Native Linux-Support would be great!
I'd love to see a native linux-version of spotify. Yes it works fine with wine, but in the year 2008 a native version for the cool-people among us 'd be great. :)

A streaming service like Spotify is the perfect match for the ever-more-popular "netbooks", which typically run Linux and have too little storage for a local music library.

A Windows app with wine works, but it always feels like there are some things missing. It's always better with a native application. It's more streamlined with the OS and gives the application more "life". Someone mentioned D-bus support, that would be a great feature! And the sound would be much easier for the newbie to fix. There would be nothing to fix ;) Also wine adds an extra layer of complexity, even though the developers of wine has done a great job integrating it into the Desktop Environment. Using Spotify and getting access to it should be easy. I think thats one major thing with a service like Spotify.

Both 32 bit and 64 bit.
Ubuntu deb would be perfect :)

A native 64-bit version :)

And let it communicate with D-bus so we can make cool apps for spotify.

Inappropriate?jackflap: I had some troubles with Spotify and Karmic too. After installing Wine with native pulseaudio support from this guys PPA, it worked like a charm:
https://launchpad.net/~neil-aldur/+ar...
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?hey, that worked like an absolute charm. spotify now seems to be running flawlessly..
thanks!
and not a moment too soon.. i was actually just on the verge of signing up to the napster trial :)

Inappropriate? It works under wine but that is exactly it. It requires wine and looks and feels different to the nativ aps. Furthermore intigration of spotify with media players like rhythmbox would be great
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?there are also drawing issues. it maximizes over panels, or randomly restores from maximized position and then the maximize button doesnt work any more.
or the album art is pixelated, there are also little graphical glitches around the search box and scrollbars. -
Inappropriate? As a dedicated Linux user (mainly Ubuntu) I too would love to see a linux client. Under Wine it fails quite often (no sound, wrong bitrate, stuttering etc). It would be the push that tips me over the edge from "Freegan" to Premium Subscriber - but I would want to try on free first.
I’m excited but frustrated

You have tried the Winepulse version of Wine haven't you? http://www.3spoken.co.uk/2009/08/maki... -

Inappropriate?Another issue with no native linux client is that firefox doesn't launch spotify when u click on a spotify http link.
Even if spotify got the codeweavers guys to create a native CrossOver Spotify package bundled with winelib and pulseaudio support, that would be far better than the current situation. Something like they did with the early Chrome release:

You can get Spotify links to work in Linux (with Firefox). I wrote a small tutorial, see here: http://jordanhall.co.uk/ubuntu-linux/... -

Inappropriate?I would buy a premium account if there was a native Linux app. I know of several others who would too. Perhaps others would commit to that and we could sway the Spotify team? In fact I would write the app for them if they would let me!
I’m excited

That has actually been possible for quite some time. Maybe you should have a look at this: http://developer.spotify.com/en/libsp... -

Not really, Spotify has very strict rules making it almost impossible to release a player under open source:
"You must have a valid Application Key issued by Spotify in order to access the API and develop an Application. You may only access the API with the Application Key issued to you by Spotify. The Application Key must be embedded in your Application, including in all updates and revisions thereto, in a secure manner not accessible by third parties. You agree not to share, transfer or otherwise disclose your Application Key to any other party (it being understood that a group of developers working for the same entity may share the key for purposes of jointly working on the Application) or use it for any other purpose except in connection with the Application you identified when you applied for it. You are responsible for any activities engaged in using your Application Key, whether or not engaged in by you or a third party. You agree to notify Spotify immediately of any actual or suspected unauthorized use of any Application Key issued to you and to cooperate reasonably with Spotify in the investigation of the same." -

Here's my open source player - http://xtestify.sourceforge.net - the only bit of "source" I can't release is the text version of my app key. My app key gets compiled into the binary version that I also host there. If you want to compile your own binary rather than using the one I provide, just ask Spotify for your own app key - they don't charge you for it. -

Nice work! Will you eventually add pulseaudio support? -
Nice work! Will you eventually add pulseaudio support? -
it uses ALSA to do the audio output, so I guess you can just configure your "default" ALSA device to go via Pulse Audio... -
Inappropriate?Yes, I think most developers would not go along with these rules. I looked at it and no, I would not want to sign anything like that. But maybe that's the idea.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? The xtestify site needs screenshots, I need to see it before I invest in a premium account to use it.

There is an old screen shot on the wikipedia page that Jonas Östman created - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testify_...
I've also added some screen shots to the main web page now
