Hi backlyn,
Good thinking about an iPhone client for Spotify. That device is a great platform for music applications, and with the 3G version you can actually create some interesting streaming services.
We are considering all sorts of new features for Spotify, including what devices and gadgets we can bring Spotify to. For strategic reasons we cannot however go into specifics. Sorry about this, but trust me that we are working hard towards some interesting things.
Keep rocking,
-Göran

Inappropriate?Don't go iPhone, go uPnP/DLNA. think big! ;) with uPnP renderer/server/controlpoint support more devices can be used. All Nokia Symbian S60 allready have built in uPnP control point support.
I’m tired of iWhateverAppliance
-
foffen: They are looking for a Symbiandeveloper, maybe you could apply for the position and help bring us a mobile client?! :D -
Inappropriate? An Iphone app would be great as long as it does not occupy the "phone line" as Simplifye Media does. When I use SM nobody can call me.
-
Ehhrmm? You have an iPhone 1st generation? Then it doesn't matter what app you use to stream.
I have no probs receiving calls using SM or Orb Live (except that the music disappears during the call ;p) -
Inappropriate?Would be incredibly great with an iPhone app! Really hoping that it will be available at the app store someday.
-
Inappropriate?Either a "simple" solution as iRemote but for Spotify would be great. Allowing you to control Spotify on your computer from your iPhone app.
Or, of course, even better would be music on the go. With that, I wouldn't need anything besides Spotify; let alone music installed on my hard drive or iPhone :)
I’m looking forward to what solutions for the iPhone that could emerge
-
Inappropriate?I would love an iPhone app. It would be like the Last.fm iPhone app, but on crack. Spotify's desktop client kicks Last.fm's ass in terms of actually listening to music; and that on the iPhone would be perfect.
Thanks for such a great service, I'm so happy to be onboard for the ride and to see where you guys take Spotify.
I’m confident and excited
-
Inappropriate?Android version would be cool to
i dont have a Android phone but it would be cool if there is a spotify version for it
http://code.google.com/android/
Spotify + WLAN Enabled Phone = Should be a sweet combo
I’m happy
-
I HAVE an Android phone and i think it would be very cool to have a Spotify app for it :D -
Inappropriate?A Blackberry version would be amazing too, especially since it's a major player in businesses. Imagine the potential user base there.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?WLAN enabled phones are perfect for steaming music without the annoying high cost per transfer on 3G/EDGE/GSM :P
I’m silly
-
Inappropriate?I'd just like to show my support for this idea. I'd happily pay premium if it meant I could have that feature.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?And don't forget the Android T-Mobile G1!
-
Inappropriate?Regular j2me would reach the most people. There are already other streaming clients for this platform, so it can easily be done. It seems lately, the proprietary iPhone platform has been favoured above the almost ubiquitous MIDP platforms on other phones.
-
Inappropriate? An iPhone/iPod client would be great when on the move, and something Apples "Remote App" would be great at home. This would allow me to use spotify without having to turn on my video projector to get a user interface (media pc without seperate monitor). I find myself using spotify less then I'd like to, turning to iTunes and Remote App instead.
I'd consider upgrading to Premium for this feature and higher bitrates.
Apart from that, thumbs up for a great service.
I’m waiting
-
Inappropriate?Spotify on my iTouch would be cool. At the moment I use an app to stream all my music off my PC wirelessly to my Sony Gigajuke.
-
Inappropriate?simply making spotify a webapp would reach pretty much any device with internet connectivity, depending on the development technology
I’m hopeful
-
Yeah, but it'd need RTSP support for Java phones. -
afaik there are no webapp technologies that would allow an iPhone to stream music from it, so this has nothing to do with this specific topic... -
-
Inappropriate? What's going on with the iPhone app?
Will be be released soon?
Will it be available in the Apple AppStore?
Can't wait to get it, but I don't want to jailbreak my phone to get it :X
I’m EXTREMELY EXCITED
-
Inappropriate? As you may already now there is a Spotify-client availible for the iPhone since about a week ago.
It has basic functionality only for now (playlists don't work that well), its in early BETA so it crashes sometimes and you cant use rewind/fast forward.
-You do have to jailbreak your device (but everyone does that, right??? That's no danger! :-)
-You must have a Spotify Premium Account (not DayPass)
1. The App is called "Spot" and is availible for free in Cydia
2. Install "Backgrounder" as well so you can lock your phone with the music still playing
Whenever someones calls you the music stops (and for now you have to manually restart it again).
This app was the reason for me to get Spotify Premium!!!
Been using it a lot over both Wifi and 3G and it works great!!!!
//Daniel
I’m happy
-
Daniel, how's the battery time using the Spotify app? -
Atleast several hours over 3G if you have good reception. -
The program you mentioned seems like a great idea, i have no arguments for not keeping my phone jailbroken. Thank you for raising awareness about "Spot" -
Can't see why. As long as the Phone in question is legally activated you'll still receive push notifications. -
Inappropriate? If apple are nice then the Spotify app is only a few days away
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology... -
Now that would be awesome!!! :-D
I really hope Apple will accept it, it seems a bit unlikely though.... -

Inappropriate?Whether or not Apple will approve of the application is an interesting topic, but one can safely assume that they will think hard about it, rendering us waiting longer than usual for the (dis/-)approval of the application.
I’m Confused
-
Inappropriate? One idea for the iphone app could be to add an option to use it as a remote for your computer. In this way you could control spotify as normal from your iphone but the sound comes from your computer.
-
Inappropriate?I made a group called "iPhone Appstore should definitely approve Spotify" on facebook. everyone can join and show your support for spotify.com :)
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?Apple is typical of this fiasco. I hope they see light and approve of the application.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate?Surely a Spotify application on the iPhone would mark the beginning of the end for the iPhone and Apple's income from music download sales?!
Bring it on... I neither own a iPhone or ever intend to own one.
Music has always been a shared experience; people love to share their music collections and discover new music from each other. iTunes will fail because Apple has failed to grasp the concept of sharing music. Spotify is fantastic, it has resurrected the innocence of the shared music experience in the digital age. Well done guys! -
Such an ignorant post, Scott.
This thread are for those Spotify-users that actually _do_ care about Spotify on iPhone. :-)
With that said, all the mayor record companies in Sweden are already getting more profit from Spotify than from iTunes.
It is likely that indeed iTunes will be beaten by Spotify or some similar service in the near future. -
Inappropriate?Opinions are important and ours are no exception. I think Apple has been complacent. Have they encouraged music sharing and a community? Felix Dennis commented that Apple's downfall will come due to their CEO's failure to encourage consumers to load their own MP3's onto Apple devices.
-
Inappropriate?Apple is in a really tight spot here, because they have two options:
1: Allow Spotify for iPhone: More poeple buying iPhone, but less people buying music from iTunes Store! Which is a really big loss from them.
2: Deny Spotify for iPhone: More poeple buying Android, same people or less people buying music from iTunes Store. Which is less a loss for them.
I say go for option one! Or invent a way to combine itunes + spotify!
I’m excited
-
Option 3: Delay the deny of Spotify for iPhone and then add a similar function for iTunes Store, release the function and then deny Spotify. I believe in option 3 -
option 3b; and risk a law suite a' la Microsoft IE case -
Inappropriate?Anyone know how long could be expect to wait until we hear if or if not Apple will approve it for AppStore?
-
Well I'd say in the next few days, today apple seemed to have removed spotify tags from three apps which were on the store. This is either to make way for just the spotify app to appear when you search for spotify, or to remove anything to do with them.. perhaps because they may launch their own streaming service at their next iPod event (Sept 9th).. either way we can only speculate. -
Yes, I noticed they removed the tags too. I can't wait to find out if it is approved or not! -
I'll be really disappointed with Apple if they don't approve it. The idea of the App Store was to keep out malicious software, not innovative, potentially competitive software.
Personally, I think they will approve it, the backlash from the Google Talk rejection isn't something Apple will want to go through again. -
Apple say in their App Store policy that anything deemed as potentially competitive with any of Apple's products or services will not be allowed on the App Store.
But I thought there was a law regarding anti-competition that made this illegal? Supermarkets get sued for anti-competition all the time. -
not really, since Apple would be the host of the competitive application. I imagine anti-competition only really applies externally. If apple were to reject or ban Spotify or other competitive apps remotely, i.e. external to the iphone or app store, then that would indeed be anti-competitive and illegal. but since they are storing and hosting and, in part, advertising such a thing as Spotify or similar, they are probably well within their legal rights to reject it for whatever reasons they have. -
Inappropriate?Looks like Apple approved it!
This is according to Paid Content:
Apple’s Cupertino spokesperson tells us: “The current status as of right now is it’s been approved and we hope to add the app to the more than 65,000 apps on the app store very soon. We’ve been in constant communication working with the developer and have already notified Spotify that the app will be in the app store very soon.”

If accurate, this is absolutely fantastic news! -
Yes yes yes yes! -
Yippee ;) love this news, hope that it's true! -
It's not on the App Store yet, I'm repeatedly hitting the refresh button! :-) -
Whoo hoo! Now it's on the BBC it must be true! *Almost screams in excitement* :-D -
Inappropriate?Connor: why wouldn't it be true because *I* reported it first? ;-)
-
I didn't mean that, what I meant was now that two credible sources are reporting it, it isn't just a rumour. :-) -
Inappropriate?Daniel Ek on his twitter: "Yes, I can confirm that Apple has approved the app. We're happy but have had a great dialogue with Apple all the way. They've been great!"
I’m happy and excited
-
It's not available in the App Store yet. -
Apple said that Spotify will be on the App Store very soon, which judging from the time it took to approve Spotify is about a year from now. ;-P -

Is there any official comment on if or when the app will be available in other countries (Switzerland in my case). An why have some countries been excluded in the first place? -
@Lachned: You do know that Spotify is currently not available in Switzerland? See http://www.spotify.com/en/help/faq/#c.... for the list of countries where Spotify is available.
I'm guessing that the app is only available in the AppStores for the countries where Spotify is officially available. -
Inappropriate?Hmm...I didn't know that. I had no problem whatsoever to create a premium account from switzerland.
I hope more countries get added officially (mostly switzerland of course :) )
I’m dissapointed but hopeful
-
Inappropriate?I've been using Spotify for iPhone and it rules especially with the Backgrounder app (From Cydia and allows you to run apps in the backgrounder)
Spotify Premium (worth it) + Spotify Mobile + Backgrounder (From Cydia) = Better then the iPod app
