Problem with automatic updates disabling every day!!
Hello,
On 'updates/ settings' each day I find 'updates' disabled and I have to open the settings and recheck 'allow automatic internet access' and 'allow auto check for updates' and also reenable the Threat Net boxes. I hit 'apply' and all is well for that day. Then the next day the settings all have to be done again as 'automatic updates' is again disabled. This does not seem to be right when automatic updates is part of the Vipre program. Any ideas?

Inappropriate? It is me again! The same thing happened this morning and I had to recheck all the same boxes on the updates/settings page. Having hit 'apply' I would think that would make my settings stay in place.
Please someone check into this.

Inappropriate?Jason,
I am using WiFi during the summer. I have removed any other programs which could cause a conflict, ie, Avast antispyware. . I do have AdAware installed but that has to be run manually and only runs when I activate it. Another thing which is happening is that the Vipre does not seem to be loading or at least the icon does not always appear in the system tray but it may be running in the background. Just a few little quirks, I guess. -
Inappropriate? One of your other programs is probably conflicting with VIPRE, most likely during the install. Try disabling these other programs and then run the install for VIPRE again.
If you contact our support department we can have someone work one-on-one with you. support@sunbelt-software.com or call 877-673-1153 M-F 9am-6pm est. Reference ticket number 001-00-233441.

Inappropriate?OK Jason,
I uninstalled Vipre and, using Enditall, I shut down all working processes and programs, only leaving Windows Explorer running. I then reinstalled Vipre and restarted as directed. I used the Vipre wizard and did my settings. This included checking 'allow automatic internet access' and checking both Threatnet boxes and hit 'apply'. Then since I had the problem of those boxes being unchecked when I did a restart and when I restarted the boxes were unchecked so the automatic updates were disabled. I can easily enable them manually but I think they should stay enabled since I want them to work in the background. I have removed anything which might conflict. I removed Adsgone which completely blocked popups on the web and now I am getting popups. Any suggestions or fixes for this problem?? I really don't like the popups.

Inappropriate?August 2nd. The problem happened again today when I booted up the computer. Updates were disabled and I had to go and recheck ' allow automatic internet access' and check both Threatnet boxes. These settings uncheck everytime I restart the computer and have to be reset in order to have auto updates.
Can someone do something about this?

Inappropriate?Hey Jason,
That problem happened again when I booted up today. Had to recheck 'allow automatic internet access' and both Threatnet boxes to enable updates.

Inappropriate?I think, unfortunately, VIPRE at this moment is truly a P.O.S. I'm going back to Avast/Superantisyware

I suggest you our support department, so we can get more information from you. Reference ticket number, 001-00-238615.
We will need your system information. Below are the instructions on how to get that file to us.
System Information:
Please go to Start/Run and type in "msinfo32". Click Ok. Now go to the File Menu and choose Save. Save this export to your desktop and call it system information. Once it is done, please attach this file to an email and send it to support@sunbelt-software.com.

Inappropriate?Has this problem been resolved, in any of of the various threads started on the topic? I have three machines, all running latest version of VIPRE. All experience a seemingly random disabling of the auto-update feature. Not everyday, but, often. Manual updates -- no problem. Otherwise, the app is running fine. Not knowing whether my systems are updated daily is very annoying, I must say.
Regards,
Chris B. -
Inappropriate?Chris B,
Does this occur any time the system is restarted or is it completely random? Do you have any other security software on the system that may prevent VIPRE from writing changes to the file your settings are stored in? -
It doesn't seem to depend specifically on restarting. It appears random, to me. I have no other security (adware, malware, anti-virus) software that would block file-writing, to my knowledge. Assume any of my three systems are already running. Occasionally (every few days), I'll check current definitions by mousing over the System Tray VIPRE icon and notice that one, or more, of them are not current. Then I'll update manually, again, from the System Tray, with no issue. When I open the VIPRE app and check the Overview tab, it will show Updates Disabled. I can Edit Settings and set it to Automatic, every 12 hours, and that may be fine, for a few days (so, it's saving to a settings file, yes?). My machines do go to Standby, or, Hibernate, after several hours of non-use. But, I don't understand why that would Disable Updates. FWIW, all three machines show Updates Enabled, right now. All are at: SW v3.1.2416, Definition v2493 (1/5/2009 3:02 PM), VIPRE v3.1.1606.1. -
Inappropriate?Chris B,
If you run into this problem again please contact us again at support@sunbeltsoftware.com and reference ticket #001-00-261909 so that we can get some logs and system information from you. -
Will do. Can you tell me what files/info you might want to save? I've got some of my WinXP services disabled (Alerter, Messenger, etc.). Will that affect collection of what you need? FWIW, the VIPRE update disabling hasn't occurred on any of the three machines since I commented on this thread. Figures... -
Inappropriate?Chris, turning off those services shouldn't affect the logs we need. If the updates get disabled again, just contact our support department and we'll take a look at your logs.
Thanks,
Jason Layman -
Inappropriate?Well, if finally happened again. Updates on one of my three VIPRE machines got disabled sometime between 9 Jan and 11 Jan.
I found some logs in C:\Documents and
Settings\Chris&Joan\Application Data\Sunbelt\AntiMalware\logs
(SBAMTray.csv and SBAMUI.csv).
Are they what you need? Others elsewhere?

Inappropriate?Chris B,
If you contact our support department at support@sunbeltsoftware.com we'll get a complete VIPRE diagnostic from you as well as those files. We'll send you an email with instructions and a link to our tool to package those up in one file. -
I posted my message, here, then, sent the same info to support@sunbeltsoftware.com. No reply, yet. -
Inappropriate?Chris B,
I've located and replied to your email so let's continue working there. -
Inappropriate? What's the solution to this problem of automatic updates (and ThreatNet) being disabled in VIPRE? This occurs for me everytime my computer running Vista is re-booted, but is not a problem for the other one running XP. Thanks! Bill
-
Inappropriate?Bill,
Do you happen to have a user account on the system with a space or odd characters in it? -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the tip. I did have user accounts with spaces and ampersands. Unfortunately, the problem persists even after I renamed them and rebooted. Any time VIPRE is shutdown (either manually during current session or after reboot), it loses its automatic updates.
-
Inappropriate?Bill,
We've discovered a bug relating to accounts with these types of symbols. When you rename the account it will still be referenced on the system by the original name. At the moment the only workaround we have for this problem is to create a new account. If you log onto the old account again the settings will be turned back off. I believe this problem has been fixed in the next update for VIPRE which should be coming in a couple weeks. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience. -
Thanks for helping me escape from the twilight zone. If I understand your message correctly, I'll just wait for the VIPRE patch. If that patch does not apply to existing accounts, I think a clean re-install of VIPRE is preferred to re-creating users accounts. Please let me know what and when you can.
