Slow Stream - Cuts During Playing the Tracks for Buffering
Hey,
I hope I'm not the only one having this problem today... Starting from this morning, around 9 (GMT) until now, streaming got really really slow, I can't listen to a whole song without waiting for a good 30 seconds to load the data.
I don't have the greatest internet connection but I know it's not used by any other application and all my connection is available Spotify to stream music; it's been quite good for the last 2 days but today it's impossible to listen to anything that isn't stored in my cache.
I'm a free user for now, thinking of getting the premium once the service gets out of beta.
What do I do now?

Inappropriate? It sounds like an internet speed problem. What type of internet connection do you have, does the connection work at other times or is it always slow now? You could try testing your speed to see if it's really slow.

Inappropriate?I have the same issue. Began using Spotify 3 weeks ago, no problem, then this last week tracks take an age to start playing then only do so for a fraction of time before cutting out - streaming just not working. Not a connection problem cos everything else on the net works fine.

Inappropriate?Same here. Fine for 2 or 3 weeks. Brilliant in fact, but now it has turned to crap. Please don't say 'internet connection' mine is fine and nothing has changed in between.

Hi Jonathan,
Can you try using Spotify at a different time of the day? Also, do you get any sort of connection message in Spotify itself when this occurs? -
It does seem better in the mornings. But it used to be fine in the evenings too, now it is unusable after say 5pm. Is this ISP throttling (which they deny they are doing) or just a capacity problem at your end? Is it worth me emailing my ISP (Virgin Media btw) ? -
It could be ISP thorttling or could also be something on our side, I don't deny that that is possible, we just haven't had widespread complaints. The clearest indication that it's throttling is if it reoccurs at the same time over many days. Virgin is known to limit bandwidth of some users but not always. -
I think it's gettin fairly widespread Andres, people I talk to are experiencing the same thing, and there is, among others, a busier thread here: http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/to... -
Definitely better during the morning/day time. I have just listened to a full album with no problems, and I did the same yesterday at the same time. Last night, it was unusable. So it does look like ISP related throtteling. What a shame, they will ruin Spotify and others like it for those affected. I am going to write to Virgin and in the mean time, use Spotify in the day time only :( -
Thanks for the info and please do email your ISP. At the same time we need to look into ways to improve this for users as well. -
I have the same problem - evening listening is impossible - yet other times of day are fine. Yet I have a very old product with my ISP (Eclipse UK) which I've specifically held onto (despite them trying to tempt me away onto their new services which ARE bandwidth shaped).
I see no P2P throttling using other apps at thes same time of day, just a very stop-start Spotify App. This strongly suggests to me that the problem is closer to the Spotify server network. If true this would be a much bigger issue for premium service customers (not that "ISP fair use policy" is much less of an issue for Spotify customers) -
Virgin confirm that no P2P throttling occurs, and this looks true, as Radian says above, with other P2P apps I have. So I am coming around to thinking it is more likely a capacity/traffic problem at Spotify's servers as they get hit in the evenings. -
I'll ask our sys admins if we've been having issues and if they can look into it.
However it does appear that Virgin are known for playing with traffic, although it's impossible to say how accurate this may be:

Inappropriate?Hi. I signed up for the premium service yesterday after 3-4 months of the free service. For the first time ever today, I can't play any tracks at all as the buffering is so slow. Even getting any pages to load seems like an eternity. I have done a bandwidth test which was fine, no problems there so hoping it is just a temporary blip.

Inappropriate?I have a premium account and a 10Mb adsl connection and yesterday 4th of july and today 5th july cuts every 20-30 seconds. From Barcelona (Spain.

Inappropriate?I get the same problem too. Sometimes works great, other times works terribly slow. Got so bad I cancelled my premium membership. I know it's not a problem with my computer or or internet as other sites work fine, and I reinstalled Windows a week ago. Was doing this before and after reinstall. It's ridiculous too that the search goes so slow too at times. Hopefully you'll get better speed soon from your servers :)

If it was a problem on their end I guess there would be some more reports other than yours, don't you think? You say other sites work fine, but what other p2p streaming music sites do you use?
I understand that you have a problem with Spotify, but I just don't like when users assume it's the same for everyone else.
/Grumpy JB -
Inappropriate?JB I "assume" it's a problem on their end, as while searching through this site there are a lot of other users complaining of the same problem.
Other P2P streaming sites go about 800kb's for me, so there shouldn't be a problem downloading a small MP3 file (i presume mp3 anyway but besides the point)
I’m anxious
