Networked applications not working since installing SPF
My small office has two networked computers which share a database application and WinMessenger. Neither of these applications has worked on the network since I installed SPF (and Vipre) last month.

Inappropriate?Hello Chirodoc,
To get Sunbelt Personal Firewall to let applications on to the Internet, we'll have to temporarily switch Sunbelt Personal Firewall to advanced mode so it can create a rule for your applications.
Please open Sunbelt Personal Firewall. You can do that by double-clicking the purple shield icon, which is in the bottom-right of your screen, near the system clock.
Then, click the Network Security tab, found on the left. Now on the right you'll see a list of applications. Find the one called "Any other application."
Click each of the 4 columns until the columns read ASK ASK ASK ASK. Then click the Apply Button.
Now, try running all your Internet programs now. Notice Sunbelt Personal Firewall will pop up with a dialog box that asks you to click "PERMIT" or "DENY" to an application. Be sure to CHECK the checkbox above these choices so you can make a rule for this application, and then click the "PERMIT" button. Do this for each time you receive the message. Use your programs as normal for a few minutes until you are sure you've got every program setup.
Sunbelt Personal Firewall has now made a rules for these programs. Go back to Sunbelt Personal Firewall where we were and change "Any Other Application" back so they read in this order: DENY PERMIT DENY PERMIT by clicking each of the 4 columns until they are changed to those values, then click Apply.
Sunbelt Personal Firewall is now back in Simple mode, and you have successfully permitted your programs on to the Internet.
Let us know if you continue to have problems with those applications. -
Inappropriate?Thanks for your reply.
I did everything you recommended but it didn't make any difference.
Then I changed all the settings for the database program to PERMIT, and that also made no difference.
Can you recommend something else that I might try?
Thanks.
I’m confused.

Inappropriate?Chirodoc,
Here are the suggestions for getting a network working with SPF installed. You can either take each recommendation one at a time and see if they work for you, or follow each recommendation and once you have done them all, see if your home network works again. It is usually a combination of these suggestions that will get your home network working again with SPF installed.
Under Network Security, Under Applications, make sure you have Any Other Applications set to ask for both Trusted and Internet in, and permit for both Trusted and Internet out.
Also under Network security, under applications, make sure Windows File and Printer Sharing Trusted In and Trusted Out are set to Permit.
Under Predefined, do you have Other ICMP packets set to permit for trusted and Internet? How about Broadcast under that section too? Those need to be set to permit. Under the trusted area tab, make sure you have a check mark in all of the available options. Under Advanced tab, make sure you have Gateway Mode enabled. -
I tried each of your suggestions - except for one - without any improvement. The one I didn't try was for Windows File and Printer Sharing, because I couldn't find that one listed.
Can you help me locate that?
Thanks. -
Inappropriate?Chirodoc,
If you don't have Windows File and Printer Sharing then look for Netbios. Are you able to get that working? -
Netbios is already set to Permit for Trusted and Internet, both in and out. -
Inappropriate?Chirodoc,
Let's determine exactly what part of the firewall is blocking the connection. Please open the firewall. Click on Network Security on the left and make sure you're on the Applications tab. Uncheck the "Enable Network security module" option then click Apply. Are you able to get everything working now?
If not, please click on Intrusions on the left. Uncheck each option one at a time and click Apply, testing to see if you are able to get the programs working correctly each time.
Please let me know the results. -
No improvement in either of the programs, and none in using Windows Explorer, after trying this procedure. -
Inappropriate?Chirodoc,
If you right click on the firewall icon on the system tray and click Disable does everything work correctly? If not, does it work if you right click the firewall icon and click Exit? -
Inappropriate?No change. What now?
Thanks. -
Inappropriate?Chirodoc,
Please try shutting down both VIPRE and the firewall to see if either of them may be causing the problem. If it still doesn't work I'd like to have you try uninstalling the firewall and see if everything works. This will verify whether it is a firewall problem or if the problem may be with something else. -
None of that worked. But just as I was about to leave for the evening I get the bright idea of disabling the firewall on the computer I am trying to share with. Presto, no problem. So one-by-one I've gone back and reinstalled SPF, enabled VIPRE, rechecked the Intrusions options, and re-enabled network security module. The applications still work.
So now I suppose I have to apply your suggestions to the other workstation, until I get this to work. I will let you know how it turns out. -
Inappropriate?Chirodoc,
I'm glad to hear we've made some progress. Please let me know how everything turns out. -

Inappropriate?Joseph, Thank you for the post.
Were you having trouble getting magicjack to work with those steps?
Please let us know if you have any other questions
Thanks,
