Spotify strangles my internet connection.
We have a wireless home network at my home, my mother and sister using laptops and im using a PC with a cable to the modem to get more speed.
My problem is; everytime anyone else in our network using spotify i can barely do anything on my computer, especially play games. Forinstance Counterstrike, my ping shiftening between 55 - 500 ping as soon as anyone uses spotify and when we shutdown spotify it works completly fine.
What should i do? this pisses me off.
Sincerely / A pissed off spotify user.

Inappropriate?that's simple... with spotify on, you're downloading (as free user)at 160kbit per/sec minimum... 2 users on spotify... that's 320 kbit minimum... 320 and 640 respectively for premium users... that's a lot of download
the problem most of the time is not really the dl rate, as spotify use a p2p architecture to lighten the payload on servers you're constantly uploading to others users... and your upload capacities are far from your download capacity.... most of the time
typically my 8M adsl accepts 800kbits in dl and only 100 in upload
I don't know exactly how much spotify takes on upload but it's surely something between 30 and 80 so you can browse internet anyway.
counterstrike and most games eats most of the upload even alone running, you can browse internet as it not really heavy on upload, think that every pic or text you dl in an internet page your computer have to request it one by one so you experience some slightly slower internet browsing due to the upload limitation.
so when you have both spotify and a game who use internet for real time positionning the upload capacity of your adsl line is like a bottle neck... you may not use the whole dl capacity but you're eating the upload capacity.
I haven't played CS recently but as far as I remember you can specify the maximum rates you're using. check with some hardcore player it must be something like CL_rate and other stuff. It helps to minimize the upload needs of the game. On some servers you need to be at some fixed rates they specify so you maybe already played on those rates... just lower it and play on servers with no policy for the rates ( those with a policy on rates just kick you if you don't fit)
it's simple at this time NO adsl provider provides an ADSL who permits to do both. (well some 20M lines almost reach what you expect) If you want that kind of service you must try opticalfiber internet acces.
in France we have an option to have a symmetrical opticalfiber with 100M/100M who fits that kind of needs. It's mostly avaible in big cities check with your local provider.
I’m amused
