Why does my free memory continue to go down and how do I stop it. It went done by .4MG this afternoon and I didn't do anything. Is Quick Pull causing it?

Hi there. The short answer is that no, QuickPull is not causing the memory usage. The BlackBerry OS uses memory pretty much full-time and rather inefficiently. QuickPull was created to counter this by allowing for scheduled reboots to free up the used memory. Aside from scheduling daily reboots, you can set QuickPull to reboot when the device memory falls below a certain threshold of your choice. This will keep the phone running smoothly throughout the day.
QuickPull itself is a very "light-weight" application. It uses the built-in RIM scheduling API's to handle it's scheduled rebooting which means it doesn't even have to run in the background. QuickPull is in fact your best bet in combating the gradual memory leak inherent in the Operating System. Thank you for your question and please let me know if you need anything else. Thanks for using Steelthorn Software!-
scottsemel1 August 19, 2010 21:15Mike: Within 15 minutes of my daily automatic Quickpull reset, my File Free memory has dropped from about 13M to 9M, and this is when I first awake in the morning and haven't yet used the phone other than to check the memory. What can I do to diagnose the memory leak? Thanks.EditDeleteRemove

Hello, Scott. If you leave any applications running that use background processes, this can cause free memory to drop. Make sure you exit any application you have stopped using, as it is not always immediately obvious which apps use background processes and which don't.
One way to combat memory leaks on BlackBerry phones is to enable Memory Cleaning. To do this, navigate to Options > Security Options > Advanced Security Options > Memory Cleaning. Enable it and set the options of your choice. You can set it to clean after idle and upon holstering. Closing programs you aren't using, along with Memory Cleaning and QuickPull, should keep your phone running smoothly. I hope this information takes care of the problem, and please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. Thank you for using Steelthorn Software! -

Not an answer. Blackberry claims it is Quickpull that is causing the memory loss and I will eventually run out of memory bedcause of Quickpull. What gives. As I staqted in my first question-the memory goes down even when I am not using the phone. One notice says it's down to 9.4 and the next time I use the phone it says it's 9.2. So your explanition does not answer the question.

Well, as I said before, in our experience, the BlackBerry operating systems use memory pretty much full-time and rather inefficiently. I've never seen any evidence that QuickPull causes memory leaks, but a simple way to test this is to uninstall QuickPull and monitor your memory usage. I'd be very interested to see if the memory leak stops once QuickPull is removed. Considering we have thousands of satisfied QuickPull users, I feel that RIM is just trying to protect their interests by blaming us for causing a problem that we in fact provide a workaround for. According to the Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/NA_WSJ_..., even the new BlackBerry Torch is not immune to requiring battery pulls to maintain stable function. All QuickPull does is achieve a "battery pull" by software means so that you don't have to physically remove the battery. I am very sorry you did not find my first response satisfactory and I hope that you continue to use Steelthorn Software applications in the future. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend! -
