use it for some reason. I don't have the money to buy every single song I listen to. Do you think I would buy songs that often that I really need that icon? If so, I could right click it and choose the buy option from the menu, like I do to share songs with a friend (You would better add that feature for sharing rather than buying)
Spotify is the best thing that i've ever seen, but I was always afraid that the time will come, when it will be spoilt with things like this. Please!!! -
Inappropriate? Please make it optional, we pay to get rid of that kind of ads. I cancelled premium.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I am also disturbed by the cluttering of the interface by these icons, but I cannot believe you find it to be reason enough to quit paying the premium price. Come on, Spotify is still the best thing that has happened to music since the internet! You call it greedy by Spotify, but you yourself don't want to pay the price of two beers per month for unlimited listening...
I’m amazed by all wining users
-
The reason I cancelled was that I find the buy buttons more instrusive than the adverts you get in the free account. Therefore I see Spotify Premium as pointless. I can still enjoy the music, plus the two extra beers a month :) ps, where do you drink, that you pay £5 a pint!? -
Premium ́s first argument is "no ads". Obviously, Spotify is getting some money every time a song is purchased from that annoying icon. It ́s advertising. I ́m not paying for an "ad-free but with some ads" service.
Once they remove that "feature" or make it optional, be sure I will be the first to subscribe back to premium. -

I’m ANGRY
-
Inappropriate?Users who complain that Spotify is greedy just don’t get it. Spotify is a business, in other words an organization which purpose is to maximize profits for its owners. Greed is literally the foundational premise upon which businesses are built.
Spotify however doesn’t get it, either. It somehow succeeded in getting the notoriously square-headed music industry to take a huge gamble on legal streaming music, and one would perhaps think it was a company with a grand vision and a long term strategy.
Let’s attempt a rudimentary cost/benefit analysis of choosing to force this feature (buy songs) onto users and force it to always be prominently available in the user interface.
Benefits:
1. Short-term song purchases will increase considerably.
(Anyone who doubts it will, sign up for Marketing 101. It’s obvious. How much it will increase however is a tougher nut, at least for me.)
Costs:
1. In the short term, alienate half the paying user base. (Does anyone know how many percent of Spotify users are premium users?)
2. Ruin the company image. There were people out there who actually believed you were fundamentally different from the other “greedy” companies. You’ve burst their bubble, but many haven’t discovered these discussions yet and you could reduce the damage by immediately giving in and letting users *choose* how they want Spotify to be, at least for features where the community is deeply divided. But time is of the essence.
3. Drastically reduce viral marketing. Viral marketing only works if users are enthusiastic about the product and the company. Even those users who want to buy songs will be alienated by your refusal to allow those who hate the feature disable it.
4. Since Spotify has no technical edge of any kind and it’s only real competitive advantage is the contracts it has with content providers and the company image, once those contracts expire it will be far more vulnerable to competitors. It will then have only image and user base as competitive advantages, and while these advantages are still considerable, it is perhaps not the most intelligent thing to squander untouchability for the sake of selling a few more songs in the short term.
(I am myself a software architect and I believe I am qualified to make the assertions regarding technical edge that I did. Spotify seems well made from my superficial knowledge of the system, but they haven’t solved any new problems and anyone with money could buy everything that’s needed to set up a competing service in a pretty short time. The difficulty for would-be competitors would be to get contracts with the same or better terms than Spotify, and to make enough people hear about it and be bothered to go download it. The first bit will *certainly* fall into place for someone sooner or later. The second bit is very expensive with no certain outcome if users are enthusiastic and love the product, but becomes a lot easier when plenty of Spotify users are pissed off and perhaps even actively looking for alternatives.)
Finally, I’m a basic user and I will not buy premium unless I perceive Spotify to be a company that listens to it’s users and creates a product that can be customized to at last some degree to fit my personal preferences. I’m a tinkerer type of user who likes to have things my way. It seems there are some others like me out there too. I mention this simply to show that at least some basic users are actually trying to find out what premium is like *before* buying, so Spotify is alienating potential upgraders as well as existing premium users.
Written in the hope that top management, board members and shareholders have the sanity to keep an eye on what’s happening in the user community. It’s the only true asset Spotify has to protect it in the long run, if this giant experiment succeeds at all.

Inappropriate?Just an additional note: Perhaps some companies will eventually understand that online barriers to entry are far too low to permit bullying users. I am reminded of the thunderf00t video "YouTube vs the users" which youtube tried to take down, causing a flurry of mirroring and reuploading from others who were outraged at youtube's demonstration of their willingness and even intent to censor and control, rather than merely try to enforce law.
Anyone who cares about the promise of this brave new internet world (the overwhelming democratization the internet can bring, just like enhanced ability to communicate has been the foundation of earlier democratization going back to the invention of the print press), and I for one cannot think of a more important issue, should reflect upon this and take a stand and make a fuss whenever corporations try to override the user community. Given that Google is the owner of YouTube, it's quite worrying that YouTube still has not really relented (to the best of my knowledge) or made any promises *not* to censor, but rather reserve the right to do as they bloody please and probably do so all the time without our knowledge against users less able than thuderf00t to defend themselves. -
Inappropriate? Its great that we can purchase in Spotify, but for some, they may never want to do that. I agree that the 'purchase' button clutters the nice clean interface. Good idea.
