Inappropriate?Wendy, thank you for contacting Sunbelt Software.
The latest version of VIPRE is 3.1.2416. If you have an older version then I would suggest you just download the latest version here: http://go.sunbeltsoftware.com/?linkid... You'll want to shutdown VIPRE while running the installer and it will update VIPRE to the latest version.
After doing this are you able to update definitions normally?
Has VIPRE found any threats on the system recently or have you noticed any odd behavior? It's possible there may be a threat on the system that blocks antivirus software from updating.
Please also make sure that you don't have other security software such as a firewall blocking VIPRE's connection to our update servers. -

Inappropriate?Hey Wendy,
It look like the link was cut off. Try the one below instead.

Inappropriate?Jason,
I downloaded the information, but my software version before and after are the same (3.1.2416). If my computer is receiving and downloading the information, why would I receive these error messages? also, in between the dates mentioned above, I reviewed the report and there were no further attempts to download updated software, which led me to believe it was happening. I'm confused.
Any thoughts? -
Inappropriate?Wendy,
There are only three different error messages that VIPRE can display when it encounters an updating error, so the message is probably not as specific as it should be. Every time an update occurs it will check to see if your software is up to date as well as your definitions, so if this fails, it would display an error with downloading the software as well.
Are you receiving this error when you manually update, or only when it auto updates at a certain time?
Regards,
Jason Layman -
Inappropriate? My system is set to automatically update and seems to do so without issue. So the messages are received via automatic updates. I become aware of them when there's an ! in my Vipre tray and I review the history.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Wendy,
If you go into the VIPRE history, View > Manage Malware > View History, System tab, do you notice that the updates are failing at a certain time? The default auto scan time is set at 1am. Before VIPRE runs a scan it will check for updates. I believe this is where it may be failing.

Inappropriate?I was able to review back to 1/18/09. 2 of 4 attempts were def updates that failed at 1:00 a.m. (1 on 1/27 & 1 on 1/31). 1 of 4 attempts to update def failed at 10:18 pm and 1 attempt to update software (at same date/time) failed (both on 1/24).

I received error report again this morning. Error occurred about 10:00 pm last night for both threat updates and software updates. The scan change I made yesterday was for 1:00 am and changed that to a later time, so this timeframe around 10:00 is a separate issue. I'm more confused now. -
Was it the scheduled scan that initiated the update at 10:00pm, or was it the regular auto update? Try setting the scan for a time when you are in front of your computer so you can see exactly what is happening when it tries to update the definitions before the scan.
We can also try pinging out update server to see if you are losing any packets. Go to Start > Run, type in "cmd" and hit Ok. Once in the command prompt type; "ping -t updates.sunbelt-software.com" then hit Enter. Let it run for about 30 seconds, then press Ctrl+C, to stop the process.
If you have any packets that did not make it through, then something is filtering or monitoring your connection. It should state that you have a 0% loss if everything is ok. -
Inappropriate?Wendy,
Try changing your scheduled scan time for something other than 1am, such as 4am. Also increase the auto update time to update more frequently so if a scan launches a definitions check, you will already be up to date. I think the problem is that many people do not change the default scheduled scan time, so our servers are getting bombarded at certain times causing the updates to fail. I've mentioned this to development and they are going to look into ways around this problem.
Let me know if you still experience these updating problems after changing these settings.

Jason Layman -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that. If necessary, you'll hear from me again!! Have a great day!!! :-)
-
Inappropriate?Jason, when I attempted to do as you instructed I received the following response: not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file.
Here's what I typed in: "ping -tupdates.sunbelt-software.com" (I tried it with and w/o quotation marks; I tried it with and w/o a space after the word 'ping'). I still in all cases receive the same response. What am I doing wrong? The 10:00 timeframe is not a scheduled scan, it's just one of the automatic review times.
What am I doing wrong?
Wendy -
Inappropriate? It should be "ping -t updates.sunbelt-software.com" no quotes and there is a space after the -t.
