Spotify being used illegally in unsupported countries
There are some people who were allowed to keep their accounts after the beta test even though they are in unsupported countries.
Now, proxies are being used to sign up for Spotify accounts, but these accounts are not stopped from signing in (even without a proxy in the Spotify settings!).
I fear that this illegal usage will prompt the labels that are signed on to leave or file a lawsuit, and ruin it for the legal listeners in those countries and in the officially supported ones.
What can be done about this problem?

Inappropriate?I believe they have solved the proxy work-around from some countries so you cannot register that way anymore, but that's only what I've heard from a friend that tried to do it, so I'm not really sure how true it is.
Would suck indeed for us who are actually paying for this though. -
A friend of mine who also tried this says that they have only blacklisted a few proxies, so with a little searching for a new proxy one can register, and that the accounts made before the blacklist are still working.
It would seem as though Spotify is not verifying the IP address when signing in. -
Inappropriate? For 99% of the cases where this happens, checking to see if there's a open proxy on the default ports would solve the problem (basically checking four ports, with two of them being standard proxy ports and the other two being common hacked ports) .
I did this with remarkable efficiency on some large forums I ran a few years back.
For people who have private proxies (i.e., pay for them or get hooked up via a friend), there's not really a lot that can be done -- though in some cases, original IP can be grabbed from looking at the computer's network configuration.
I believe so long as Spotify are doing what they can to prevent *casual* misuse, it'll be fine.
Remember that there are also real reasons people have to go through proxies or tunnels -- we had an office in North America that due to legal reasons had to tunnel lots of traffic through our office in Stockholm.
If the networks Spotify are on get routed through Sweden and the VPN tunnel, it's not exactly illegal behavior.
The edge cases are always the most difficult to tackle, and I'm confident the labels realize this and would rather see 90% of the population use legal options and let the other 10% slide, instead of pulling out.
Then again, it IS the music industry we're talking about ;-)

Inappropriate?Hi,
Thanks for your concern. We are well aware of the issues with people signing up via proxies and are taking measures when necessary. -
