Inappropriate?No, the pre-boot scan will only kick-in if VIPRE determines that your system is infected. -

Inappropriate?Not for the boot time scan, You can do a deep scan from the command line in safe mode. This is similiar but not exactly the same as the boot time scan. The following article explains how to do this.
