Latest version of SBAMsvc.exe uses 99% CPU with XP SP3 and Thunderbird
SBAMsvc.exe uses 99% CPU with XP Sp3 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.19 (20081209)
Vipre is version 3.1.2416 (Vipre Version 3.1.1608.1)
The system was running fine for months until Thunderbird auto-updated to the latest version also XP downloaded some updates at the same time. If I turn off active protection sbamsvc.exe will not consume all of the CPU resources. I turn on active protection and disable trojan and running programs I did not have the problem. Well, at least for a little while now it seems to be back after a reboot.
The system has 2 GB Ram and is an Intel P4 2.4 GHz.

Inappropriate?Thank you for posting- I am sorry to hear this. Something is conflicting with Vipre. Do you have any other security programs, if so please remove them? If you have Windows Defender please make sure that it is turned off. If this does not help please uninstall Vipre from the Add/Remove and Reinstall. This will completely refresh all files for the Vipre program. If this persists after reinstalling then please send an email with brief description of the problem to Support@sunbeltsoftware.com so that we can open a support ticket for you. Thank you.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? No. I only have Sunbelt Personal Firewall installed. I do not have Winows Defender installed. DEP is running only for essential windows programs (I don't know if this can be turned off completely.)
Uninstalling Vipre and re-installing leaves the system vulnerable for the time between the uninstall and reinstall. I view that as a very poor recommendation to fix a problem. If you can tell me why that would magically fix my problem I would be willing to attempt it.
You advertise Vipre as being an enterprise class product for the consumer. Uninstalling an application and reinstalling it as a way to "fix" problems is not an acceptable solution.
I prefer to provide you with a stack trace and logs run at debug level so you can see what the problem is versus fooling around with bandaid suggestions. -
Inappropriate?Hello Larry, We are aware of a problem with Thunderbird and Vipre causing the problem you described, we are currently working on a new version that fixes that problem, it should be released sometime soon.
-
Inappropriate?Larry I have the exact same problem, surely Sunbelt can get a fix out ASAP my PC is absolutely useless at the moment - I don't want to turn VIPRE off and i can't get any work done, computer hangs within 2 minutes of a reboot.....
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Hello Mark, it might be a different problem in your case. Please contact us direct at support@sunbeltsoftware.com and they we can create a ticket and assist you with troubleshooting the problem.
-
Inappropriate?Yes, Mark, open a ticket with Sunbelt. The more data they can collect on this issue, the better for us all. Even if your issue turns out to be identical it is one more data point that shows how frequently the problem occurs. Sunbelt provided me with a work-around that allows the system to work again.
I am sure the developers at Sunbelt Software want to get this issue fixed and know how many ways it may manifest. -
Inappropriate?I have this problem too. Removing software and reinstalling it did not fix the problem. Switched to AVG temporarily as I need protection that does not drag my system to a standstill.
-
Inappropriate?Patrick,
Open a trouble ticket with support@sunbeltsoftware.com. The more people reporting this issue the more data Sunbelt will have. Perhaps this defect will be given a greater priority to fix.
I was given a work-around by Sunbelt Support that allows me to continue using Vipre with Thunderbird. Your situation may be different so it is good to have Sunbelt engineers look at your issue and propose a solution.
What I needed to do was edit the settings for active protection and turn off the feature "Check files when they are opened or copied" -
Inappropriate?Because I don't like the idea of turning off active protection for all files when they are opened, I tried one more thing:
I added thunderbird.exe to the list of files that are always allowed and re-enabled "Check files when they are opened or copied". This seems to be working.
To do this I opened Vipre clicked on the manage tab selected Always allowed hit Add then added thubderbird.exe to Allow by full path by selecting browse and navigating to its location on my system.
So far I have not seen the slowdown originally reported in this thread.

Inappropriate?I had this issue with my desktop last night running Counterspy 3 and Win XP SP2. I have CS set at defaults and there was no AV running (I have Kaspersky installed but it was not loaded)
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Dataknight, This might have been an issue with the 5019 definitions, please email us at Support@sunbeltsoftware.com and we can assist you with resolving it.

Inappropriate?Vipre has the same conflict problems with Vista as on Windows XP. Follow the support link on Sunbelt software page and get the "System Process Disabler." While you are there, download a new copy of Vipre and definition files 5022 (last good configuration). (Make note of your Vipre product key you will need it.) Next run the System Process Disabler." This will shut down Vipre. You have to restart your system afterwards. Next go to the Control Panel and uninstall "all" Vipre. Another system restart. Reinstall Vipre from new file you downloaded. Another system restart. When your system is running, click on the Vipre icon. This will bring up the setup Wizard. Disable automatic updates first. Complete the rest of the wizard to your liking. You will need to re-enter your product key. Vipre will ask you to update the definitions. Cancel this. Get your definition file 5022 and put it in C://Program (files)/Sunbelt/Vipre/Definitions. Next to the Vipre main screen and go to File > Settings. In Update now, browse to the definition file you put in the Vipre folder and uncheck "completely update my definitions now." This will put the last known good configuration definition files for Vipre. You should now be good to go until they come up with a fix. This worked for all four of my machines. Takes about 20 mins. after the downloads.

Inappropriate?did this twice on my XP proffesional. Fix DID NOT work for me!
-
Inappropriate?Michael has given a great step-by-step for regressing to 5022.
One note of caution, though. My experience has been that when
one avoids updates, it takes very little time (a very few days)
before VIPRE stops functioning at all, complaining that the definitions
are too old. I don't know if it still behaves this way, but when I
mentioned this on some other posts, staff never responded to it.
So, it's a risk. And staff is noncommital as to how long the fix will
take (presumably they're at 99 percent usage too).
EDIT: Whoops. I just read Jeffrey Davison's post of a minute ago,
saying it didn't work for him. That's sad, though somehow not surprising.
I've gotten N false leads, as I wasted all of yesterday.
Some of today, too, including checking on whether today's updates
had helped. And contributing some postings today, in the absence
of fully satisfactory staff handling of this (though they're probably
overworked on this at this point). -
Inappropriate?I managed to get it working again without de-installing /re-installing using Jason's instructions from here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/sunbeltsof...
which are:
For those who continue to see high CPU usage even after a reinstall, follow the instructions below to remedy the issue.
Since the CPU usage is high, and the computer probably very sluggish, we'll have to first disable the service.
1. Click start then run, and type in "services.msc" then click "Ok."
2. In the window that opens find the service Named "Vipre antivirus + Antispyware."
3. Right click on it and go to "Properties." In here change the "Startup Type" to "Disabled" and hit "Stop" to stop the service, then click apply.
4. Now navigate to the following folder, C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\VIPRE\Definitions
5. Delete the files named "cadd.vtd" and "cdel.vtd."
6. Now restart your computer.
I’m glad I got it sorted out

Inappropriate?But, nickinsydney,
was your problem with the 5018-19
(starting around Tuesday or so),
or was it with the 5023-4,
starting Friday?
==============
In fact, neither of the files you mention
is there to be deleted, in my case. But,
I'm up to today's defs 5028, and by this
time they've taken care of that. Who knows
when they did that. But the problem remains.
And, there's still no description of who
will be affected (what equipment, what
configuration). Upshot: I can see in
advance that the old solution (in the thread
with 5018 in its title) will not help. -
Inappropriate? It was XP SP3 defs 5018 / 5019 and then again with 5023 (i think - one of the later ones). I downloaded updates yesterday (Saturday 7th Australia time) and that has fixed the problem.
I just kept the PC off until this suggestion came up - I couldn't be bothered with uninstalling and reinstalling because I couldn't get the blasted VIPRE to load so I could stop active scanning... -
Inappropriate? As in my earlier thread I had this issue, then for some unknown reason it disappeared (maybe a definitions upgrade?) but now it's back. PC is only slow when Thunderbird runs. I have generated a ticket with Sunbelt and I advise you to do the same.
I’m Waiting
-
Inappropriate?Looks like 5029 fixes it. On my two computers,
and I just noticed that Alex posted with that news too.
(Note that the email port assignment problem,
for folks who use SMTP port 587 to send mail,
persists. I can only send mail on 587 if I tell VIPRE
I'm using 25. I use 587 both in Thunderbird and Eudora.)
