PC will not boot properly following Antispyware Boot Time Scan
Today I attempted to open a program (Real Temp) that I've used before without issue. Vipre warned of a program attempting to change startup data (I don't recall the exact message that Vipre popped up). I clicked the button for more info, and the program hung. I got the "Not Responding" message on the window fram for Vipre.
At this point, I got a NT Authority System Shutdown warning box, with a 60 second timer on it. Prior to the countdown finishing, the computer hardlocked. I reset the machine and on boot up, I received a Antispyware Boot Time Scan, which did not finish correctly (several messages about being unable to find certain files).
At that point, the screen went black and appeared to hang. I tried rebooting into safe mode, and it would hang with a black screen with the Windows build in white text at the top. I also tried booting into safe mode with command prompt, etc, with the same result.
A short time ago, I tried rebooting the system and starting Windows normally and from last known good config, with the same result. Out of frustrationn, I left the machine at the black screen following the failed Antispyware Boot Time Scan, and after approximately 20 minutes, the "Windows is Starting Up" splash screen appeared (I'm running xp sp3), and after another 10 minutes, I was able to select my account to log in. Upon selecting the user account, there was another 7-10 minute delay, and eventually Windows loaded.
I tried using system restore, after a long pause (6-8 mins) I received a pop up that System Restore is unable to protect the PC, please restart. I attempted to restart, but the pc again appeared to hang, and after 30 minutes, I turned it off.
I would very much appreciate any help in resolving this issue. I do not have a Windows recovery CD, as I did not receive one from the OEM I purchased the system from. Thanks in advance for help you are able to give regarding this issue.

Inappropriate?Hello DB11, thank you for posing your problem.
If you have another computer in the house, you can copy the services.exe to bootable USB drive and place it on the computer that needs it. We are working on another solution, but at this time if you do not have a installation disc for windows this is the alternative solution.
if you have any questions please let us know.
Thanks,
Peter -
Can you elaborate on the process of copying services.exe to a USB?
i.e. Where do I get "services.exe"? Also, can I select to boot from the USB just like I would select to boot from a CD instead of my hard drive in the boot menu? I'm hoping to avoid reinstalling from ground zero, as I don't have Windows discs either. -
Sandor,
I'd suggest contacting us directly either by calling 877-673-1153 or going to the following link and clicking the LIVE HELP button on the right:

The process to boot from CD or USB can be different depending on your compputer.
The services.exe file should be located at C:\Windows\System32 -
Inappropriate?Argh! I had this all weekend, and gave up and reinstalled from scratch. I copied the whole hard drive to another, and scanned that hard drive (with vipre) with a 2nd PC, and didn't find any issues.... so I assume the system software got corrupted.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Chris, I am sorry you had to reinstall it.
Our developers are making sure that it wont cause that to happen again by updating the definitions.
if you have any questions please let us know.
Thanks,

Inappropriate?I had to reinstall as well. While I understand that there is always the possibility of unforeseen problems with any software, I am very disappointed that my A/V program caused this.
I am still using Vipre on a 2nd PC, as I have already paid for it, but on my main PC I have now switched to a different software. My rationale for doing so was based upon the fact that A) I had to install an A/V program anyway, due to the OS reinstall, and B) once bitten, twice shy.
Regardless, I am very appreciative of the attempt by the support staff to assist myself and others with these types of problems.
Good luck to those continuing to use this product.
