Problems with SPF & wireless network adapter
I have a Lenovo laptop, Series 3000 C100, Model 0761-3HG with XP Pro SP3.
I was previously running Norton Internet Security 2008 alongside Counterspy (latest release) but seeing as my Norton subscription was coming to an end (and I read such good things about VIPRE), I bought an unlimited home license for both VIPRE and SPF.
HOWEVER, SPF does not seem to play well at all with the wireless adapter on my Lenovo laptop (Driver: Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver Version 4.10.47.2).
With wi-fi already on and working fine, installing SPF on the laptop reboots with no internet connection - the radio is on, the adapter is enabled, but it cannot find a network. I even added the network manually (choosing the Broadcom Wireless adapter) by IP & netmask - but nothing.
If I select "Repair", or try to disable the adapter (or anything else to do with the adapter, like uninstall from Device Manager), the machine locks up.
However if I uninstall SPF, my wifi connection magically comes back.
If I then disable the wireless adapter and turn off the wifi radio, THEN install SPF, I get a dialog box asking me if this is a trusted network - I click "yes", and get my wifi connection back (hurrah!).
However it's a short-lived victory - when I reboot, I have nothing again.
Each time I install I'm using the "Advanced" setting.
I have lost most of my weekend messing around trying to get this to work - am close to giving up... Currently waiting for an XP System Restore point to restore and thought I'd give this forum another go.
PS. Is it right that VIPRE uses 60-80% CPU when running a scan? It seems to do this across the PCs I have installed it on at home so far - Vista Ultimate 32bit, Win XP Pro SP2...
Thanks for any help,
Chris

Inappropriate?I have a similar problem with this software.

Inappropriate? Here's what I did on my Sunday. Below, unless specifically stated
otherwise, the information provided applies to both IBM a31p Thinkpads
running XP Pro SP3.
(1)
(a) Using the Windows Add/Remove utility, I removed the firewall on
both machines.
(b) After rebooting both machines, I removed all files under
C:/Program Files/Sunbelt Software/Personal Firewall
as detailed in the documentation.
(c) I ran ccleaner to clear the Registry (a lot of stuff remained).
(d) Contrary to the documentation, in fact my Windows firewall was not
restored on either machine, and I had to reset it manually -- a poor
security risk of the installation.
(2)
I checked that under the regular Windows firewall, I had both wired and
wireless connections runing just fine. I.e., I connected (via Firefox and
pings to google.com) with ease with both wired and wireless connections
active, and with the wired disconnected, etc.
(3)
Keeping both wired and wireless connections open on both machines, I
reinstalled the Sunbelt firewall (hoping that it would recognize both
when I restarted). On all my installs and re-installs, I have picked the
"Simple" options, and always rebooted immediately when prompted.
(4)
After rebooting, one of the machines could not connect to the internet
(under either wired or wireless??). (This problem did not occur in the
first installation.) On that machine, I could disable the firewall in the
tray and then could enter the registration and also update the software
(like which was called for on the other machine). After updating the
version, I could no longer connect to the internet on that machine.
(5)
(a) On the machine where the re-intallation seemed to go well, I tried
connecting to the internet as in (2). However, I am back to Square One.
I still could not connect via wireless, even though my wireless icon
shows a connection. Bummer!
(b) Note that on both machines, the wireless icon was showing active, but
in some unsecured mode (not seen in the total absence of the SB firewall),
which makes me wonder if this firewall cannot handle encrypted connections
from PC <-> router? If so, this is unlike any other firewall I've used.
(6)
(a) Before trying anything else, on the machine thatr was not responding
properly, I re-did steps (1)-(3) on that machine. (BTW, this all is
really a pain in the ...!) This reinstall went through the initial
stages properly, getting a new version and permitting registration.
(b) However, after updating to the new version the internet connection
dropped (with both wired and wireless connected -- verify with ipconfig
/all). I had to disable the wireless to regain internet service (or
possibly disable the firewall as I did in (4). When I re-enable the
internet connections (shows working just fine in the tray) the internet
connection drops again.
(7)
So, now the wireless must be turned off on one machine to even connect to
the internet via wired only. On both machines, the wireless icon show it
working properly, but no connection when I pull out the wired connection.
(8)
I also bought and purchased Vipre three days ago when I purchased
the Personal Firewall. I think it is understandable that I have some
reservations about any Sunbelt software at this time. However, I will
wait until I speak with support to see if these problems can go away.

Inappropriate?Lester,
We may need to add both network adapters into the firewall, it may only be detecting only one for some reason, or this may be a problem with the NDIS filter in the new version. Can you please contact our support department with your system information and the SPF version you have installed? Support@sunbelt-software.com.
System Information:
Please go to Start/Run and type in "msinfo32" and click Ok. Now go to the File Menu and choose Save. Save this export to your desktop and call it system information. Once it is done, please attach this file to your email to support.

Inappropriate?Jason:
I was on the phone with Tim, and it does seem like a problem with your new adapter. I sent him all the sys and log info.
Thanks.
