Spotify keeps pausing at random intervals
Spotify keeps pausing at random intervals. The playback progress meter pauses also. I have the same problem on both my home computer and work machine. Both are Macs and there is no problem with the internet connection. This problem seems to be getting more and frequent.

Inappropriate?Does playback restart on it's own or do you have to start the music yourself? Do you get any sort of error message?
-
Inappropriate? No error message. It start on it ́s own. Sometimes after 5 or 10 seconds. It happens every 20 o 30 seconds. The problem is happening about a week ago
-
Inappropriate?Exactly the same problem here on my Mac with a premium account - connection is fine, Mac is otherwise idle, but playback just stops.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate? Is possible of compatibility with snow leopard? I ́m using snow leopard a month ago.
-
Inappropriate?Same problem here, on Windows Vista, using premium account. This is not a mac-problem. It seems more like spotify is stopping du buffer, whcih may be caused by capaity /server/bandwidth) problems on Spotify's side.
I’m bloody annoyed
-
Inappropriate?I have enabled High bitrate. All people with this problem have this enabled?
-
Inappropriate?Yes, I have enabled high bitrate. Also, for some reason, the problem often goes away (for a while anyway) when I switch to a different artist.
-
Inappropriate?Interesting, if you experience this problem try turning High Bit rate off and see if that helps.
-
Inappropriate?I have exactly the same problem. Been using the free version (i.e. low bit rate) all day long for several months with no problems. Upgraded to premium last week and enabled high bit rate and now get tracks stuttering/pausing for several seconds at a time all day long. Switching back to low bit rate gets rid of the problem but the high bit rate was the main reason I upgraded to premium in the first place.
p.s. I have an 8Mb/s internet connection so it is nothing to do with that. -
Inappropriate?I have exactly the same problem - I'll stop my subscription if it's not fixed quickly.
-
Inappropriate?Do as I got suggested... select tracks and use offline mode. This will at least let you enjoy spotify a bit...
I’m undecided.
-
Inappropriate?Would it be possible to get a word back from Spotify staff if they have figured out what causes this problem and a way yo fix it?
-
Inappropriate?I have disabled high bit rate playback and still experience the cut out, although not as frequent. It seems to me the Spotify servers are struggling.
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?I take that back - its just as bad with high bit rate disabled. And I've now discovered when I disable high bit rate, it turns itself back on after some time?!?! If this continues for much longer I'm going to want a refund of my subscription because this is becoming difficult to tolerate.
I’m VERY pissed off
-
You probably forgot to push "apply" after making the change.
I'm on high bitrate and have no problems whatsoever. There only was some temporary issues a couple of days ago.
Edit: But those issues were exactly like the ones described in this thread. -
yeah i wasn't hitting Apply, thanks mate. -
Inappropriate? We're still looking into it, not quite sure what is causing the pauses yet.
-
Inappropriate? Also, if someone can paste info from the Console when it pauses that might be helpful for us.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Andres, what do you mean by info from the console? Do you want a screen grab or just general details?
-
Inappropriate? We believe we've found and solved the issue now. If you continue to experience this type of pausing please let us know.
-
No you haven't fixed it! I've had over 20 pauses on one album. :( -
Inappropriate?I'm also getting this problem of tracks freezing. Sometimes it goes for hours without issues, then other times I get dozens of freeze-ups on a single track.
Vista HP 64 bit
I’m frustrated
-
forgot to add - premium spotify with high bitrate, hardware acceleration makes no difference either -
Inappropriate?I have the same problem too, but is after 9 seconds exactly everytime, if i forward the song to 20 seconds then its ok. It happens with every song! Extremly annoying!! Can ́t listen to spotify anymore if this doesnt go away
I’m jävligt förbannad
-
Inappropriate?I had the same problem many days but it disappeared this morning after restarting Spotify.
-
Inappropriate?Problem seemed better for a while. Now having issues again, but not as bad as a week ago. Hope you get it sorted before next subs are due. :P
-
Inappropriate? Also experiencing problems with random stops in songs on Spotify. I am a premium user using Vista. The problem is there as we speak , extremely irritating. Hope the problem gets solved soon!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? Now Spotify isn't playing at all and I can't do searches - agh!
I am EXTREMELY fed up with it.
Being a relatively understanding person, I will wait ONE MORE week for Spotify to LET US KNOW what the problem is and how it can be fixed. If no joy, my subscription will be cancelled and I will expect a refund for the non-working days.
I’m extremely pissed off!
-
Inappropriate?racheblue - have you tried uninstalling spotify and reinstalling, wont cure the pauses, but might get it working again. HTH
-
Thanks daab, I'll try that :) -
So far, re-installing has helped a little but I still get random pauses from which I have to forward to the next track to continue play. I don't pay Spotify £9.99 per month for this kind of inconvenience! -
Inappropriate?I've had some pauses within an hour or two now. Some of them just a second or three, but now it just stopped for longer than that... I had to change track and back again to get it running...
I have not been using Spotify very much or for very long (some weeks), but my father who has been using it much more has asked me about these random stops - I just thought it was his connection being too slow, but I'm more doubtful about that now. My connection here, at work now, is very fast.
I've got Spotify with ads, running on win XP. My father has Spotify premium, but bitrate set to low, also Windows XP.

this answers the question

Inappropriate?I doubt it's got anything to do with you're internet connection. Even a 1mbit download speed should in theory be three times fast enough to stream the spotify high bitrate of 320bit/s without having to buffer. Do the spotify ads still call it 320 megabytes/s? :D
My guess is spotify can't cope with the high demands, with so many peeps listening on free version.
So hey Mr. spotify, how about us premium customers get an early Xmas present in the shape of a nice big fat juicy high speed pipe all for ourselves? I'll even give you another £9.99 in a couple of weeks....deal?
I’m groveling in a prostrate manner!
-
Inappropriate?Is this a record?
This morning I had a pause on a tune that I timed as lasting 45 minutes. I wonder if spotify keep logs of what users listen to, because I tell no lie.
So it looks like the £9.99 deal is off then! :(
Any spotify rep care to comment?
I’m feeling resigned!
-
We haven't had any significant problems streaming, it's possible that there are temporary local issues but more likely they wouldn't last very long.
Regardless of the speed of your connection it is possible that your ISP is throttling p2p connections which Spotify uses and that could cause this behaviour. Which ISP do you use? -
Inappropriate?well during the 45 mins, everything else using the connection was fine.
I contacted my isp and they don't throttle p2p connections, even at peak times, nor do they block any ports. I'm paying well over the odds for my adsl connection, it's one of the very best respected isps, I'd just prefer not to say who.
They did suggest my router could be causing issues, specifically the heuristic side of the firewall, but come on, it ain't gonna spend 45 mins deciding if a chunk of streaming binary is cow pats or not?
Thanks for replying -
Does the issue occur at random intervals or certain times of the day? Also, did this just start recently? When it happens try exiting Spotify and logging in again, that might help us determine if it's a specific access point that you're connecting to that is the problem. -
it's random mostly i'd say, but early evening here in uk seems the worst time -
Inappropriate?lagging all day long! using latest ubuntu release. same problem om work-computer and windows xp. Doesnt get any better when i log of and log in again. Same problem..... seems like your servers are getting to much load to handle...... premium user using high bitrate in sweden.
I’m sad

Inappropriate? My premium spotify has been running smooth last couple of days, until this evening where i've had a few short pauses on various tracks.
@reps You still haven't sorted this...... tick tock!
I’m punching a cheesecake
-
Inappropriate?Had at least a dozen pauses today already. Not happy.
My subscription is being cancelled, although I shall keep an eye on things and return to the premium service if things improve.
Please don't blame this on my connection. I have more than enough speed to cope with an uninterrupted 320kbps stream of audio.
Cheers
I’m listening to the radio!
-
Inappropriate? What a joke. Now getting more pause than music, great!
