Cannot delete hotmail messages thru outlook inbox after SPF install
I use outlook 2003 on Vista. I connect to hotmail thru outlook.
I have just installed SPF (I already have VIPRE installed) and now
when I try and "delete" email from my hotmail inbox (which is of course http) I get a pop up message saying the following " The server responded 'System does not support the specified encoding.'. - I really would like to be able to delete email....any ideas?
If I delete email in any of my other inboxes (eg. Gmail which is pop/smtp) thru outlook - no problems.
Any thoughts to allow me to delete unwanted email from my hotmail inbox?
Thanks.

Inappropriate?Steve,
Thanks for posting.
If you disable the firewall, are you able to delete an email? If the problem remains, then we will have to look into other reasons this may be happening. If the problem goes away with the firewall disabled, we can try creating an exception for Outlook and the connections it uses for your Hotmail account. To do this, just follow the directions below.
To let that application through to the internet, we'll have to temporarily switch SPF to advanced mode so it can create a rule for the application.
Please open SPF. You can do that by double-clicking the purple shield icon, which is in the bottom-right of your screen, near the system clock.
Then, click the Network Security tab, found on the left. Now on the right you'll see a list of applications. Find the one called "Any other application."
Click each of the 4 columns until the columns read ASK ASK ASK ASK. Then click the Apply Button.
Now, try running Outlook and deleting a message from the Hotmail account. Notice SPF will pop up with a dialog box that asks you to click "PERMIT" or "DENY" to an application. Be sure to CHECK the checkbox above these choices to create a rule for this application, and then click the "PERMIT" button. Do this for each time you receive the message. Use the application as normal, and then exit the application.
SPF has now made a rule for this program. Go back into SPF where we were and change "Any Other Application" back so they read in this order: DENY PERMIT DENY PERMIT by clicking each of the 4 columns until they are changed to those values, then click Apply. SPF is now back in Simple mode.
If creating an exception does not take care of the problem, just let me know.

Inappropriate?Hi,
When I disable the firewall the problem goes away.
I already have outlook defined in the list of applications on the Network Security tab.
I changed all settings for Outlook to "Permit", and I changed all settings for Any other App to Ask.
The problem still persists. What I have found though is that it appears the "delete" message is getting to the hotmail server and actually deleting the message because when I hit "Send/Receive" to redisplay any new email message etc - then the email that I "deleted" that generated the pop up message - is gone.
So it appears that this firewall is somhow trapping something to do with the deletion confirmation coming back (I think).
However, performing the changes mentioned above did not resolve the issue - though disabling the firewall does.
Any further thoughts?
Cheers,
Steve.

Inappropriate?Lets see if we can narrow it down to a specific area of the firewall.
In the firewall configuration, under the Web tab disable Filter Foreign Cookies. If that does not work, disable Web Filtering altogether.
Please let me know the result.

Inappropriate?Hi JasonL,
I assme you meant the "Privacy" sub tab under the Web tab? Anyhow the three "cookie" settings are all unchecked (I did not change them - they were already that way).
Whats next?
Cheers,
Steve.
I’m yikes

Inappropriate?Steve,
Have you tried disabling Web Filtering altogether? To do this, open the firewall. Click on Web on the left. You should be on the Ad blocking tab. Uncheck the "Enable Web Filtering" option then click Apply. Does everything work normally with this option disabled? -
Inappropriate?You got it!
Unchecking that flag stopped the display of the pop up error message.
So the next question is how do we set a rule to allow web filtering for this outlook process - but filter the rest?
Thanks,
Steve.

Inappropriate?Steve,
Leaving this option unchecked doesn't really make the system less secure. Most current browsers already have web filtering built into them already.
If you would like to leave web filtering on you can set up an exception. To do this, open the firewall. Click Web on the left then click the Site exceptions tab. You'll need to enter the correct web address here. Because of the way hotmail works it would be several different addresses which need to be added here.

this solves the problem

Inappropriate?Ok - you got it.
I tried adding a few different web addresses based upon what I saw in by signing into hotmail thru IE - but none that I entered seemed to work. Therefore I will leave the check box unchecked - though to be honest I would much prefere to have a double layer of protection for those pesky pop ups and pop unders....
Many thanks for your assistance - you have been a great help.
Steve.
I’m cool
