Offline Spotify
It would have been great if it could be turned on "Offline mode". So the music that we listen to most, could be listen to, even in offline mode.

I would apparise a possibility, mostly for premium users, to save song streams on the harddisk for offline playing for a limited time. After the time has expired, the user must connect to internet and "reverify" the spotify integration, after it he can do the circuit again.
This would be a very good feature, especially for mobile users, who won't need to deal with high traffic cost.
Compare this possible as you could store the webpages for local viewing a time, when you used telephone modems.

Really like this idea. It would probably have to be a premium feature but would be one which would convince me to make the jump... currently I still have to buy my music because i can't access spotify on the go and so don't really see the benefit of premium for my lifestyle. This feature would change that!
Great service guys!

But this means the ads would have to be saved offline too, which makes them removable with a bit of knowledge.
EDIT: Oh, of course, make it a premium only feature :)
I’m unsure if it's a good idea...

And a such feature would be killing the whole services - any watchhole that enables the users to catch the music offline would kill the commersial music industry intresting of participing in the service.

Andres, you rock! -
Inappropriate?Didn't you guys recently remove just such a feature? ;).
-
Um, did they? I am not aware of such a function ever existing in Spotify. As far as I know, it has always been a solely streaming service. -
It was demonstrated in a Youtube video. It's supposed to be one of the functions in the iPhone client. I have no idea if this will be added to Android. -
It is in the Android version as well. -
Inappropriate?that would be great to be able to play the cached files considering they already on the computer.
I’m happy

Well It will play the whole song if you have it cached and you disconnect from the Internet, so I'm guessing it checks with the spotify server or something before starting to play... so all they need to do is remove these checks for cached songs when its offline. -
Inappropriate?I just googled this very topic. Just wondered if it was possible to play cached files. Signed up just to post . This would be a fantastic addition to what is a great product

Well, if the ads are also played offline, the business model should still be valid I guess. -
There would be no way of spotify monitoring the add listens/views though so wouldn't get revenue from it! -
The point in this is to be able to play music even when the user don't have Internet access. Of course you would play online if you had the opportunity, how would you else be able to add music or update your cache? If the cache is limited, they could force people to get online now and then. The most users would probably always stay online though, just as they do now. -
I agree, how much would they let users cache anyway? To make it viable they'd have to maybe limit it to an hour, but who's so desperate for music that they can't go for an hour offline without it? -
There has to come a point where you draw the line between what features you miss out on and bandwidth you can save, to what people can rip from spotify.
The most intelligent of people out there already know how to rip songs from spotify. Its a very easy process, But your saying you cannot have offline content because of fears that people will rip the music from spotify.. well thats a poor answer if you ask me. the bottom line of having Offline content will be to decrease bandwidth on spotify servers (Very dramatically)... therfore giving people a better experience as they do not have to keep downloading the same track over and over again. we live in a day and age where nothing is safe... and even players like the iplayer from BBC or youttube content can be ripped. but still they offer offline content as they know this saves server/bandwidth time.
For the spotify team to say this would put an end to streaming controlled advertisement music is poor.
if its possible to cache and play offline music files, its also possible to play offline cached adverts..... but always remember that its not about somebody playing music continually offline, its about saving bandwidth and server time... so that person would probably still be online while playing there offline/cached music tracks.
If advertising is the problem, make cached music files only available for 1 week, therefore you must be online to recieve new adverts. once new adverts are downloaded, they can be placed inbetween the cached tracks again... thus making the offline/cached music files available for another week.
the actual cache of the music files can be encrypted so that only spotify can decrypt them to play them... thus making it harder for people to rip... but again.. always bear in mind that people can rip songs from spotify now... so what are you losing???
Look forward to any responses!! -
There are already services that has the possibility to synchronize playlists to mp3 players in USA. They are premium services and the songs are only playable for a month after you last synchronized.
Personaly I would be prepared to pay maybe 50% more than Spotify premium for such a service and hopefully the music industry understands that that kind of service is what the consumers want, they want content not round plastic disks. -
Inappropriate?CezzBB - if the client recorded what was listened to, it could send it back to spotify once it reconnected to the internet, so spotify could still keep track of how many times the advert was listened too, but just not as accurate if it was recorded real time.
I’m confident
-
Exactly! And if the client doesn't reconnect for (say) 7 days, then it will no longer work until it does (so ensuring ad-data DOES get uploaded) -
Inappropriate?this would negate the need to pick a really long track whenever i need to take a vpn connection to some server at work
-
Couldn't you run the vpn client in a guest OS with something like vmware?
This would leave you connexion of the main (host) OS unchanged for Spotify, wouldn't it? -
probably so if the comp wasn't a piece of crap that slows down to a crawl with a virtual machine running -
Inappropriate? But this means the ads would have to be saved offline too, which makes them removable with a bit of knowledge.

or you just save the whole cache in a single encoded binary file instead of separate files for each track... -

I like this idea. Makes Premium membership even more worth getting. -
The ad caching simply isnt "doable" in this kind of situation.
Premium would be the only way to do it. You can already roam with a Premium account, its just a question of enabling cache playing, with some kind of authentication algorithm offline. -
Inappropriate?I seriously hope you are considering this for the iPhone app. I'll happily pay premium x2 for the ability to store 50 or so songs on the phone before leaving a wifi network. If I am to be charged each time I play a song, I'll just stick with iTunes store. Phone bandwith costs alot, here in norway it's like 1 euro with each mb. Does that mean I have to pay 3 euros every time I hear a song via 3G on my iPhone? That's just not gonna fly. I'll only use the phone app when I'm on the move, when I'm stationairy I have a laptop with spotify and wifi 95% of the time, so I don't need iphone spotify for wifi at all. I'm guessing alot of people are in this position.
I really hope you realize this, I want this app to be amazing and to change the industry.
I’m worried.
-
Greetings, i currently live in Norway. From my view if you wish to use music, then you have to pay severely much for it. Purchase a mobilt bredbånds subscription for 500 NOK and you'll be getting free internet with a 5GB data cap each month and all the music you wish to listen to. Unfortunatly data plans are expensive in Norway. -
Inappropriate?I would like a function like this, where you could hash the login data locally to be able to play all the cached content, and a request to logon instead of directly downloading additional content.
So that when I travel and don't have internet, I can still use spotify on my laptop a couple of days without being synced online.
Maybe a sync timelimit of 7-14 days? That would be good..

Inappropriate?I too would like this. I travel by train at least once every month for totally 5 hour, and mobile broadband isn't available everywhere.
You could do something like steam does. You have to logon at least once every x days/hours so update all crypto keys and all that. The application can then send all music listening statistics so that you know which songs people listens to. (Perhaps only for premium users too, to solve the commercial problem?)
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?I understand that many people are concerned that this would open up the hackers of music to be able to rip the music.. but feel as if many people are missing the point. People listen to the same track many times.. and having offline cache content stops large bandwidth usage on spotify servers. this will allow many other people to have a problem free stream for listening to tracks for the first time.
I have noticed recently that delays are getting bigger when starting new tracks... and with the up coming microsoft music service coming out soon i feel spotify will need to offer a better stable service in order to keeps its customer base.
I’m thankful

Spotify already caches content. It's just a matter of surpassing the login and geolocation parts. Because premium users can roam freely, only a local authentication is needed.
About the delays, yes. Even the quality seems a bit worse. I suspect they are measuring the connection speed. -
Inappropriate?Well, the new iPhone Spotify-client (which requires premium account) have offline functionality - so it seems like there is a solution already in place.
But when do we get to see it in other clients?
I’m looking forward to this in the normal client
-
Inappropriate?Yes please.
-
Inappropriate?I think we are getting confused in this post... rather then having cached music files, I think we are all asking for spotify to be able to pay the songs in your lists without internet connection. (For laptops etc)...
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Yes we are asking for that but others are saying as they're cached anyway it would be nice if we could listen to those without a web connection.
-
Inappropriate? Please do this ASAP lol. It would be awesome. It would encourage me to get premium because then I wouldn't have to use as much download wise
-
Inappropriate?Offline mode would be such a great idea. And it would mean a use for that strange "Offline" graphic which some Mac users of v0.3.19 have been seeing recently :)
1 person thinks

Inappropriate?I'm removing my interest in this, spotify is already noticeably slowing and if offline mode is enabled then the P2P steaming side of it will only be weakened; further slowing down the service.

Really good point. I agree. -
Inappropriate? This really would be a fantastic addition. i'm assuming that it is legally possible as you can do this very same thing in the mobile apps. As someone who frequently finds myself without an internet connection on my laptop I would welcome this. Spotify was my default music player and had well and truly beaten out iTunes and any other players I had used until I was forced to take my computer offline, as I have no internet connection at my current residence and can't use it at work (would get slap on wrist for bandwidth usage).
I’m counting the days till this is possible

Inappropriate? This is great, but is there a 'force offline mode' option like in the mobile client?
There are situations where I'd like to use the net while spotify runs, but can't let spotify access the network - like using my laptop at work!
I’m hopeful
