Why do songs disapear.
Why do some songs become removed? Frustrating when you already created a playlist and a song just disapears. Sand when you paid for the service.

Why are songs disappearing in Spotify?
We have recently moved to a public beta this means that we are now updating our music catalog with more music from the record companies. However, this also means in the short term you may experience some inconsistencies as we prune the catalogue, make improvements, replacements and continuously add songs in order to create the widest and deepest music catalogue.
We are sorry for any frustration this causes but please bear with us since we are now adding around 10 000 songs per day so we hope that you will be able to find all your favorites and some new ones again soon.

Inappropriate?I would like to know this too. Yesterday I payed for the premium service only to realize today that all of metallicas songs are removed from the library. WADDA FUCK!?
Money back pleeeez
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, this sucks.
-
Inappropriate?Yeah, very annoying. It seems to happen to Metallica very often. Could this be a new Napster scandal?
I’m dissapointed
-
Inappropriate?I will probably cancel my premium account until theres is an awnser for this issue.
-
Inappropriate? Was really disapointed when I found out about this. I thought you were supposed to add 10k new songs every day, not remove songs. Especially the vital ones you have, like Metallica.
And this without saying anything about why, which is even more bad.
Are we supposed to expect this in the future? That our playlists and favorites just dissappeares song by song?
I too will cancel my premium account if this is something that will more in the future.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have already cancelled my premium subscription, let's hope they make some improvements now!

This doesn't really explain why an album not was there for about a week, then appearing and getting added to playlists, just to dissappear about a week later. Seems odd.. -
"we are now adding around 10 000 songs per day"
That's simply not true: On 2008-10-11 there were 1.760.146 tracks available here in Germany and today on 2008-11-8 there are 1.919.877 tracks available here.
A simple calculation just makes round about 6.000 added tracks per day! Where are the other 4.000 tracks per day? -
They are also removing songs all the time (bootlegs, bad versions, wrong versions), which mean that they sure can add 10.000 tracks per day and still only get a 6.000 tracks per day average.
With customers like Andreas around there will always be something to nag about... This time he was wrong, though. -
I'm no customer in a few days anymore! Perhaps i will come back when Spotify is out of beta with the promised huge music catalogue and good sound quality. Wish you all the best! Bye... -
Inappropriate? This means that Metallica is not gone, just "lost" for the time being?
I can live them (and others) dissapperaing (it is a beat product after all), but I feared that you somehow were losing artist permanently due to licencing issues or something like that.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate? Please Spotify, you have a good service. Don't wreck this by lying and spinning the answers. How can the fact that Metallica keeps disappearing possibly be explained by "we are now updating our music catalog with more music from the record companies"?
It's not a difficult question. Where did Metallica go? Are they coming back? Could we please have a straight answer?
Edit: I realize it's a question about licensing, but please use this channel to your consumers to tell us what's going on. It's a bit frustrating to see your favorite music disappear and come back several times a month.
-
Inappropriate?Sorry for keeping you waiting, finally got the answer regarding Metallica.
Spotify would welcome the addition of Metallica in our catalogue. However, the artist decided that they did not want to be included and therefore we are obligated to respected that decision. -
Ha ha, do you use text modules in the meantime for these ever the same answers??? -
Inappropriate?Excellent work! Now that the problem has been identified, we (Spotify and fans) can work together to make them change that decision. Perhaps not today, but in a near future when the user base is larger than the talented Mr Ulrich's ego.
-
Exactly... Fans unite and let them know how much this sucks.. -
Inappropriate?Again, many tracks disappeared from Spotify here in Germany!
On 2008-11-07 we have reached the mark of 1.919.877 tracks and today (2008-11-12) we have fallen back to 1.893.518 tracks only.
That's really annoying...
I’m disappointed

Inappropriate? Now, all of swedish band Kent's albums are gone, with just a few stray songs from collect albums remaining... So, are major artists fleeing the service? If so, bye bye subscriptions, and I would like to argue, ad revenue and listeners.
I’m frustrated

see the change log -
(Swedish) Kent is present in my Spotify. Mixed between some French Kent band, but still. -
I currently get 17 songs from swedish Kent, 13 from "Absolute Music" series of mixcd's, and the rest from a single called Columbus, the rest are french. 0 albums. Quite a change from what it was, when all the Kent records were available. Might be a glitch, I dunno. -
The albums "Tillbaka till samtiden" (2007), "Du & jag döden" (2005), "Vapen & Ammunition" (2002), "Hagnesta Hill" (1999) (w/bonus), "Isola" (1997) (w/bonus), "Verkligen" (1996), "Kent" (1995). The single "Den döda vinkeln" (2005) and the EP "The Hjärta & Smärta EP" (2005).
I'm a premium member, though. And from Norway too.
What happens when you open this:
http://open.spotify.com/album/2bHdFjK... -
"This album is currently not available in Sweden" -
Yeah, exactly, "This album is currently not available in Sweden". Also premium, I'd not bother otherwise. -
Inappropriate?Hi Riddartomte,
We're looking into why some users can listen to Kent and other like yourself cannot.

Andres

Hi Andres,
Have you found something out about "the Kent situation" yet? -
Inappropriate?I just saw that all the albums the danish band Mew's albums, except one (Frengers) dissappeared. You used to have all of them (including bonus songs that weren't on the European realeases).
That's not good:(
I’m sad
-
All Mew albums are present on my spotify (if they haven't released more than "and the glass handed kites" and "frengers" + a single called "She came home for christmas") -
Inappropriate?Ouch. I really do miss all the Kent albums!
I hope things like these will be sorted out as soon as possible. It's a shame that some artists opt not to be included in Spotify (boooo! shame on you!) but it is worse when some albums and artists dissappear for "unknown" reasons.
I’m frustrated
-
Just noticed that two Kent albums were added today! Great. -
Yes, they added many tracks today! :-) What a pitty that we can not see WHAT ELSE was added to the music catalogue... :-( -
Yes, but do a search for some of your missing artists and you'll see that a few of them have been added! :-) -
Ah, yeah. Nice to see the return of at least two of Kent's albums. I *DO* understand things like this are bound to happen as the database is undergoing constant changes. But still, frustrating to say the least. But I guess we all got a little spoilt by how great Spotify is working that it's easy to forget that the service is still in beta. ;) I still feel pretty confident that as soon as the big changes to the BACK catalogue settles things will improve a lot! ;) -
Ok, now we know a little bit more about the added content: http://www.spotify.com/blog/archives/... -
Inappropriate? However, there's a lesson in here to be learnt by spotify. Fair or not, it's a psychological fact that the negative feeling of loss if you have something and it's taken from you, is stronger than the positive feeling of ownership or accessibility that you have if it's there from the beginning.
Which means don't make music accessible until it's verified that you can keep it in the database. -
Inappropriate?Does this mean that KMFDM and Velvet Underground albums that disapeared yesterday are likely to be gone for good? Or are they likely to come back at some point?
-
Inappropriate?OMFG, some people have to complain about everything. Here you get a wonderful program, with an excellent database, for a very cheap price. Dont you guys understand that some companies denies having their music on Spotify? Thats their decision, nothing more to do about it.
Stop complaining about missing songs, come with something constructive instead!! -
You are blaming us for not being constructive?
Well then, what is not constructive about asking questions (complaining even) about the database of a service, the very database the service relies on?
It's not that the service lacks music, it is just that music keeps dissappearing from the database without any notice.
And, as Raz pointed out, it is a well known psycological fact that people feel more discomfort when we lose something, than we feel comfort when gaining something. -
Trond Kjetil: Its not constructive at all when lots of people is only posting their frustration about some disappeared songs. Its Ok when 1 guy asks "why is this album missing, but when many people starts complaining about the same thing, i would call such stuff for SPAM.. "Oh it sucks, im gonna cancel this account", thats a great example of what i mean..
Btw, im not blaming you all ;) -
Lets say you test drive a car, and it works like a charm and you like where you can drive with it. You decide to lease that car. One day, you're not permitted to drive on the streets you could drive on while testing the car, and you need to drive on those streets every day. Would you accept this, or would you return the car?
I like Spotify, but since some of the artists I frequently listen to vanished shortly after I entered the premium subscription, I decided to cancel it and use the free version instead.
And also, if no one complains about artists not being on Spotify, how can we make the artists aware of us wanting to have them there? -
ph0x is right. Remember, people are worried. We started using an excelleint service with lots and lots of music, and the promise of an evergrowing library. Bliss.
Suddenliy, tracks started dissappearing, whole albums vanishing. No real answer from Spotify (you are getting better at it though). What if every mainstream artist just disappears one at a time? Because that is what it looks like to us. Albums, whole discographies I listened to when I first started using isn't available anymore.
It is scary, without a reliable database, I do not know what I'm paying for anymore.
And people have a need to vent out their feelings,. Just like you did, when you calling every one elses whining spam;P
That's what customer support is for:)
Whining, complaining, spam, whatever you like to call it, we need it. I believe every comment is useful, it is democratizing.
Please don't ask people to shut up and eat their food. We are grown-ups now. We are allowed to be picky;) -
Let's try and keep the tone here civil, no need to be so serious. :)
We certainly don't like removing music but as we've said previously this is going to happen from time to time as we are still in public beta, on the whole though a lot more music is being added than removed.
This forum is here to allow people to openly express their feelings for Spotify, let's try it keep it friendly. -
Thanks for replying... but, what are the chances that the albums I am missing will be added again? (when beta is over?) -
Inappropriate? If you ask me Metallic is just a bunch of crap heads. I'm glad I never did pay for their music. I wonder what their problem is? This is after all a paid service which means that they will get payed.
Also i noticed that my Tiesto songs were gone. Now I've found some other song from him, but not the same songs (not the good ones). Where are they? -
I agree with you 100% especially in these days when Sweden is debating the European Union IPRED directive and artists are complaining about filesharing and not getting payed. Now Spotify try to bring them into what may very well be the future for music and they chose not to participate. I say screw them, there are lots of other good artists out there that are ready to embrace the future! -
Inappropriate?I justed noticed that one of my absolute favourite bands are gone - totally gone - Dave Matthews Band - I fully understand the metallica issue since the have allways been kinda negative towards new ways of distributing their music but DMB?? Are they coming back?
I’m pissed off
-
I noticed too that they deleted round about 30.000 tracks again! :-( I hope that this will stop someday and that the number of tracks is increasing only from this day on...! -
Inappropriate?Only a few days ago all of Wolf Parade's tracks appeared to be there and I listened to a few from their album "At Mount Zoomer". Today I've checked and all but one of their tracks has disappeared.
I’m disappointed
-
Steven, it seems all records from the Sub Pop label have been removed. Let's hope they get back later on! (And to be fair, lots and lots of new albums were added yesterday as well. We have to be patient.) -
Inappropriate?I've noticed that many artists have just a few albums for example machinae supremacy. What i don't get is why Sportify don't have all machinae supremacys songs. Almost all of their songs is downloadable for free so i don't understand why spotify doesn't have their albums.
I’m confused
-
+1 -
Inappropriate?Metallica was playable yesterday, but now it's not. AGAIN. What's the problem? :S
-
Inappropriate?I think Spotify really needs to communicate more about why songs are disappearing. If you had contracts with musicians why are all of them broken on masse? I really don't believe that as much as 30 000 songs disappeared because bands like Metallica doesn't want to be on Spotify. There are other reasons, right? Its quite a bit of content that have disappeared over the last month, and I am really starting to doubting the service. Do you need to create an extra level of premium to cover the cost of the music that is disappearing because it cost too much? Well, then, just add that.
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Again, many many tracks disappeared from Spotify here in Germany!
On 2008-12-01 we have reached the mark of 2.029.662 tracks and today (2008-12-10) we have fallen back to 1.878.477 tracks only.
That's a loss of 151.185 tracks!!!
I’m more than disappointed now
-
In Sweden we are more lucky. ;-) -
Inappropriate? Please put back the original Metallica titles. Is there a problem with the record company or what...? We'll never forget the Napster shit with Metallica.
I’m frustrated
-
Check the FAQ - The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, AC/DC and Metallica have decided to not participate in Spotify. -
Inappropriate?I understand the frustration, and I'm definitelty worried when albums I love disappear (and if I was a premium user, I'd probably be more annoyed).
BUT: I do prefer that the spotify team is working on the software/catalog rather than using their resources on updating us every time a change in the catalog happens. While this is in Beta, all of us has to expect and to some extent accept errors and changes in the catalog, and one of the things (in my opinion) we can do to make this an even better service than it is, is to confront the labels/artists that are still not here/ disappearing and to spread a positive word about the service. The more people using spotify and the more buzz it creates, the more interesting it will be to join the service for labels and artists. That's MY opinion...
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?I'm also curious as to why this happened to a song that I can get through myspace or lala, which is pretty popular.
I’m upset
-
I should have mentioned, the official post isn't very clear on why songs would be removed; it was only clear on why it may take a while for them to be added.
