Contacts - Select All/Group Select
In the contacts area there should be the ability to 'select all' or 'group select' when attempting to erase all/some contacts.

You're exactly right there should be a 'select all' option.
We discussed this a while back are were hoping to put a 'select all' facility on all the list pages - sms, contacts, photos, call history, to make it easier to perform batch deletes etc. 'Select All' would select all visible rows.
