Was the Spotify beta version really built with regional restrictions in mind?
Was the Spotify beta version really built with regional restrictions in mind?
I only ask as, since the introduction of regional restrictions last week, several flaws in the current design of the Spotify client have become apparent.
1) Playlists are not really shareable between countries anymore as there is no gaurantee that any of the tracks will be playable in the other country. Or, the tracks might be playable in the other country but not from the shared playlist, only by searching.
2) The Top lists are broken and now appear to contain tracks that are not playable, while in most cases the tracks are playable but not from the Top List, only by searching (same problem as shared playlists)
3) The Overview page is often completely blank if you search for an artist where you no longer have access to any of their tracks due to regional restrictions.
4) Some of the playlists that you have published yourself on the Spotify blog now contain tracks that cannot be played (I can't believe this was the original intention).
All of this leads me to believe that the Spotify client was not designed with regional restrictions in mind and that you must have been hoping to resolve this issue with the record labels in some other way. This obviously failed and resulted in the cull of tracks and the impostion of regional restrictions last week.
Am I right?
P.S. I'm not really expecting a completely truthful answer. I expect that you will be very diplomatic in any answer you give (if you give one at all) so that you don't annoy the record labels too much.

Inappropriate? We knew that regional restrictions we an issue and there were a few tracks from day 1 that were restricted but you're correct that there have been some unexpected results that have cropped up once everything was in place.

Inappropriate?Thanks for the frank response.
Another problem which I also think is related to regional restrictions is that on the home page many artists shown in the "Artists you may like" recommendations list have no playable tracks. It's nice that you try and recommend other artists based on past tastes, but completely useless if we can't play any tracks by the recommended artists.
I’m wishing the record labels would get their act together and get rid of regional restrictions on the internet

Inappropriate? At least with this overview thing we knew that it's down to restriction like the Juno soundtrack the fact that there's a page for Ellen Page and Michael Cera with nothing on it means that some countries have it.

Inappropriate?I really do hope this whole restriction mess will get solved in a way that will benefit us users, and thereby also the very same label companies that imposes them.
In the digital age, it is really a very strange way of censoring music.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?I agree with Xenius - it is so frustrating. and it's becoming more and more difficult to stay a lawabiding citizen. why does the music industry hate it's customers? why doesn't it support legal services like spotify? I don't get it.

Inappropriate? As soon as these restrictions end illegal downloading will decrease rapidly

Inappropriate?I am Swedish, but I was happy to see that France is amongst the countries that have Spotify because I like to listen to French music at times, But no, I coould not listen to the French artists on the French top list. Why I can see it at all is a mystery, because it is of no use to me.
Then I tried to listen to some artists on the British top list. Guess what? Not available there either.
I can understand why some artists might not want to have their music here, but I cannot understand why an artist that is on Spotify would not want me (in another country) to hear their music. That makes no sense whatsoever.
If there are going to be restrictions I am sorry to say that I will not stay here for long.
I’m confused
