Stream quality sometimes dramatically drops in linux
Sometimes while I listen to music on my linux laptop the stream quality suddendly drops below any standards. It sounds like it would be something like 64kbit or less vorbis stream. I first thought it happened because I ran out of bandwidth and spotify has some kind of smart scaling, but now I have noticed it even while connected to university network. Just thought that you might wan't to know about this kind of problems.
I haven't noticed same kind of problem on my mac but at least two laptops with newest ubuntu and using alsa have done this.

Inappropriate?Same problem with Suse 11. Actually, I think that quality does not vary. It is consistently poor. I've never experienced such problems Spotify on XP or Vista.

Inappropriate?Ooops! Sorry guys. I should have looked in a bit more detail before writing my former reply. I managed to get the sound quality crystal clear by just following the instructions in:
http://www.spotify.com/en/help/faq/wine/
In my case, I wasn't using the right hardware acceleration.
Now I am very happy!!!
$ winecfg
Go to the Audio tab in the program and click on Test Sound. If you hear something, then you are all set, if an error message appears you have to configure it. Make sure the ALSA checkbox is checked and press OK and restart winecfg (it needs to re-initialize sound drivers) and click on Test Sound again. When you hear something you can continue. If you can’t get sound to work, it is unlikely you will hear anything in Spotify.
In the DirectSound frame at the bottom enter the following for best sound.
Hardware Acceleration: Emulation
Default Sample Rate: 44100
Default Bits Per Sample: 16
Driver Emulation: unchecked
