Problem with VIPRE deleting/uninstalling files

I've had a problem - twice now - with updating VIPRE, restarting my computer, and logging on to find almost all of my desktop icons (except for My Computer, My Documents, Recycling Bin, and My Network Places), as well as most of my Start --> All Programs icons.

Upon seeing this, I initially freaked out, wondering why VIPRE had deleted/uninstalled every single program on my computer. However, I went to my HD and found that all my files were, in fact, still there. They did require me to reinstall them though, and in some cases, re-download all of the components.

My protection is set to low, and the chance that it is a virus that got past VIPRE is remote. I strictly use the computer for creating music and gaming.
