"Bass.dll" flagged by Active Protection
Hi folks!
I frequently get Vipre notices that "Bass.dll" is a suspicious file, and I choose to allow because I see that it's in Windows\System32 and I don't want to delete anything from there. Yesterday I got 3 more, but this time from Program Files\PopCap Games. Does anyone have any more info on this mystery file? Safe? Unsafe? (I am not playing a game when this happens, but they are still installed on my system.)
(WinXP Pro, SP3'd & patched.) Thanks in advance!

Inappropriate?Hi Neil,
First, please be sure that you have the latest definitions for VIPRE. As of today, the latest version is 2225. If you have the latest version and feel that bass.dll is legitimate and has been incorrectly identified as malware, you can submit it here: http://research.sunbelt-software.com/... Once validated, it will be corrected in a future definition update.
As for PopCap Games, I looked it up and see that it a site hosts web games that require you to download a client of some kind. Visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PopCap_G... for more information about this company.
If you don't recall installing this application or do not wish to have it on your system, I recommend that you first try to remove it using the Add/Remove Programs utility first. -
Hi Mary Beth!
Thanks for the quick reply! I do indeed have the latest version (which is now up to 2226), but I'm still not sure if the "bass" VIPRE caught is legit or not. (That's why I wrote, for advice.) I don't know if I should submit it as malware as you suggested, or wait until someone else chimes in with more info.
I definitely downloaded & installed the PopCap games myself, but it was long ago and don't recall any other software or application bundled with them.
There seem to be at least 4 different bass.dll versions, but all from "Un4seen Developments" who/whatever they are. I'm just not sure what to do next.

(ps...I wasn't sure I my email reply would show up here too, so please excuse the duplicate.) -
Inappropriate? From what I can tell, bass.dll goes along with PopCap Games for the open source PopCap Games Framework

So then, just leave all the Active Protection alerts in the "Always Allow" list?
(I really don't want to uninstall the games as I've paid for them, but I will if you think they are hiding malware.) -
Inappropriate?Yes, and in the windows that pops up, check both the boxes to add to the "Always Allowed" list and to "Submit to Sunbelt for Analysis".
-
Ok, terrific! Thanks for all your help! (By the way, rather than bass like a fish, I'm pretty sure it's bass like "bass & treble" since it has to do with sound.) -
Hi again,
Well, it's been 12 days since our exchange but I still haven't heard back from anyone concerning this "bass.dll". Every time it comes up in a scan of any kind, it gets flagged by VIPRE as a suspicious file in Active Protection. I have to continously add it to the "Always Allowed" list, and I have also sent it (via Help|Send file for analysis...) many times to Sunbelt. It would be great if there was a link or a button to click for this right inside the box that pops up each time! The only 2 choices now are either Block or Allow, so I'm never really sure if my "suspicious file" has ever made it Sunbelt at all.
Thanka again in advance! -
Inappropriate?Neil, are your definitions currently up to date?
-
Hi Nick!
Yes, I just checked before this reply - "2252" (ver 3.1.2315)
