Next week we are going to be making some changes to our music catalogue that we feel are important to communicate clearly. Unfortunately we are going to be removing a number of songs from our catalogue and adding country restrictions to some tracks, which may make them unplayable for you.
Why are we doing this?
The changes are being made so that we implement all the proper restrictions that are required by our label deals. Some tracks will be restricted from play in certain countries, this means that if you share tracks with friends who are in other countries it’s possible that they won’t be able to listen to them. The reason for this is that our agreements contain strict rules as to what tracks can and can’t be played in various countries that we are now capable of implementing. These restrictions are a legacy from when most music was sold on tapes and CDs and they have continued over into streaming music, our hope is that one day restrictions like this will disappear for good.
Additionally, some of the music that has been delivered to us had been delivered by mistake even though the artist did not want their music to be included in a streaming service. In order to respect the decisions of the artist we now have to remove those tracks. We have not lost any licenses and no labels have stopped working with us, this is just a matter of updating our catalogue to be in line with the agreements we actually have. In hindsight it would have been better to remove this in October when we launched publicly, we realize this now and apologize to you for not doing it sooner.
How will this affect you?
A number of the tracks that you’ve listened to previously will no longer be available for streaming, these tracks have already been removed from the search function. If you have some of these songs in playlists we will try to automatically replace those songs with versions from albums that we are not removing so you don’t lose the song. If there is no replacement available then the song will appear in red on your playlists.
What’s next?
From this point on there are no plans to remove any more music and our catalogue will only grow from here. We already have music from all the major labels and a vast majority of the independent labels licensed, between them we have millions of tracks that we still can add into Spotify. Now it’s a matter of importing that music into our system, which we are doing on an ongoing basis in an effort to add thousands of albums a week. We continue to work hard to sign deals with more labels and will work with the labels we have signed to fill the holes in our catalogue.
Our dream is to create a music experience where users can play whatever music they want, whenever they want, it may take awhile but we will keep working at it. Please feel free to leave any questions you may have on the blog or join the conversation on our forum if you require more information.

Thanks for the information. But I still wish artists like Tool would be on Spotify again.
If there is anything at all the community of Spotify users can do to help you get these bands back on Spotify I think you will find a massive support. -
-
So basically once again the music labels show that they have absolutely no idea of what they are doing.
Spotify give people an alternative to downloading illegal music and still listen to it for free, and the best part is that it's so easy to use. In my not so humble opinion it's even easier to use than illegal services.
Personally I think most people will go back to downloading the music they can't find on spotify illegally. I don't support it, but for most people that's just the easiest alternative.
I hope you (spotify team) can talk some sense into the music industry, because these restrictions are just silly.- view 3 more comments

I agree totally, in fact (Hope I don't get killed for this) I just downloaded some tracks that weren't on spotify

I'd also like such a list, and if the list varies by country, making the list depend on a country selection on a web page. :-/
Also agreed with Paatos in that it could put pressure on the bands as this service gain more publicity. Surely they don't have any right to tell you they don't want to be on such a list. -
-
This list would be a "do-not-listen-or-buy" for me.
Maybe send some nice mails and clearly state that if they are not spotified, they are out in the cold.
If this can be coordinated like a petitition, some of them will listen... -

A clear statement about the ongoing tracks deletions finally, that's good! And i don't worry much, because you have promised in the forums that you are adding about 10.000 tracks per day (http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/to..., so you will catch up the number of deleted tracks very fast!? Adding 3.650.000 tracks in one year sounds too good to be true...

Is this why I've been unable to find Godspeed You Black Emperor albums, which I'm sure I played the other day?
-
-
-

I was a bit disappointed that you only featured one single album of Neal Morse, and now it's down to zero. Two other random disappointments are also the lack of artists like Beardfish and Steven Wilson.
-
-
In the name of transparency please provide a list of artists per country that have opted out! I buy a lot of physical records and I'm trying really hard not to support artists/labels that refuses to go with the times.
-
-
Ok, I understand that you have to do this. Still, I wish the artists would understand that the alternative to Spotify isn't buying their records.

How fitting that the song playing right now in my spotify is from an album not showing up in search (meaning it's slated for deletion?) and is about unanswered love.

I've asked around a bit and we're looking into who has his rights. The rights can change hands once and awhile and there's no master list of who owns what so it can take some time to track down if he's opted out, usually we just get notices to remove stuff without explination. I'll try and update when I hear more.
-
-
The rights to Zappas music is solely controlled by his widow and sons, and she ́s been one of the most hard-headed anti-piracy-anti everything - much to what i think the opposite of what he ́d want. So if you wanna make a statement, e-mail her. =P

Me too want lists, at least those artists that said no.
Miss Skinny puppy, I was really happy spotify had so much of them, but now=2 songs... :( -
-
Well, no matter whose fault it is, Spotify can no longer play the part of being my main music application. It's back to the pirate bay...
-
-
I'm new so I don't know what's been taken off or wasn't avaliable in the first place, I noticed the Juno soundtrack isn't up here, is one of the albums that was taken off or has it just not been added yet?
Also a few Kinks songs like Come Dancing and Picture Book -
-
It seems like all Bathory or Edge of Sanity albums available anymore. As a matter of fact, I can't find any music from Black Mark Productions. Has BM dropped out of Spotify? I live in .se if that matters.
I too would really appreciate a list of removals from Spotify, so we know if tracks / albums are missing temporarily or really have been removed.
Regards,
anders -
-
I also noticed that some of the artists I found through Spotify now is gone. One examples is Circus Maximus. I also miss Symphony X, Neal Morse and Tool.
It would be good if we could convince the artists that it's better to be available through spotiy than for example Pirate Bay. Thanks to Spotify i believe that many people has changed their "music source" to Spotify which is a superb legal source. -
-
If Spotify does not rectify this situation and bring back all the artists, they are doomed. Not everyone wants to listen to Britney Spears...
-
-
A lot of artists i listen to are now gone from Spotify :( Cancelling my subscription as of now....
It's very sad that the music industry doesn't want us to listen to their music!-
you are mad to cancel! At least keep listening to the free service! Or would you rather listen to 30 second clips on iTunes for the rest of your life?
-
-
-
-
-
What we - and you, Spotify! - need to make the labels understand is that any music not available in a format that we music listeners will accept, WILL be pirated. So they can either choose to license their tracks through those services that we want to use - such as Spotify - and make some money out of them, or watch their tracks being pirated and earn absolutely nothing.
Should be a simple choice. -
-
I'm glad that more users takes action and email the artists/bands. I have send email to management of some groups telling them to think over in what way their music should be available.
I think it's very important that the artists get paid for what they are doing and that customers can find new music easily. Spotify is a great music service combining both. -

I’m
Sad
It's really sad. The great application and all the good work that your developers have done counts for nothing if you don't have the music that people want to play. Spotify is definitely the best streaming application, technology wise, but this will all be lost on the majority of users if you don't have the music they want to play. I work as a software developer myself and feel sorry for the Spotify developers who have done a great job which is now being completely ruined by circumstances beyond their control. Sad. Sad. Sad. -
-
CHAMP
I’m
still happy it seems
Cheer up all sad people. There are still PLENTY of great music in Spotify. Frida Hyvönen was added recently, to name one favourite of mine. Also, from now on it can only get better with each update. And that's why I would like them to have frequent small updates, which is much better from a psychological point of view.-
Exactly JB! - I have Spotify talking to Last FM and ITunes talking to Last FM and all three apps open and have a great time. I've found more new music in the last month or so than in the previous 3 years.

This is really sad.. I dont think Spotify will manage to get much of the deleted music back. This application is useless on partys now and i doubt i will use it as much as i used to.
Its a very sad day.. -
-
It would be cool to get more details on added/removed music från Spotify to get an idea of how useful it is or will be as the main music application.
-
-
Oh. Just like that Spotify went from fantastic to rather useless. Most of the bands that got me interested are gone, and only about 10% of my searches actually return something playable (and only 5% with the artist I was looking for).
What makes me feel really disappointed is that I really, really thought that this would work; that record companies (and the odd artist) finally got it. How stupid of me.
I do not like to feel stupid.
Please provide a list of labels and artists that have either opted out or demanded country restrictions, so that I and other spotify users have the possibility to communicate our opinions to them (i.e. not buying their products, sending emails, placing calls etc). -
-
We all know that this service is beta, should not be surprised from crappy big labels.
However spotify should include more world music!
keep up the work !-
gpo: Being in beta is no excuse since Spotify have started to charge real money for a premium service. Google has all sorts of things in beta but they don't cost anything. As soon as you start charging for a service you have a certain amount of responsibility towards the paying customers. Spotify took a gamble starting the preminum subscription service while not out of beta. That gamble may now be coming back to haunt them with all the bad feelings these changes are causing.

It's a shame really. Music isn't hard to get ahold of - the tracks I used to listen to on Spotify I will now resort to downloading them illegally instead. If the recording companies could just realize this.
Spotify is still the best service out there, though, and I won't use it any less despite the music library thinning out a bit. Would appreciate a full list of at least the labels of artists that have been removed, so we the users can put some pressure on them through emails and the like. -

Hi guys!
It's sad to here this story, but I'm sure you'll fix everything again soon. You've created an absolutely wonderful software, and I hope you expand beyond all the Apples and oranges out there, all the while sticking to the principles you set out with.
2 issues.. First, would it be safe to assume that as of now, if an artist is available in the search function, they are here to stay next week and beyond?
The second issue is about why sometimes an album of an artist appear under "appears on" rather than "Albums", even if all the songs on it are solely by that artist. An example of this is Bon Iver's "For Emma, forever ago", and I think it's also a problem with Gomez. It doesn't really matter for small bands, but it becomes a bit annoying when there are lots of albums and compilations, by the artist etc.
Thanks for reading and best of luck!-
To answer your questions:
- If you can find an artists or track via search then it will not be removed next week as all those tracks have already been removed from search.
- I'm not sure I understand your second issues completely, when I search for Bon Iver it shows For Emma under "Albums" not appears on. Do you get this in the artist view or in the search view? -
-
In the artist view.
Just to avoid confusion, I'm not talking about the song "For Emma", I'm talking about the album "For Emma, Forever Ago"; the album, for me, comes under "Appears on", and theres no "Albums" there, just "Top hits", "Singles" and "Appears on".. -

I feel very sad about the disappearance of many songs spotify because its service is simply great, and we hope that artists and record companies think better and add new songs to the software.
I have a question: Red Hot Chilli Peppers is one of the groups that do not want to see either their songs? Are very few albums of them, including by the way, californication, Stadium Arcadium...
So yes, I will continue using spotify because I love the program and is very easy to use.
Greetings from Spain! -
-
1. Will you provide a general list of labels and bands that have opted out and who wants country-restrictions? So that we can do the only thing we can do to help, which is let them know how we feel.
2. If not, why?-
All the major labels have some sort of restrictions on the music, some are better than others in terms of number of songs restricted. We've mentioned some of the big bands that have opted out like Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Beatles etc, they are listed on our FAQ. We continue to work with the labels to try and get them to drop restrictions and provide more content, it's an ongoing process and we'll keep at it for as long as it takes.

I am looking for the perfect media player, that plays any song, whether I own the cd/mp3 or it is some recommendation I play through streaming with some subscription. When I installed Spotify I hoped in some future it could be that music player some day.
Due to these latest catalogue changes I cannot listen through Spotify to lots of cds I own. And this means that depending on the music I want to listen to I have to use one application or another. So far for usability.-
That would be an awesome music application. Didn't knew I wanted that until now but now I really really do.

It's quite sad this is happenin'. But on the otherside of the story I understand the artists that are already popular. They want to sell CD's to earn money.
With Spotify and the extraordinary sharing possibility, I have discovered alot of new bands and songs, and I have bought the CD's. I would never have discovered them usually.
So Thank You Spotify crew! -

You said, you had millions of tracks still to add into your database, does this include a lot of back catalogue stuff, could I expect to see songs like hit the road jack by ray charles and out of time by chris farlowe added over the up and coming months?

Yes, there is still a fair bit of back catalogue that we are working on adding from the major record labels.

Andres: Lots of people here seem to be of the opinion that it's not Spotify's fault and that we should be protesting to the artists and record companies, but you are not helping by not telling us which artists are being removed and which record labels they are with. There is a big ground swell of anger and protest here but nobody knows who to direct it towards because you're not telling us anything. We want to lobby the record labels and artists to try and get them to change their licensing methods but we can't do that if we don't know who they are.-
no anger here, it's all lovely
-
-
First off it's difficult to list everything since it will vary from country to country. We also have relationships with the labels that we are trying to use to convince them that these restrictions no longer make sense and we're a little hesitant to release a "swell of anger" upon them. Bands that flat out deny us like Metallica we will let you know but with other labels it's more of a matter building a relationship and getting them onboard.

Great service, hopefully this will just be a temporary setback. Fortunately my taste is mainstream crap so I seem largely unaffected ;-), though will miss Zappa (not sure how he asked you to take the tracks down). Is there any way that users can help speed up the process of uploading music you already hold licenses for? Send me a few CDs and I'll help - though maybe there's a way of publishing a list and getting people who own it to upload it. Have flagged this sorry tale to the Guardian newspaper which had been praising your services. Hopefully they'll help shame the record companies or whoever into the 21st century.
-
Andrew, now that they only have to add music I'm sure the process of adding songs will be much faster.

listen folks, why worry? There's still loads of good stuff on Spotify. You can still find fantastic new music of all sorts and lose yourself for hours - just now I'm listening to a playlist containing among others Elbow, Doves, Death Cab for Cutie, Feist, A Certain Ratio, the Fall, Leonard Cohen, Roisin Murphy, The Ditty Bops, Devendra Banhart, Jack Kerouac etc etc. Or if you want some Frank Sinatra it's there, or some russian folks songs or some IrisH jigs or whatevah
Who gives a stuff if you can't listen to some bands like Zep? Come on, you have all that stuff ripped already.
Keep listening everybody, and spread the word.. -

One good thing about this - the Wiggles have gone, which means my Last FM chart will get less embarrassing now that my kids won't be filling it with Wiggles tunes from Spotify every day :)

Here's another thing, I've already found new stuff on Spotify then gone out and bought the CD so that I can rip it to my usual mobile devices (hello Mr.Jobs) Have the music labels not figured out this is a win win situation?
-
in some cases it's not the labels but the bands, beatles, led zepplin, pink floyd, metallica it's to do with the bands as they are signed to labels with their back catalogues on here, all those bands have nothing on lastfm either

Which countries?
=============
Dear Andres
I've recently discovered Spotify; it’s a fantastic service and has changed how I listen to music, and enabled me to explore new artists and genres I would not have done without it.
Spotify is now spreading like wildfire through my friends, family and colleagues! However, many of them, and their connections, (and their connections connections, and so on) live outside of the UK where I live and some have already reported that they can not access the service *at all* as it is not available in their country.
It would be highly beneficial if there were a list of countries where restrictions applied in respect of the use of your service. I do not mean on a track-by-track basis, but where people will bbe unable to access it from.
If you already have this (and I did search your site) I welcome the opportunity to read it.
Thanks for delivering such an amazing service.-
Hi Theo,
We've listed these countries on our FAQs. Spotify Free is available in Finland, Sweden, Norway, UK, Spain and France. In most other countries Spotify Premium is available. -
-
-
-
-
Expand during crisis! Give all existing users additionally 5 invites so we can spread the word. With enough users of this excellent service, the record companies and stubborn artists will have more difficlulties saying no to Spotify. Or at least give me some more invites ;-)
-
-
-
Totally agree with stenbom, what i dont understand is why smaller bands have disappeared.. spotify must be a great chance for them to be discovered.
(ex: Kapten Röd, Kultiration, Svenska Akademien, Trentemöller)
Will still support spotify, which is a great service -
-
one idea would be to add a function that made it possible to play music from your pc in spotify. then you could get the songs you realy miss other places, but still make playlists with them and spotifys songs together.
-
-
I just cancelled the automatic subscription renewal for my premium account.
I've just lost the following artists:
- Alec Empire, Zappa, Venetian Snares, Coil, Merzbow vs Nordvargr, Aube, Pan Sonic, Jamie Saft, Iberian Spleen, The higher intelligence agency + Biosphere, 1200 micrograms ...
This is about trust!
If I cannot trust that a playlist that I play one day using Spotify, is playable
the next day then I've to go back to other sources and to keep the music
myself at home in my computer and use SimplifyMedia to distribute it to all
places where I need it.
Today the list was reduced by the artists that I mention above - what
about tomorrow...?
To Spotify: You must be much much more open with what artists/lables you
remove/add. Otherwise I cannot judge if I want it or not.
Kindly give us the complete list!
Best regards-
I agree, I'm out to.

I’m
pessimistic
Andres - Sorry to sound so down on everything, but all that has happened in the last few days is just so depressing. You and Spotify’s PR Manager (Sophia Bendz) have said over the past few days on the forums and in the presss (and I am not quoting you directly here but paraphrasing)...
- The records companies allowed Spotify to launch without regional restrictions as a temporary measure on the understanding that a solution to this would be implemented later (Sophia Bendz said this in an interview with Computer Sweden yesterday). This means Spotify knew all along that regional restrictions would have to be enforced.
- When the record companies ask you to remove something they often don’t give you any reason. They just ask you to remove something and you must comply. This is, I presume, why you can’t tell us why something has been removed, as you don’t know either.
- You really don’t want us to complain to the record companies in case it affects, in any way, the already fragile relationship that you have with them.
All of this just demonstrates to me two things:
1) The amount of uncontrolled and unregulated power the record companies have over Spotify (and other streaming and on-line music services). They dictate to you what music you can and can’t have and where and when you can use it, and they can also take it away at any time with no justification or reason except that they say so.
2) Spotify has known all along that what is currently happening would eventually happen but they have been less than upfront in disclosing this to their customers.
I really hope that Spotify is a success. I feel you have a great product and your developers have done a great job. However, given all that I said above, I am not so optimistic about the future given the current attitude of the record companies and the amount of uncontrolled and unregulated power they appear to have and their lack of understanding of the on-line world and the digital marketplace.-
I understand your concerns and I hope that with some extra work we can regain your trust. While the labels do have a lot of power we're pretty confident now that no other major issues will appear and you'll see our catalogue continue to only grow. As I said in the post not being upfront when w launched was a mistake and we're sorry for that, we had hoped to minimize the impact as much as possible before making any changes.
(If it's ok with you, I'm going to delete your comment from the Franz' blog to keep the answer here where it is more relevant?) -
-
That's OK. You're right the post is not really relevant to the Franz Ferdinand blog entry, it was just me ranting :-)
You haven't lost my trust, I still think Spotify is great and the technology behind it is much better than all other streaming services I have seen. It's just that the actions of the record companies are so depressingly familiar to everything they have been doing since they took down Napster. It's been a long time since they did that and despite great advances in technology we don't seem to be any nearer to the all you can eat, whenever and wherever you like music subscription model. The record companies just can't let go of regional restrictions and adopt a global marketing model. -
-
-
-
-
Bands like metallica are only going to end up having their music downloaded illegally by not putting their music up on legal sites like spotify or lastfm, luckily for me most of the bands who are not up here I am not a big fan of the only ones who I would like to see return are beatles and chili peppers.
There's quite a few 60s songs missing from the database but I think that's because they haven't been added yet rathar then been taken off -
-
I asked Sebastian at Wonderland Records why their artists were disappearing from Spotify when he himself had been seemingly enthusiastic about the platform. This was his reply:
“
S
“
For the non-swedes reading this, the essential part of his message is that he did *not* intentionally remove the tracks in question. His artists having disappeared from the service is just the result of some sort of update, as he puts it.
This could very well account for at least *some* of the missing artists. -

Ye Old Music Lables need to drag themselves into the DIGITAL AND WORLDWIDE age and stop being a bunch of old legal farts.......
-

This is so frustrating, yet again its an example of record companies running around like headless chickens and panicing. Instead of listening to revolutionary companies like Spotify and working with you on how to move forward to sell their bands they block progression.
Ive discovered many new bands thanks to you and as a result bought the records either from a good old record shop or on line.
Really think they should consider their antiquated legal system. -

Oh damn I lost some of my favourite tracks. I also had to cancel my subscription for the time not knowing how this all will end up in Finland. I really hope things work out this time, Spotify is an amazing service!

I hope they will sign to other labels so some of the artists might come back again
-

It's not the labels that are the problem it's the artists, if you look at the labels they're signed to the majority of them have their back catalogues up on here
-
-
Oh forgot to ask have the tracks which are now restriced to certain countries been removed already from the searchbox in the countries they're not playable in?

Not all of them. Because it takes some time to implement the changes they won't all be in effect until the middle of next week.

Already posted on the blog:
On top of all the music disapperaing, I have noticed after a couple of hours of exchanging music links with a friend in Sweden that FAR too many links I recieved from him gave the message “This track is currently not available in Germany”. I one case, a classical singer (Olga Borodina) he got 10 albums and I had none at all.
I really believe(-d?) that Spotify was the future of music listening and I am a paying costumer. If this keeps going though, I won’t be a costumer at all as the free edition isn’t available in Germany. As Spotify is also, according to an employee on the boards “predominantly focusing on Scandinavia, the UK, France and Spain” I can’t see why I should pay full price for half a service.
-----------
I'm still a Spotify-believer, but living in Germany I can no more be a missionary. A few days ago I would recommend Spotify to all my german friends, saying that this was the best 10 Euros per month I've ever spent in my life. The way things are now, as long as there is no free-edition for people in Germany, there will be no recommendations from me, and I'm seriously thinking about cancelling my own paid account and only use the free-option when I'm in Sweden (I'm swedish but live in Germany).
I'm not blaming Spotify or the record industry for this. Spotify is still listed as a beta product and is still a fantastic service. I doubt that there will ever be one single service where all music will be available, and I also do support the artists rights to their products. It must be up to Spotify and artists/record companies to land contracts that satifies both ends, and that will never be achieved by threatening with black lists for people not signing or with illegal downloading.
I wish Spotify all the best and I will definately keep my interest for the product in the future. -
-
So this is it. I lost all my timbuktu tracks and i've lost alll my Josh Rouse songs. 1/3 ot my my "chill" list is gone. The "final week" hasn't even started. I really wonder, and need some information. Is this all or is there more to come. If so I'll quit my paid subscription and maybe return in the future.
It's time for more information now -
-
I had a mailconversation with a representative of Century Media (Dark Tranquillity, The Haunted) on why they were not available at Spotify. What she answered was basicly that they were in the process of signing up with spotify and that their music would hopefully be available by the end of February. I hope she was telling the truth and that it is the same with many other labels.
keep up the good work! -

ANOTHER REASON TO HOLD YOUR HORSES:
The following can be read on Timbuktu’s home page (http://www.timbuk.nu/gastbok.php) as a reply from the record company to a question about the missing albums Spotify:
“JuJu: Oroa dig inte, Spotify håller på med någon slags uppdatering av sin data. Vi har inte gjort något, de Timbuktu albumen som är borta är de som legat där sen Spotify betan och dom ska tillbaks igen.Vi försöker få in så mycket som möjligt på Spotify, inte ta bort. Big up!”
Translation:
“JuJu: Don’t worry, Spotify are doing some kind of update of their data. We haven’t done anything, the Timbuktu albums that are gone are the ones that have been there since the Spotify beta and they are coming back again. We are trying to add as much as possible to Spotify, not remove. Big up!”
I don’t know how much of the music this applies to, but I don’t understand why Spotify aren’t saying anything about this if a lot of the music is just gone temporarily due to updates. Some substantial information wouldn’t hurt the situation... -
-
So let me get this straight, You have an announcement about what is happening and telling us that whats gone is gone.
And then we get info from artists that they know they are just gone temporarily. Is it true?
I guess You ́re trying to build a community here? guess what, wont work if we dont get all the facts...-
We hope to get all the artists back that we are removing this week but if or when that may happen is currently unknown. As we add music we will communicate what we add and hopefully some of your favorites will return in time.

I’m
happy
I have now put up a blog where I try to keep track of music being added to Spotify. It's in Swedish, but it's easy enough to understand how it works even if you don't know any Swedish.
Basically you see a lot of album covers which you can click on and then listen to the album in Spotify. The idea with the blog is to help Spotify users to keep track of some of the great new albums and artists being added to the library. We need to think positive about the future and from now on lots of music should be added.
Furthermore, in case someone wants to know, I can keep track of the changes because I'm a Spotify addict. :-)
Check it out here: http://spotifynews.wordpress.com -

Excellent Jb, will you just be doing new releases or back catalogue stuff as well
-
I will be doing back catalogue as well,

Thanks for your blog, it's proving very helpful, i just found through it that a classic t-rex album is now up on here

About Tool: Their unique selling proposition (USP) is to be very pretentious with everything they do.
Every album is treated very carefully and they don't add videos or mp3 samples on their MySpace profile. For example, when licensing three songs to "Guitar Hero: World Tour" they only insisted if the game developer created a special Tool atmosphere when the songs are played.
You may say that the artists are conservative but the Tool case is actually quite unique. They know how to treat their brand and they do it god damn well! -

The sh*t has hit the fan -
Tiesto is gone
Blank & Jones are gone
Promoe is gone
I'm gone.. -
-
Wow, haven't seen the full impact soon, since the cleanup in playlists aren't implemented, but searching for most of the artists on my "master" playlist, i get an "artist not found message".
So dark times are coming..
Seems like the whole genre of trance music is gone..
The whole "Cafe del Mar" series are gone as well..
This REALLY gets me sad.. -

I’m
not feeling inspired by Spotify's lack of information
It's all gone very quiet on Spotify's side of things. I haven't seen a single reply or post today in either the forum here or on the blog from Andres or anyone else employed by Spotify.
Are they hoping this will all just blow over or is it even worse that that and they now see that the changes to the catalogue are even worse than we all feared.- view 3 more comments

Sorry Andres, but I'm getting tired of Spotify telling us we have to do something to fix this problem. Why should I contact any artist to get them to sign up to Spotify? I pay you 99kr per month so that you will sort all this out and provide all the worlds music to me easily and in one place. If you can't do that on your own and for the price you advertise then the monthly fee begins to feel less attractive than it was when I signed up.
-
-
Sorry, I slightly misread your earlier question but you're right, users shouldn't have to do anything and it's up to us to secure the proper licenses and that's what we'll keep working at until we reach our goal.

I believe in Spotify, I think it's getting better every day
-
-
I see the arctic monkeys seem to be one of the bands who have opted out as nothing comes up for them in search not that I really care, can't stand the band but I do find it funny that a band who made it famous from people listening to their music for free on myspace now won't let people listen for free to their music

Yes hopefully spotify is doing a deal with Domino, Domino own the rights to some of pavments records
-
-
Domino is signed, we haven't received all of their content so hopefully they will be available at some point soon.
-
-
-
-
I actually really miss them.. I hope they will join soon
-
-
And talking about opting out, The Beatles may have but McCartney is on here and I wondered what's the chance of getting Lennon's stuff on here, lastfm has most of it so I think the chances would be good, i'm optimistic
-
-
I not think Beatles will ever be added think of the issue with ITUNES.
I keep on saying this to spotify add world artist on the list than the usual POP ! -
-
Well, I guess my http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/to... is no more interesting for future use - but to have a down to earth map of 'technically-challenged-money-mongers... or erhm, record companies / artists would be nice still.. and a inverted one for the spotify-sales person for great comparison yadayada.
Perhaps you could make a opted out page - with links to a already nicely formated mail to just cut and paste and if ok with rules and regulations with the bands contact info? You have the support of a community - use it were market skills fails - public opinion does matter.. -
-
Please stop auto replacing songs or make it more accurate. The auto replacer can't tell the difference between studio and live versions of songs. What's worse is it seems some songs that haven't been removed from the catalogue also have been replaced.
Now I have to play every song in every playlist to see if it's the wrong version. -
-
Can I ask about Madness and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, will their music be on here, they're both signed to major labels and on lastfm they have their full tracks so I don't think it's a case about them opting out
-
-
-
We hope so, we'll keep working to get the rights to the songs in all countries.
-
-
-
-
-
It ́s one thing they have to remove artists or songs but why do they add restricted music that can only be played in certain countries. I ask you to not add these tracks because not all have access to it.
What ́s the difference with Last FM where all artists are included. You should perhaps offer things like Last fm maybe bigger artists will work with you. -
-
Umm Rezz have you been on lastfm I love it but there are lot of bands missing from there which are on spotify and the one's who are on there who aren't on here are bound to appear soon
-
-
I think its ridiculous that they have removed Absolute Dance compilations since they are swedish. Shouldn ́t it work in Sweden?
I don ́t know anymore it ́s suddenly down to record compnies terms again if we use this service, they have won once again and ruined a good service for music lovers. -
-
I don't understand these restrictions anyway, I thought it was down to if a song is avaliable digitally in that country, if you can buy it on itunes it shouldn't be restricted imo
-
You have to see Spotify as a radio, not a store. But I agree with you about the restrictions...
-
-
Having had a look at was uploaded this week I think I undrstand restrictions a bit more, america columbia uploaded unchained by johnny cash but over here in the uk the rights are owned by Rhino and they haven't added the album yet

Is there any chance that we can have Björn Rosenström back on spotify? I've also noticed my favourite cd's Clubland with various artist been blocked from sweden any chance getting those back aswell? =/ Anyhow, thanks for a awesome service!

I’m sorry to see that my playlists now is a fragment what they used to be. My trance and chillout list is almost annihilated. More than 75 percent of the stuff is gone.
I’ll give this some time, but I rarely use Spotify any more. I just cant find my music and I’m back to my collection of mp3-files again.
It’s sad days, because I was a real Spotify junkie. Just loved it. The best thing that’s happened to Internet since Internet itself, until the record industry f****d it up with stupid restrictions. But I was billed today so I guess I'll hang around for another month but then I don't know. This doesn't seem to work for me any more. If I can't find the music I want then It's quite useless. -
-
I would like to know how much of the resticted music we will get back I have to admit when I heard music would be restricted I thought it was going to be less mainstream stuff that may only be avaliable to buy in certain countires not mainstream like albums by Lindsay Lohan, Tom Waits, Def Leppard etc
-
I want my beloved electronic stuff back! All the wonderful trance, chillout and futurepop that was available before D-day. Now I can't even rely on a complete catalogue of a "mainstream" band such as Muse. It's surly sad times.
And then I would like to have a comment from the guys on Spotify about what really happened. It's just not fair to promote a service that has about 90 percent of all released music and then cut the index to what it is today. I don't even think it's more then a few percent of all released music at this time. I know that a oddball like me isn't quite the normal music listener. But that's one reason that the index must be more extensive. Because the normal listener can switch on the radio station of their choice and listen to whatever they want until their ears bleed. I can't even find my music in stores! I'm doomed to piracy because I refuse to pay insane amounts of money for downloaded "low calorie" stuff from suppliers like Itunes. -
-
-
-
-
I have all of Muse's albums avaliable for me anyway big trance albums etc that your missing Stefan?
-
Probably just the stupid restrictions that working against me an throe my criminal activities. But I'm not interested in the big trance. I got plenty of Infected Mushroom, Astral Projektion, Astrix and stuff like that. Friends of mine are quite found of supplying me with that stuff. To bad the artist dosen't get paid when I listen to them.
I missed the other 80-90 percent that they took from me. Goldstripp, Conjore One, Loxitrop ... Fun things like that. But I got HUNDREDS of red links in my playlists. -

Yesterday 25% of my songs were removed, today another 25% of my music is gone. What's up with the "We don't plan to remove more songs" jizz u said =(
-
-
I noticed a few more of my songs gone I thought it was down to cache however one of the songs I didn't add to my playlist until after the removing songs buisness was suppose to have end
-
-
Also noticing new stuff disappearing that was added recently. Little Boots was added last week but now it is removed, The Mae Shi's album was also removed. Would be handy to see a list of all the stuff getting removed to keep some kind of track of it.
-
-
I must agree.. It seems like the removal still goes on.. Would be nice with a comment from one of the officials ?
-
-
Bump...
So that maybe Andres can address the new questions in this thread. -
-
Two albums have gone missing for me but they were ones that were added last week so it could be they shouldn't have been added in the first place
-
I'll see if I can find some more information and take the albums from your other thread. There's always going to be a small number of tracks that come and go because licenses change hands and artists renegotiate deals but it shouldn't be a big number.

My opinion is that the only thing we can do is to buy premium accounts and show the unfriendly labels what are they loosing. Thanks to Spotify I discovered some new and great bands that in no other way I could listen to them here in Spain (legally, of course). I'm missing a lot of songs from my favourite artists and bands like "The unseen guest" since the last cut out.
People, Let's show the music industry how Spotify is evolving the concept. Less fight against P2P downloads and more doing our life easier and funny. That's how I want to "waste" my money. Everybody in the world deserve it. No more music frontiers, no more cultural frontiers. -
-
Many tracks are gone again. Hillsong, Michael W. Smith, Don Moen, Lenny LeBlanc, Narnia (curse of a generation).
It's sad. But I like the new future with facebook and iTunes. The best way to fight the record company is to suport Spotify, not disclose them. Please get them back!-
oh DON'T!! the removal of Hillsong made me furious and i'm trying to get some sort of Contact Number for them to complain. Also Gone is Michael Neale and I can't even BUY it here. Spofify use 7Digital and that service is not available outside the U.S despite Spotify itself not working in the U.S - unless thats changed. Really upset here but yes i do still believe in Spotify

Recently removed: Benny Benassi, the Postal Service, Grand Tone Music... Also gone is the option "Replace unplayable track" from the contextual menu.

"Our dream is to create a music experience where users can play whatever music they want, whenever they want"
that dream is still being blackened by all the errors in the database; errors that continue to grow with your catalogue without any means of correcting them- view 1 more comment

@Waiter - That's not how it works. The meta-data is not user generated. The meta-data that Spotify uses comes from the record labels themselves. Yes, I know that's hard to believe but it's true and is a good indication of how little respect the record labels have for the artists they represent!
-
-
digithed is correct. Of course some errors are caused by Spotify as well, but usually the errors in Spotify will also be present in other digital services...
And when Spotify do cause an error, like the recent issue with "the XX" becoming "X ", they can fix it quite fast... -
-

I hope they get some of the bands back... Many good ones I listen to are gone! :( Metal bands have seen got a bad cut down. >.<
You'll work hard and try to get them back, won't you? :) Bands like Tristania, Lacrimas Profundere, Battlelore, Beseech, Leaves' Eyes... -
-
I Agree. Most of my tunes i cant play anymore. The reason i paid for this service is for the fact i could access this amazing music. I made an amazing playlist which i have lost most of. It makes you wanna download illegally as i felt i could have bought the cds for the price i have been paying every month. GUTTED!!

Tool is a case similar to Metallica in that they have opted out of streaming on Spotify, we would love to include them.
Metallica are just old and frightened!
