PC Magazine called it "Best personal firewall in the roundup" in 2005. Computer Shopper in the U.K. gave it their 2006 Budget Buy Award with: "A seriously good firewall for the money."
False positives in the NIPS module of Sunbelt Personal Firewall version 4.6.1839.0 are blocking communications for a few of my applications. The only workaround I found so far is to permit medium priority intrusions, but I don't like this at all. It all started after I installed Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. Some of the messages logged (among others) are "ICMP PATH MTU denial of service", "ICMP L3retriever Ping" and "ICMP Dstination Unreachable Communication Administratively Prohibited". The sources of the bogus attacks are my VPN Gateway, company DNS servers and machines within my company's corporate firewall.
The quickest way to reproduce the problem is to run an Excel spreadsheet which tries to refresh with an ODBC query. Copying large files to another computer in my home network also triggers the firewall behavior.
Vipre and new Counterspy 3.1.2315 compatible with Thunderbird? Very slow response to open anything. All is good when disabled. Tried disabling the email scanner in Vipre--no change. Had updated Kerio (SPF) to newest version before installing and had uninstalled Counterspy before installing Vipre.
Uninstalled Vipre and reinstalled new version of Counterspy, and then had same problem with email response so slow it was unbearable. Exit Counterspy and again, email just fine.
BTW, first scan with Vipre wiped out all my email--had to establish "new" account in Thunderbird and then import original mailbox, but all settings and filters are gone.
No problems for two years of using the products, so was excited by all the good reviews of Vipre and had been looking for AVG alternative to new version 8 (I did uninstall that too before Vipre), so am frustrated to the max.
Installed sunbelt firewall and had a banner that would now go away. So, I went ADD/Remove PROGRAMS in Windows XP and deleted firewall with idea to reinstall (and banner might go away). Sunbelt firewall now not show up in ADD/Remove PROGRAMS. However Windows XP recognizes sunbelt firewall as installed, and Sunbelt icon is at the bottom 'toolbal' of my Windows homepage. Sunbelt firewall also shows up under MY PROGRAMS but not under ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS so I cannot get rid of hit for the following problem.
My button to LOG OFF and TURN OFF my computer do not work. Nothing happens when I hit the button. In frustration, I turned the computer off at power button and turned on computer. The Sunbelt firewall icon was gone and both LOG OFF and TURN OFF then worked. I went then to MY PROGRAMS and started Sunbelt Firewall. The icon reappears at bottom and again, my LOG OFF and TURN OFF button now do not work. I cannot turn off or restart my computer. I have disabled Sunbelt firewall and reactivated Wndows defender and this does not help. LOG OFF and TURN OFF do not work. I like SUnbelt firewall but cannot remove b/c not show up in ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
I keep getting this message from time to time and the program will shutdown: Sunbelt Personal Firewall 4 - GUI - cannot connect to service. What does this mean and what can I do to correct the problem causing the message.
While using Sunbelt, I seem to have problems with web pages loading. That is if they load at all. On occasion I have to stop the page, and refresh a couple of different times to finally get to my destination.
Why do I have to turn OFF the firewall to log into Microsofts login.live.com?
I can see https pages OK, but when logging in to login.live.com (to get to Microsoft's communities) I get a page not found, unlesss I turn the firewall off.
Hi, I bought counterspy on line a while back. I had to get a new hardrive and I have a new ISP now also. How do I get my counterspy back. I have no registration number now as everything was on my old hard drive. ...I had also purchased your fire wall also. Thank you for your help. I also have a new email now so you have no way to contact me from my old one.
SPF seems to be blocking MS Outlook from downloading email from my ISP. If I disable SPF, Outlook works but I cannot find a config setting to allow Outlook to work while SPF is running. Any advice? Ta.!
After i have deinstalled your sunbelt personal firewall (v.4.6.1839) and would install the new 4.6.1845, its abort with a message "Error: Internal Error" The installation of the 4.3 works well, but not any 4.6.
What should I do?
Since installing SPF, I am unable to use javascript, windows media player does not work, nothing comes up in system restore (it is a blank page) and napster does not work (related to media player). With your help, I have un-installed SPF, but these problems remain. Need your help to straighten out my PC!
SPF blocking Remote Desktop... Unless I'm not logged in. If I reboot, I can get in. Once I log in, I cannot Remote Desktop (fails after a few minutes of trying). I set svchost to permit all in Network Security, and I allowed the correct IP to the Trusted Area. I'm using HIPS and NIPS. Also tried the minor upgrade (uninstalling and installing). Logs don't report anything (failures) that I can see that would help. I only get the chance to try this every few days, so sorry if I don't get back right away. At least I can get in if I reboot before I leave work. :) Thanks!
Installed purchased version of VIPRE and now my computer is very slow at login. It actually never gets to my Desktop and is very sluggish...like it's locked up. I also have Personal Firewall v 4.6.1845.0 installed. If I disable the SBAMSvc.exe service, I am able to get logged in and to my Desktop.
Hi
I am running XP Home, SP3 on AMD Athlon XP2600+, 1.75Gb RAM.
I have previously been running Sunbelt Personal Firewall, Counterspy 2 and AVG Free 8.0.
I have uninstalled AVG free and upgraded Counterspy 2 to VIPRE 3.1.1543.1, software version 3.1.2243, definition version 2195. I also upgraded SPF to 4.6.1845.
Initial scans caused BSOD, however when I disabled Rootkit detection, quick and deep scans ran OK.
n.b Deep scan 371 mins from 1am this morning.
The system is running OK except that Windows Media Player 11 will not run at all.
It ran fine prior to these upgrades.
Testing Spf.46.1751.0 on "Vista" 1 Gig of RAM
My Test Machine No Problems.
Going to take it for a more run Tonite....Mark

I have trouble adjusting the Personal firewall to work with windows live messenger. If I stop the firewall / messenger is working / once I start the firewall, it will cut some communication. I am not able to find, what should I adjust. Up to now satisfied customer.
