2 questions: 1) Has the Vista rootkit scan failure been solved, and 2) how do I prevent automatic updates when doing an individual file scan?
I have two questions:
1) having just reinstalled Vipre on my laptop running Vista SP1 (32 bit), I would like to know if it the rootkit scan crash/hang issue, which in fact caused me to uninstall Vipre in the first place has been addressed in the newest version of Vipre? I can't seem to verify from the "get satisfaction"-page that it has and there's no information on the Sunbelt webpage.
2) I find it extremely annoying that when I scan individual files using the right-click context menu, Vipre will always try to update definitions, even though I have specified that automatic updates should only occur every 24 hours. Is there a way to circumvent this time-wasting and annoying "feature" (and why does the entire Vipre program console open when you do right-click individual scans? Other antivirus programs only run a small, convenient dialogue box telling you the quick result of the custom file scan). All in all, the right-click context menu scan option in Vipre seems poorly thought out and executed - is there any way to remedy this, making it faster and less time consuming? If not, I recommend this improvement for future versions of Vipre.

Inappropriate?JV,
Thank you for posting. We have made a lot of significant changes to the scan engine since it's initial release. According to our testing, the rootkit detection should be back up and running again. However, each system is different and there could be something on the computer that we have not accounted for in our testing variables. If you are still having trouble with rootkit detection not working, please contact our support department so we can take a look into whats going on. support@sunbelt-software.com.
The only way to stop VIPRE from automatically checking out for definitions before each scan is to turn off the "Allow automatic Internet Access" feature within the VIPRE settings. However, by doing this, it will also disable the scheduled updates. I'll put in a feature request to see if we can change this around a bit. Also I'll put one in about the console opening on single file scans as well.
Regards,
Jason Layman

Inappropriate?Thank you for the quick reply, Jason! It looks like the rootkit issue has indeed been solved - at least in regards to my system/machine.
About the right-click context menu and automatic updates, I've used a dozen different antivirus or antispam programs and they have all solved this issue much more effectively, so I hope it gets written into the future versions of Vipre as it does make Vipre look a bit more, well, amateurish in its design. At least when compared to some of its other direct low-cost competitors.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?JV,
I put those suggestions in. Hopefully they will make it into the 4.0 release. :)
