Spymaster: Cheat or Stealth?
Timemaychangeme aka lolwhatyousuck, etc. is attacking, then signing off. Per his tweets, "The trick is that you log out of spymaster, change your twitter username, log in to spymaster, change username back to original." Then he tweets, "Every time you attack someone you can just do the trick again, change name to something else, and they can't hit back :)." Is this acceptable gameplay or is it cheating?

Inappropriate?EEEK. Not good. Alright, thanks for letting us know about his.

Here are 2 more... NacMacPuma and mk422 , along with 4 others killed me and then changed names... Not the first time either,,, Can't possibly be Spymaster legal. Defeats good gameplay... Quickly becoming not worth playing guys. -
They recently changed their clan affiliation and showing support for that they changed their names. Furthermore, it's still not illegal to change your twitter screen name like they did. Sorry for the confusion!! =( -
Right after killing me??? I mean 1 minute afterwards, they changed clans. And I guess fix the game so that when I return fire it doesn't ask me to send them an invite instead of attacking them. Sounds broken my friend... Okay not illegal, but BROKE! -
Oh and an update... They attacked me again using the old name and I can't attack back... Poof they're gone! You're right... It's just a game... I quit! I play for fun and this isn't fun when it has holes in it. -
No need to reply... I'm on and up out! -
I think you're a little confused, they just recently changed today to support their new clan. The "return fire" is because they haven't been updated in our system yet. Sadly this is a problem with both SM and Twitter, as it takes a bit for the system to re-align with the name change, and this hardly ever happens. Very unfortunate that one little action such as this results in your leaving. -
I understood what you were saying... Let me put it in different words and maybe it will make sense. Throughout all of this twitter name stayed the same... (even tweeted from it 30 minutes ago) Anyways, 3 hours ago, I was attacked... The name changed and then attacked again with the original name and then poof... gone again? Is that type of peekaboo legal? I guess that was my question. Sorry for the confusion. -
ah i see, that might be some confusion in our system figuring out which person they are (not to say we dont know, but the display is off) What was the time difference between these attacks? -
About an hour, 15 minutes... between. Also, I didn't see their twitter names changes and there are tweets 45 minutes old from these accounts... Oh and I'm not trying to get anyone banned, but if there is a "hole", no offense, it would be better to fix it than to call it a spying feature, or clan reorganization. Hope this helps... -
As you know, this has been a problem for me. I gave up on it, but it's happening with other spymasters who attack, then change their screen names so they can't be retaliated against. If anyhting, more players are figuring this out and since it's never been defined as cheating, as attacking and not allowing the attacked player to participate in fair game play, more spymasters are doing it with impunity.,
If the developers don't close this loophole and reinforce the three strikes you lose rule, more players will leave this game and you will lose the followers and money that could have come with them. -
The only way i know of closing this loopwhole is to allow twitter to have us make a lot more API calls so we can constantly check to see if your name has change, or some sort of session cookie that would force you to login, but again that would require another API call. Furthermore, I assure you I will look into this and ask the other engineers as well -
Thank you. I appreciate your honesty. I realize that some things may be beyond the scope of the game developers to fix. I know this may be one of those things. Seeing Disabled Biz's comments renewed my frustration about this. Thanks for responding. -
Inappropriate?By the way, he also tweets that the Directorate says this is not cheating but good gameplay.
If that's true, I may have just lost interest in this game.
I’m frustrated
-
no, it's cheating in my opinion. -
Inappropriate? There's no official stance on that. We're working on a workaround and future changes my fix this. In my opinion...it's kind of being stealthy.
-
Inappropriate?I hope you find a workaround because it is clever but it circumvents the intent of the game. One of the risks of the game is that when you attack someone, that person can attack you back.
I think that most people realize this is a game and want to have fun. It stops being fun when someone does this and then throws it in the game designers' faces. His tweets are meant to humiliate them, to "keep the staff on their toes".
I've got no problem with the risks of the game, the clans etc. The only reason I'm writing about it is because I want to keep enjoying it, win or lose. -
Inappropriate?Lock-in the twitter username they sign-up with. That would be good.

Inappropriate?I have to agree with brntbeer...it's being stealthy and conniving but it's part of the spy game. You can't lock-in one's username, it's their privilege to change it or retain it. My stand on the matter is just keep enjoying the game until you're tired of it. Good time man.
I’m confident
-
Inappropriate? This goes beyond changing names or clan alliances. They're gaming the system by striking then disappearing and reappearing as someone else. They're able to strike as many times as they like. The three strike loss of the element of surprise no longer applies to them. That's a rule for a reason. So is the idea that when you attack someone there is the chance that person will try to retaliate. The percentages in the game account for this and keep it interesting. The person who strikes then changes screen name momentarily to thwart revenge is introducing something akin to teleportation to the game. Since this is espionage and not sci-fi, I would think this would fall well outside the parameters of this game.
If you cannot control it or insist on calling it stealthy game play or just the accidental consequence of changing names, which by the way, you say is verboten, then the Directorate has lost control of this game. These cheaters will destroy the profit model on which you have built this game. They will rob iList of the success of its creation.
I can't fight this kind of cheating. Kathcom will remain in stasis unless and until you work this out.
I’m still unhappy.

Inappropriate?this should be a non-issue if you use profile links and stop using copy-paste. screen names may change, and twitter is not likely to change or audit this functionality. fortunately for you, you can navigate to your aggressor's profile and click the nice big assassinate user button we provide for you.

I appreciate the upgrades that make it so easy to access an aggressor's profile. They are excellent. I only use copy-paste to make sure I'm not about to hit someone with friendly fire. Some of the aggressors listed under intelligence activity don't make it into my Twitter updates DM'ed from the directorate in addition to not showing up on Twitter's people finder. Is their game play making you unable to report to players who has hit them? Should you delete that notification option entirely, since you can't fix it? -
Inappropriate? That's good advice but it only works if the cheater is not picking on players that are too weak to fight back. Of course, that's exactly what they do, for experience points, to wipe someone out, just for kicks.
I was able to track down someone doing this before. But I gave up because knowing doesn't help. If this is something the Directorate can't fix, then fine. Just say that. But don't pretend it's good gameplay.
The gamers who bully players with this loophole are not doing you any favors. Perhaps when gamers complain to you about them, you could do something about it, sanction them or post their multiple names in the blog. If your response is "oh well, it's an opportunity for you to play detective" that's okay, too. But it's b.s., in my opinion.
Maybe there will be players who never figure out that this is how they're getting bombarded by hits. They may quit without explanation. But the people who take the time to write to you about this are frustrated and asking for help. Please just be honest: is there no help you can provide?
-
Kath, i suggest you become part of a Clan, and work together with them to stop people from bullying you since you cannot retaliate. This also means that you have to become strong enough to offer some help of your own =) -
Inappropriate?I was/am part of a clan and did get help but once I went elite I was really of no use to anyone. I couldn't offer help any longer.
I enjoyed being part of a clan. It made the game much more fun. It encouraged camaraderie even with opposing clan members. Clans are the best way to control people using this crappy tactic but only if you have a powerful clan that can strike and win. It's not much use to the little guy.
By the way, I've been meaning to ask, is the relative strength of each spymaster in your ring factored into your assassination attempts of just the # of masters?
