Unable to preform any tasks
I can't preform any tasks. I simply get redirected to the top of the page (the link leads to "#," the empty anchor.) I have JavaScript enabled, so that's not the problem.
Please fix this quick! Energy's a-wastin'!

The task changes have been executed to stop cheaters from using scripts.
Flash is now required to play Spymaster. If you are still having problems with the tasks system, please make sure you are running the latest version of Flash Player. Please also note that we will not actively support beta versions of browsers such as nightly builds of Firefox, Google Chrome, &c.

i'm not really sure what that is saying... care to explain in layman's terms? -
You could have written it in PHP or something I understand. What's that meant to do? How does it help with this problem? -
just explain in non-coding terms, how bout regular English... :) please and thank you. -
Erm, so that's a bunch of code. What's it mean? I've got the same problem. Firefox 3.0.8, Ubuntu Linux. Started about an hour ago. Before that I was happily performing tasks. -
Could do tasks up until about 1 hour ago. I've come back to my PC and I'm having the same problem as everybody else. Nothing has changed on my end -
this is really pissing me off that it still says, "The company believes this isn't a problem."
It's obviously a problem, so please change the status or simply fix it. -
Eston, please see the screenshot I just posted showing the tasks.js 404 error. -
huh, what am I supposed to do with that? Must I clear something in the browser? -
Duh guys, he's replying because elliot was the one who WROTE that script... hence ELLIOT has either been blocked of they've patched whatever was allowing him to automate his energy usage.. just look at the right hand side of the linked page. -
Hah, yep. I @replied one of the devs with the script. I am pretty much done with Spymaster; I just thought it'd be nice of me to show them the psuedo-vulnerability I was exploiting when I left.
I didn't expect anybody to be so stupid as to solve the problem with Flash, though. I'm really wishing I hadn't shown them the script, now they've screwed over honest users who, like myself (not to claim I'm an honest user, more an honest (ab)user!), are unable or unwilling to use Flash Player. -
@elliottcable I don't see why ya can't just block the flash file.. my noscript plugin picked it up straight away and blocked it until I explicitly allowed it. -
@Andrew, that doesn't allow me to preform tasks, heh. On OS X side, I run ClickToFlash in Safari 4, and have Spymaster whitelisted. But I literally cannot install Flash on my Arch side (well, I can, but it's a beta, and I really CBF - most of what I'd install it to use, specifically Grooveshark, would be useless anyway - no OSSv4 support for my laptop, Macbook Air) -
Inappropriate?you know what really upsets me about this: the fact that I already have to wait 5 minutes for my energy to refresh and I did that so I'd have ample energy to perform these tasks, and now my time was wasted and I can't earn points/increase levels.
btw, the sequence goes like this: Click Perform Task, it's seen as go to # on this page, and the link changes from playspymaster.com/tasks to playspymaster.com/tasks#
I’m frustrated

and just wondering, how the hell does "the company believe this isn't a problem" when by nature... it is. -

Inappropriate? This is not a script for you to install. This is a patch or the bug of a developer of game. You must wait for the game developers to fix it.
-
I don't think what he posted is a patch. Read the comments that are running through the script and its description: "Description: Automates the boring bit of Spymaster." and a later comment, "# Now let's repeatedly run the most powerful task available."
Those two points alone make me think that it's a script, and that it required rubygems and mechanize, which are both Ruby applications... or at least something written in ruby to execute this piece.
And anyway, why would he allow /us/ to download a patch, which /they/ are supposed to use to fix the game? -
OK, i did read the script and that's sounds possible.Anyway, I don't know how to install and moreover run Ruby scripts. -
@Milhouse Same :P -
Hrm? You callin' me a Ruby noob, fool? I may just have to take you down ... what's your Twitter/Spymaster name, eh? d-; -
Inappropriate?I'm running into this problem in Safari, Firefox on a iMac... I'm assassinating people while I wait. will test this on SeaMOnkey and Camino in a tic.
-
Inappropriate? This is a problem, how can you say it is not ? We cannot perform any tasks !
-
Inappropriate? Can't perform any tasks when clicking on the links for any of the tasks. At this moment in time, the only thing I can do is assassinate people. @farhan
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate? My guess, and I think it's accurate, is that the script linked to by the FBS Director is an automation hack script thats made it into the wild. The Task page failures we are all seeing may be an attemp to quickly re-engineer the Task page to guard against such scripts, or even server overload from too many people running these scripts and generating too many connections.
I’m annoyed
-
I think that sounds like it is probably the cause of the task downage... -
Yeah, they re-wrote the interface to utilize Flash to attempt to block out scripts like mine above. Unfortunately, that screws over those of you without Flash. -
Inappropriate?I have the same error/problem. I can assassinate, but I can't do any tasks.
I’m frustrated
-
Thats Funny! -
Inappropriate? It doesn't matter what browser or OS you're on, the tasks.js is not being served by the webserver, and that is why no one can complete any tasks.
I don't know whether the folks over at Spymaster have removed the script intentionally to perform some maintenance, or if this is truly an error or bug that needs fixing. It would be great to hear from someone there if either are the case, and what the ETA is on restoring the task functionality.
Attached is a screenshot from Safari's Web Inspector panel showing thenginxserver response (a 404-page not found) for the tasts.js file.
Hope this helps shed some light on the actual problem.
BTW, I am @iamjolly.
-
This is due to your cache. Force-refresh the page; that configuration is no longer relevant (They switched to a Flash architecture for preforming tasks; you've cached content that is still attempting to load tasks.js, I believe) -
Inappropriate?I have lost two $9,000,000 Armoured cars , and will probably stop playing this game, what a waste of time! No wonder they need to hire a programmer cause they didn't get it right the first time ! FUCK !!
-
I'm quite sorry you feel this way. Keep in mind as I had noted earlier that it's a new game and still has things to work out, that's what we are here to try and help do. I am sure that if you tried making a game like this, you'd run into some errors as well. [Also, please try to refrain from swearing.] -
Inappropriate?Perhaps the company don't feel this is a problem because it is forcing people into assassinations for something to do... therefore testing out the company's adjustments to the assassination engine.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? So probably they want more people to use this site, they want more people doing more assassinations, they are tired of people liking their game and wanted to piss them off so bad that they would all quit playing it and all or any other games that they put out, the real game was to see if this site for complaining about poorly coded games can handle huge influxes of livid gamers, they are running a test to see how many people will keep playing after totally screwing up their games beyond repair,... I don't know help me here am I missing something?
-
Inappropriate?Well I guess I can get some sleep, I've been up since I started playing, I forget when that was, lots of five minutes's ago, Sunday night I think, I don't know I really can't remember, maybe their lawyers counsilled them to do something to make people quit playing because the severe addictivness that was causing insomnea was going to become a liabilitydue to a rash of lawsuits,.....
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?Might tasks.js be cashed in our browsers somewhere that we could recover it from, and then use something like firebug to link to a local javascript file?
-
1 person says
this solves the problem
-
Inappropriate? That FUCKING SUCKED, and I will keep playing for a while, till I keel over from exaustion or the next bug pops up !
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate? Is anyone else like me and accidentaly hits the sell button sometimes for weapons when your trying to buy them?
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate? The game is going to be expected to come down at certain times. The times that it does will more often or not be before the morning rush to work. During these times please be patient with us and understanding as we are trying to fix the kinks in the game and keep it fun for everyone.
The script at the top posted by Eston was for people like elliotcable. -
I don't think you understand what you're saying. The script that was linked was WRITTEN by elliotcable. It was trying to automate the process of using energy on jobs. Obviously the problem that elliot was seeing was either A) because of a fault in his script B) spymaster has blocked his account from being able to perform tasks or C) his script was working so spymaster changed something to stop him from being able to use it any more.
That just means that elliot's problem "was not an issue" as the question is tagged, however all the after comments may have been related to a change (if spymaster DID make one) if not then they have no relation. -
They do, in fact, have relation. I wasn't banned, they simply re-worked their architecture to require Flash. I'm betting the other posters in this thread, like me, don't have Flash installed for various reasons. -
Inappropriate? So me pushing the task button and not getting any sort response is just the game being down? Despite the fact that I'm still getting income from my safe houses, and able to buy items on the black market, assassinate people and deposit money in my bank account? Somehow that explanation doesn't really hold water for me.
-
Inappropriate? It would be nice if people would not get so frustrated over a game.. I am sorry that you 'lost time, money' and whatever else you considered a loss. Maybe they did not consider this a problem because they were working on the issue. They showed what's up, told you what is going on. They've been here trying to answer your questions and handle everything that's going on.
I think it'd be nice that people be more greatful sometimes instead of just biting their heads off or just being critical. I can understand the frustration, really I do. I also understand that it's a game that a lot of people seem to be taking for granted. Enjoy it while you can how you can. Take more things in stride. If there's an issue-look here to see if it's already posted or post it yourself and work WITH the staff to help resolve it.
I’m a little disappointed in some players.
-
I'm not frustrated that I've lost time/money/etc. I'm frustrated that when looking through the support threads that this problem has been deemed "Not really a problem" or "You're just trying at a busy time of day" when a: it is a problem for a bunch of people and b: its been happening all day and no other game functions are affected. I'd be much happier if there was actual acknowledgment of the problem rather just getting a "wait and see" response. -

Not for long. :) -
Inappropriate? It would be very cool to have the "Preform Task" button tell me that Flash is required rather than doing nothing.
-
Ken makes a very good point. I'd assumed something was broken; as I'm running on x86_64 Arch Linux in FireFox and haven't bothered to attempt an install of the very-beta 64bit Flash Player, and don't have Flash installed. -
He said Nightly builds of.... not that Chrome isnt a full featured. -
Inappropriate?I am running Firefox 3, latest build and I cannot get my task to work correctly. Perhaps rather than bottleneck the client side you should secure your ServerSide scripting?
I’m Wondering why i even play this game anymore
-
Inappropriate?Having same issue on 060509 at 2130 pacific. Using Firefox 2.0.0.20 with flash 10.0.22.87 which has worked flawlessly up until now.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? Not working for me on OS X in Safari or Fluid. Also not working on the iPod Touch, and it was yesterday. :( Have tried hard refreshes.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate? This no longer works for me using Safari 4 for OS X. Doesn't work on my iPhone either.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? After the latest system upgrade to fix the assassination engine, no tasks are working for me either :-(
I’m killing people like crazy
-
Inappropriate?Tasks have stopped working for me as well. Firefox 3.0.10 (not a beta but latest stable release), latest Flash player. Logged of and cleared private data (cache, etc) several times. Tasks still won't work.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Flash is a piece of ****.... Every page takes much longer to load now. Nice job guys. *clap*....*clap*
-
would you rather us allow people to script the page and automate the process of doing task etc etc so that people were able to cheat? -
well if that's such a problem then you should make the appropriate changes to the code to make it so they CAN'T cheat. Flash blows... Who made you a rep anyhow? -
We did make it so they couldn't cheat.
Also: I work here.So my boss made me a rep. Thanks. -
Short of having a webcam inspect that a user is actually at the keyboard, it is quite hard to tell the difference.
That said, why are you so concerned with the performance? Is it that much slower? You still have to wait 5 minutes, this just means slightly less time to wait. -
AppleNerd, we *did* make the appropriate changes to the code. Unfortunately, you just don't find them acceptable. -
I'm on a top of the line connection with the latest build of Safari and the latest beta of Flash and it still takes forever. -
I am on a Sprint EV-DO connection using Firefox and overall page speed seems completely unchanged from the past few days. I suspect you are blaming the wrong thing for your latency issues. -
Funny, I have an XP box, not the best connection using FF 3.0.0.10 and load times are less than a second for anything but assassinations. :P
I guess you might have to define forever? Are you seeing more than a second in load times? Saying things are slow with out measuring is a little like saying that meter is a short distance. It depends on your perspective. Yes a meter is a short distance if you're a human, but not so much to an ant. -
The pages themselves load fairly snappy, less than .25 of a second, but click buttons to deposit money or to perform tasks takes a good second or 2, and sometimes Safari will freeze. -
AppleNerd... Bluntly speaking. Get off it. A good SECOND OR TWO. Wow... are you SERIOUSLY complaining about something that takes but seconds to load? I really dislike nit-picking whiners. That is NOT what beta testing is about, it's about pointing out blatent errors, not something that does not suit your fancy, If you are so displeased with the game and how it plays and having to wait a few seconds for things then you can escort yourself away. There is absolutely no need for you to try and have a hissy fit over such a petty thing. Really tired of hearing so many peoples dislike over flash...really. I don't mind it. I think the ones that are that bothered by it can go. Maybe they should make their own game..non flash based.
Anyhow. Done. Wasted enough words here. :( -
A second or two is a long time on the internet. Waiting a second or two for a page to load? Dubious, at best. Okay if it's just somebody's little blog. Not okay if it's a popular and modern web application.
But multiple *full seconds* (realize, we're not measuring in ms here, but full seconds!) for a XHR/AJAX action to be preformed?
If I recall correctly, in this particular case, it's a full few seconds before the page even begins to reload (and instead of being XHR-powered to prevent that like many other parts of the app, the page actually *does* reload). -
Inappropriate? To tell the truth, I'm experiencing that same lag. You click a task button, it greys out, and then everything just ... "sits there" for approximately five to ten seconds. Then the page reloads, having completed your task.
I’m indifferent
-
Hrm this was intended as a comment to the above post, but oh well. -
Thanks, now I feel like someone is backing my nagging :D -
Hey, don't thank me. It's my fault they decided to switch to flash *headdesk* -
Inappropriate? Not freezing, oddly. So I'm not sure what could be causing it. Usually if there is lagging I'm the first to feel it.
-
Inappropriate?TBH, Flash is so old and obsolete that Microsoft Silverlight is much better (and they have a Mac version). Besides with flash you can't just click once like you can with HTML buttons, you need to click and click until Flash decides it wants to listen, which can be a good 3-5 clicks.
-
I still have yet to have these problems... maybe I'm just lucky somehow and have managed to not be on when things are going wonky and don't have the freezing issues..XD Crazy stuff that is. Flash has yet to give me problems. I also don't use a mac. o.o;
