Portable spotify?
I love spotify, but it'd be nice to be able to have it on the go. It'd be great if Spotify could be ran from a USB drive -- the cache could be kept in a folder in the exe's directory on the drive and the settings saved into a file with it too. I'm not sure what other external files spotify uses, but they'd need to be put alongside it too.
Any hope?

Well, I think that there's always been an official portable version of Spotify. Since I started to use Spotify with Linux (Ubuntu) I've also used the version that doesn't need any installation at all. Look at http://www.spotify.com/en/help/faq/wine/ and scroll down to "Troubleshooting". Then download the spotify.exe file and just run it from wherever you want! :D

Inappropriate?I was wondering the same thing; I carry my daily programs like e-mailapp, browser, office suite around on an USB-stick (check portableapps.com). It'd be great to have Spotify there as well!

Inappropriate?it would be nice if you could put your favorite song on a portable device like ipod or something. maybe like a stream to iphone! :D
i use simplify media now to stream my music library to other computers and iphone. but it would been cooler with spotify :D

Inappropriate?Would be great to be able to use Spotify on school, at work and at parties:)
Ability to use it at parties could be a good source of WOM;)
I’m loving my Spotify

Inappropriate?Hey guys - I did a pre and post systemscan when installing Spotify. Seems there's no needed registry settings or system files that are required. Running Spotify.exe from your USB stick works like a charm, I just tested it. Crazy! =D
I’m even more in love with Spotfiy

does it work on other computers where spotify isn't installed? -
No -- Spotify's settings are stored in a file along with its Cache, which is left on the computer when you are done running. So it is not truly portable unless this entire directory can flawlessly be placed onto a thumb drive. -
Well, you're wrong since, as mentioned above, it can be done all ready. What isn't portable yet is the settings file. -
Inappropriate?Currently Spotify stores a cache storage in your Local Settings. This way it won't have to download the same song twice from their servers. It should be possible to modify the program so it could work as a portable, but I wouldn't recommend it.
-
Well, if you set your Spotify to only use 1GB or maximum 10% of a very small partition then you have to download music a whole lot of times so this is not an issue. It is possible to run from a USB thumb already, but it will always create two folders on the harddrive. But the Temp folder can be put on a memory stick. -
I think I understand your point, but what's different from making a portable version to being able to install on multiple computers (which they let you do) in terms of downloading songs from their servers? I'd probably only use a portable version on the 2 pc's I use the full install on at the moment but it'd be cool to have if I'm elsewhere on occasion.
I hope that makes sense. -
@stoot: the difference comes in with computers you're not allowed to install anything on (library, internet café etc.) -
mr.qs. My response was directed at patrick's post. Installing on several machines and caching on each would put the same strain on Spotify's servers as running it off of a USB drive. Or at least I don't see the difference. -
Inappropriate?Use THINSTALL (currently THINAPP) from VMware
download thinstall from anywhere, install it, and run it on a "clean machine" and by that I mean one that havent had SPOTIFY installed before, or one that has been cleaned properly (spotify uninstalled, and preference/cache folders deleted) then simply make a BEFOREimage, install spotify, logon, close spotify, and make a AFTERimage... Then BUILD the standalone EXE of thinstall... Works like a charm! And if you have a folder NEXT TO the Standalone.Exe called thinstall, then you can point the CACHE files into that thinstall folder.... (inside preferences of spotify, just write THINSTALL where ever it says something else right now, and that will make the thinstall folder its default fodler for cache.. just write THINSTALL and nothing more... do not write C:\thinstall or D:\thinstall... just THINSTALL instead of the C:\docs-sets\user\appdata\ that is the default... And BUILD the standalone exe... See videos on youtube on how to thinstall any application... I might make a guide on this some day... but for now, please try with that info I provided above.... http://alexdata.com/LINKED/SpotifyThi...

On windows when locked down, follow the link http://www.spotify.com/en/help/faq/wine/ scroll to troubleshooting, download the file to computer or even a USB stick and you can run it from there no problem... no install. -
That's not portable though, it still creates folders in Application Data and leaves them there. -
Inappropriate? Can't you just add the executable file, then change, in Prefereces, where the cache should save? This would make it portable, since there is no content saved to the computer, right?
I’m confused
-
No, because the cache path might be an absolute one (meaning if you plug in a thumb drive somewhere else and the drive letter changes, it won't load). Spotify also makes some application data files that you can't change the path of. -
Inappropriate?it's a great idea spotify portable should be better. You can do a bat file that copy the cache and the settings to the USB when you close spotify and copy they again to application data folder when you open it in another computer.....
Sorry my english isn't god enough XD

Inappropriate?I wonder myself a few things still:
Does the company approve of this? I think this would be approved as it'd make it so much easier to not have to install, especially for people with little hard drive space like myself.
Secondly,
To the people who actually HAVE made the application portable, is there a download link available? Preferably not a torrent, please. I really want to try this out. ;)
Thirdly,
Wouldn't the cache occupy a lot of disk space? I mean, If ALL memory created/deleted is packaged into a single .EXE, wouldn't it just bloat over if you listened to a few hours of music?
I'm not so IT-smart on how Thinstall/Thinapp and Wine and all of those other programs actually work, but wouldn't the third question I have be quite a flaw for low-capacity memory sticks? Unless, you'd take the "Use "x" amount of disk space" option, it'd be sort of difficult. -
Inappropriate?Okey...
To everyone...
I've thinstalled the SPOTIFY.EXE (version as of 26.may.2009)
That means, if you go ahead and download it from my page
put an empty folder next to the "SpotifyTHIN.exe" called THINSTALL
then you can run spotify from ANY usb or drive...
This is because all thinstalled applications looks for a folder named THINSTALL in the folder you run the Thinstalled app from... and if it find that it uses the informaion inside that folder... Thus, the cache will automatically go here, as the thinstalled application pretends to be a full system and believes the THINSTALL folder to be the ROOT (C:)...
So, all you have to do is to download the "SpotifyTHIN.exe"
and make a folder called THINSTALL next to it...
Then start the "SpotifyTHIN.exe" and log in using your own user/pass
and if you move the "SpotifyTHIN.exe" then also remember to move the THINSTALL folder next to it...
PS: If you delete the THINSTALL folder, then all your settings and your cache will be gone... Only your online playlists will be there when you log back in... So... if you mess up some settings... Just simply delete the THINSTALL folder and make a NEW empty one... named THINSTALL...
PS: DO NOT MOVE THE CACHE FOLDER!! LEAVE THAT SETTING AS DEFAULT... or else the THINSTALLED program wont be fully portable!!!
Download link: (might be removed at any time)
http://www.alexdata.com/spotify-thin/...
http://www.alexdata.com/spotify-thin/...
(msi best if you want to "install" the program on you PC, not on USB)
(msi gives you a shortcut, and uninstall option in controlpanel)
ENJOY.... !!!
I’m confident

A few questions after downloading and trying this:
1. Can I make the "THINSTALL" folder hidden?
2. Can I rename the .exe?
3. Will this version update if necesary to the latest version, or does it remain as an older build?
Thanks in advance,

Inappropriate?Isn't there anyone that can make a Portableapp for Portable Spotify? I looked at the official webiste and found nothing, so maybe someone here can make something to the likes of my question. It'd be better for people who use Portableapps USB Drives, as long as it's allowed by the EULA.
-
If you have U3, try Package factory. -
If you have U3, try Package factory. -
Xcept that U3 totally sux. Portable Apps is way better. -
Inappropriate?Just downoad the exe and you are all set..... http://www.spotify.com/download/spoti...
no need for anything else ...it works like a charm -
Inappropriate? In theory there is no reason why Spotify couldn't be made truly portable "as designed". The gotchas that stop it so being at the moment are the cache files held in the C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Spotify\Storage\ folder and the user files held in the C::\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Spotify\ folder.
The Preferences of Spotify enable you to locate the cache files wherever you like but there is no option to specify the location of the user files. Windows enables you to identify the location with the current application path by using the .\ locator rather than the driveletter:\ locator. If Spotify was enhanced to accept these parameters then it could be made truly portable asis.
What we need is to lobby for the Spotify developers to provide these enhancements so that we aren't forced to use "Set up Environment before" and "Clean up Environment after" cludges.

Inappropriate?I just used package factory for u3 and it worked fine. Failing that, just get the .exe file directly from the link aimdeey gave.
I’m happy
-
Kate, I'm not using U3 any more, I'm using PortableApps instead. Also, as denton29 said, the .exe isn't portable. It leaves files behind on the host machine after it terminates. It's effectively what I'm already running under PortableApps. -
Inappropriate?I still think that the only option is to get the Spotify developers to enhance the Spotify agent to enable the User files to be relocated to somewhere chosen by the user, just like you can with the Cache files, I have emailed Spotify with that suggestion. If we all do the same we may get a result. Email - support@spotify.com
I’m hopeful
-
Or, we could just keep on postin' here at Get Satisfaction as this is where the Spotify developers want their feedback. -
Inappropriate?Looks like posting here doesn't have much influence with the Spotify developers. I've just downloaded and installed the latest version of the Spotify agent and there is still no sign of anything having been done to enable user relocation of the User files, the one thing that has to be done to make Spotify portable.
I’m frustrated
