I've never felt the slightest urge to rate my WMP library, but because of the sheer baffling amount of music spotify makes available, I really want to keep some record of what Iliked most/least/a bit of what I've listened to. I don't know if I want ratings to be global though, perhaps just for my own memory...

Would be a good idea though i think haters would ruin it by rating genres they hate bad whothout listening... like if I hated emo music I look up some and just hand out 0s etc

For this reason, there should IMHO be no way to "dislike" a music, i.e. no 1-5 scale where you can keep tossing out 1's, but rather just something like an "I like!" button. The problem here would then rather be that unpopular music will have less "likes", so the numer of "likes" would perhaps need to be weighed against the total track playtime. So one with few likes and low playtime would have that statistic boosted and vice versa; one with quite few likes and high playtime would be worse off in its final ranking than something with as few likes but a lower playtime. -
agree with everything jugalator said :) -
I don't agree.
I prefer Spotify hides the ratings and uses them only to calculate recommendations, which should be personalized. So one thing you see is play count (which is already there), and another is "recommendedness for you".
E.g. if you hate emo and rate it down, it might still be recommended to somebody else that loves emo, based on other emo people's stats, but he won't see your rating.
By the way I think a love/hate button would work best. -
Inappropriate?I think that is why it might work. If you like EMO and Synth music you would get recommendations appropriately. But first and foremost I think we need to get ratings for our own sake, so we can rate music we like like we do in Itunes. Then you can play random favorite music without creating playlists for all of it.

Inappropriate?Yeah, it doesnt have to be very advanced. Just a "love" button like last.has.

Inappropriate? How does it work now? Not very good as it looks..
Soundtrack of Our Lives has 4 of 5 of their top hits from their latest album..?
Not a single song from "Behind the Music" and only "Instant repeater 99" from "Welcome to the Infant Freebase".
What's going on here? -
Inappropriate?I like it more like it is now, that the most played songs get higher rating. Unfortunately this results in that the most advertised songs get higher ratings, as people tend to listen to the crap that the radio stations get payed to air... but as long as you don't listen to that kind of music that's "hip", it works fine :)

The rating doesn't have to affect the "popularity"-bar, but would be useful to recommend songs to the actual user. -
"but as long as you don't listen to that kind of music that's "hip", it works fine :)"
but thats a problem.
offer opportunity to list via most played or most rated -

Inappropriate?Yeah just simple star ratings like in iTunes would be great

Inappropriate?I don't really care so much about other peoples ratings, but I would like to rate music for MY OWN sake, so I more easily could sort out MY favorites. And also, which is stated by Jesper, it would probably turn out better recommendations.

Inappropriate?Good idea. Id like to see the avarage score. Should be separated from the popularity though.
-
Inappropriate? If you take a look on AlbumPlayer (www.albumplayer.com), which I used before I got Spotify, it gives you the ability to rate the songs - and then calculate a score of the album the song it is on. This way, it's a possibility to *ignore* all those tracks less than 4 stars f.ex.
I personally think it would be best if it was kept personal, because of the different music tastes. BUT, we could get *recommendations* from people who has rated similar to us. -
Inappropriate?Like the Idea just would like they ad that they analyze your taste to
So you need a database that can analyze your taste
having in Spotify rating buttons from 0 to 10 (hate-love)
And then have the database sort out what kind of music you like and also compare it whit other people that have similar taste.
Something similar to what Amazon got, "people how liked this book also liked this one", it got a lot of books on the bestseller list that otherwise no one would have noticed.
It would also filter out a lot of music i don't like. (for example Jazz go's from nice easy listening to some real "out there" crap)
Think this would make the Spotify experience a howl lot greater, because some people (like me) don't wane sit all night picking songs we like, but just wane enjoy them.
