no internet connection with Spotify on OSX

Since installing Spotify on our mac yesterday morning we have been having problems with our broadband connection. Initially it ran very slowly and when we restarted we can't connect at all - error message is 'could not negotiate a connection with the remote PPP server'. Also getting an error when trying to check the network settings - message saying that another application has changed the settings.
Anybody else had similar problems?
