volume
hi, just wanted to tell you that the volume level in spotify is quite low, even at max settings (in both spotify and windows), This is kind of disturbing when you use a larger set of headphones. Just for good measure i compared the sound levels of winamp with the same headphones and with maxed volume settings in winamp it was so loud i could barely stand it.
Understand that this might be a minor issue but i would really like to be able to play spotify a bit louder.
thanks for a otherwise great program!

Inappropriate? This has been discussed before: http://getsatisfaction.com/spotify/to...
Also, to get good volume out of your headphones, make sure you have a decent amplifier. -
Inappropriate?Spotify has a very low volume level compared to other audio programs on our computers, this is a fact and has nothing to do with this or that amplifiers.
And no, this is not a "minor issue" for an AUDIO program and should be fixed ASAP!!!!
By the way: Compared to the very low music volume level the ads volume level is much much higher...very annoying and should be fixed asap too!!!
I’m very frustrated about that
-
I agree that Spotify has a low volume compared to many other applications, and this is due to the normalization that is done (as discussed in the thread I linked to above as you know). However, if you use a decent amplifier, then the output-level of Spotify is not a problem for getting good volume in a pair of headphones (the level compared to other services on the computer is another issue though).
Volume-level in ads is always a tricky business since the people paying the bills generally want them to have a high volume. Personally I haven't noticed a significant difference, but I do agree that Spotify should work to keep the difference minimal. -
I don't need a "decent amplifier" if all other audio programs on my computer have very good volume level but only Spotify has not! So it's not to all the users to change something on all their computers to work around this issue, it's Spotify who has to fix it soon, isn't it? -
Sure, I see what you mean. This is why the user-choice for turning off normalization would be good to have so that everyone can use Spotify as they would like. Personally, I prefer lower volume from Spotify to have good quality with normalized sound, and I also don't like to depend on the (generally bad) amplification in computer soundcards. -
Inappropriate? If you want to get the best possible quality from your soundcard, you need to feed the DA-converter with a unity gain signal (full level) since you don’t use all the bits if you lower the level in the digital domain. If the level from Spotify is at -12dB, you’ll end up listening to music with 14 bits resolution instead of 16 bits and this means higher noise and THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) levels. A user option to turn it off is the only way to go and it should be a simple thing to add so I really don’t understand why no one is responding to our request. I’ve recommended Spotify to a lot of people and many of them has had complaints about the quality but it’s always the level difference compared to other players that makes them think that the quality of Spotify is bad.
Spotify team:
Pleas add a tick box for “Equal loudness playback” that can be unchecked! -
Inappropriate? My hearing is imparied and I simply conclude Spotify won't function for me until the volume gets better.
I'm doing just fine when listening to webbased radio and various applications on most computers, but Spotify is unfortunately too weak. -
Inappropriate?Maybe this issue will remain unsolved since there may be a conflict in interests:

Inappropriate? Please please please Spotify, please provide an option to disable the normalization.
As others have noted, normalization based on the RMS of a wide range of sources will basically lower the number of bits used for the tracks with an over average RMS, which will in turn increase the noise floor when people adjust their amplifiers to compensate (not to mention all the people who are maxing their sound card amplifiers already and don't have that option).
If it's punch and power for your advertisements you want, just compress/limit the hell out of them and I can assure you they will cut through the music -- radio stations are doing this every day (and they usually compress the whole stream, including the music, so you would even have and advantage here since you, hopefully, don't compress our precious audio material).
As for paying users the advertisement argument is effectivly moot, so there I see absolutely no reason not to provide that check-box, unless you actually did destructively process the audio files.
Please consider these arguments, and if you have the time comment on them that would be an added bonus :)
Thanks!
I’m sad

Inappropriate? Not only do you have the same idea I hade regarding a nice, easy to understand explanation to include in the app but you actually made it!!!
My hat goes of for you!
The only small detail I would change is the part “some are raised” since this is not the case (peaks would clip since they are at 0 dBDF (or very close to 0) even in the RMS-level is low.
So, Spotify: This is how you do it... PLEASE! -
