Support issue - Autostandby OS 5.0+
Posted issue with Autostandby not working on OS 5, 9700 Bold II. I purchased it for 8900 then upgraded. How do I get a message to SteelThorn? I can't find any support info and my emails to support just get returned

As Joe mentioned, AutoStandby is currently not compatible with OS 5.0. This is primarily due to changes RIM made to both the Input Simulation behavior on all BlackBerry devices and because of changes to the built-in standby mode operation itself. We are still investigating possible workarounds, but there may not end up being one.
To compound the problem, the App World does not currently let you specify forward incompatibility. Meaning, if you see an app is compatible with the Bold 9000, you can't say "Compatible with the Bold 9000 only if not running OS 5.0". It's all or nothing. We are trying to get them to change this, but for now we have added a disclaimer in the description. AutoStandby is currently not marked compatible with Storm, Storm2, Bold 9700, etc.
App World also does let us refund anything, nor can we create coupons for it. However, users who recently purchased AutoStandby can use coupon "XJG02ON" for the next week to receive 50% any of our titles from our main website. I'd also suggest everyone with OS 5.0 and AutoStandby to star this thread so you can follow updates as they become available. Feel free to post any questions related to AutoStandby on OS 5.0 here.

Hi there,
Thanks for stopping by. Yes, AutoStandby isn't compatible on the 9700/OS 5 right now. It might be possible in a future release, but unfortunately I do not have a release date at this time.
You can find our FAQ/KB here: http://faq.steelthorn.com
And device compatibility here: http://faq.steelthorn.com/index.php?V... -

Since I can't use the purchased product and your info in BB App world does not specify it can't be used on OS 5, can I get a refund or use the $$$ I paid towards another program SteelHorn offers? I just purchased AutoStandby 3 weeks ago.

While I appreciate Steelthorn's acknowledgement their software does not work on OS 5, I don't think marking the problem "Solved" is appropriate. It's not solved, it's just recognized.

I appreciate the offer unfortunately I don't want any of your other software. I want autostandby, that's why I bought it in the first place. I have Quick Launch and it does what your Intellilaunch does. I guess I should just be happy I was not charged more than I was to buy your software in the first place. Hopefully you can figure out how to make this work in OS 5+. At the time I purchased the software there was no indication it would not work with 5.0 or I probably would not have purchased it. Thank you for your time and I'll just keep checking back to see if an update becomes available.

Hey Kendal,
Sorry for your frustration. We really care about our customers and so we strive to offer quality applications for free or as close to free as possible (none on the AppWorld being over 2.99), and to be very specific in the description. The AppWorld doesn't allow us to give refunds. You will note in the AppWorld it states that AutoStandby is not compatible with OS 5 yet.

Unfortunately, RIM made changes to the built in stand-by mode that are outside of our control, as Zaventh mentioned. However we are constantly trying to work with RIM in every way possible to ensure all of our applications work seamlessly with all OSs.
Have a great week! ~Kara -

This is now a month after the initial post. Is there a resolution yet?

Hi.
I used AutoStandby on my BlackBerry Bold 9000 and I liked your programm very much. Now I am going to switch to the Bold 9700 but I realized, you have no AutoStandby version for the Bold 9700.
I am very disapointed about it. How will you please solve this problem?
Thanks for a reply.
Regards

When I ordered Autostandby from BB App world it didn't say it wasn't compatable with OS 5 that I can remember. I bought it in November 2009. It's interesting they trfuse to give our money back. I guess they need the $2.99 more than they need a customer base. I suggest you twitter / facebook / blog / post to Blackberry Forum exactly what this company is really like.

The link provided in the response above is to BB appl world website. That site was not available until recently. I ordered from the link on my BB because that's all there was at the time. There was no notice the OS5 would not work. They say App World doesn't "allow" them to refund, I wonder if App world allows them to use the bathroom.

I just blew a few dollars down the toilet on this software. What bugs me is that it should have worked on the Curve - all I did was lose the first version I had on the phone when SPRINT had to give me a rehab phone, and now the version on the website won't work???

I'm mystified as to why the company has said their answers solve the problem, when they admit that they're still working on the solution? Steelthorn has been an outstanding provider of apps for quite some time, this is just plain unacceptable.
If you can fix it, please do. If you can't, don't mark the answers as "this solves the problem." -

Hi Mike,
That's just the wording this support software uses when we mark a reply our "best answer" so people don't have to read the entire thread to find it. Unfortunately we can't customize that text. The actual status of this problem is "Acknowledged" which you can see at the top of the grey box with my earlier reply where it says "The company has acknowledged this problem.". We are still investigating and working with RIM with AutoStandby on OS5 but have no known workarounds yet. Sorry for any confusion.

This explanation is only partially correct. AutoStandby does work on my 9700 bold with several versions of 5.x; 5.0.0.296, 351, 714. It stopped working when I upgraded to 5.0.0.862.
The explanation offered for why is does not work is incorrect.
It also did not work on my 8900 when I upgraded from 4.x to 5.0.0.592. -

Hello there. The explanation of why it does not work is correct, even if it may not seem that way. OS 5 already has a built-in standby feature which makes using AutoStandby unnecessary and redundant. It may be that AutoStandby doesn't crash on your 9700, but having it installed isn't really doing anything, either. As you can see, it did not work on your 8900 after you upgraded to OS 5. due to the incompatibilities stated above. Essentially, RIM made their own version of AutoStandby for OS5 and using that works just as well. Thank you for you interest in our application. -

Mike,
I did some more testing. Autostandby works with OS 5 up to maybe 5.0.0.46x.
I downgraded OS 5 on my 9700 to 5.0.0.442
and on my 8900 to 5.0.0.411
It definitely works on the 9700 and 8900 with OS 5, at least up to those builds. With builds like 714 and 822, it does not work.-
Hello, I appreciate you letting me know. It's interesting to hear that it still works on certain builds of OS 5. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

It does not appear that it is specifically the standby feature of OS 5. There are other apps in BB appworld that describe the same problem, apps locking the phone have that issue. See this quote from an app on app world...
"AutoLock Custom Edition from the Custom Series is the ONLY automatic screen locking utility that works with OS builds greater than 5.0.0.5xx!! " -

Hello. Using the Lock button on the phone will simultaneously lock the keypad and also put the phone into standby. Thank you for your question and have a nice day. -
