RDP Issues
No matter what I try I have been unable to RDP to my Win XP machine (running KSPF) from a Vista machine on my network (which is in the trusted area). Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Blake

Inappropriate?Hello Blakeh,
Thank you for posting, sorry to hear that you are having difficulty.
What you can do is create a packet filter for Remote Desktop
1. Open SPF,
2. Click on the Network Security tab
3. Click on the Applications tab
4. Click on the packet filter button
5. Choose Add
6. Give this rule a name like, “Remote Desktop.”
7. Add the mstsc.exe file to this rule by clicking on the browse button. Usually located here: C:\WINDOWS\system32
8. Under protocol choose: udp & tcp.
9. Under the Local section, choose Add and click on Port.
10. Type in the port number 3389.
11. Choose Ok
12. Do the same for the Remote section to allow outbound communication
13. Under the Direction section, choose both and then keep it set to Permit.

Perry

Inappropriate?Hi Perry-
First of all, thanks so much for the quick response. It is greatly appreciated. I think this "Get Satisfaction" concept is a very good one.
I went ahead and tried what you suggested, but I am still unable to connect to my machine. I know it has something to do with SPF because as soon as I right-click on the tray icon and select 'Disable Firewall' I can connect.
Are there any other areas I can check to see what is blocking the connection? I can give you as much detail as you'd like about my network setup.
Thanks again,

Inappropriate?Hello Blakeh,
Could you please open SPF
Go to Network Security > Nips > Please set nips to Medium.
Please let me know if this works for you and we will create a rule for you.

Inappropriate? If I open SPF and click on Intrusions > NIPS the "Enable Network Intrusions Protection System" box is not ticked (so I am not using NIPS). If I do tick the box and then set everything to "Permit", I am still unable to connect to the machine.
Thanks again for any insight you might have.

Inappropriate?Hello Blake,
Could you please try to disable the firewall by right clicking the (shield icon) near the clock in the bottom right hand corner and choose disable firewall. Once disabled could you please attempt to connect; please advise of the outcome. Also, Vista does require that you enable RDP via command prompt before it can be used. Has that step been done?
Regards,

As I said above, if I disable the firewall, I am able to connect to the machine. All the settings for RDP are set correctly. There is still some setting within SPF that is stopping me from making a connection.
Thanks,

I've tried everything in the suggestions above and I still don't "get satisfaction". No response to my phone call (left message). Email support hasn't been helpful. I'll try calling again. The log for the blocked attempt shows exactly the settings, ipaddress, that I put in the packet filter. If I disable the firewall I get through.
I'm thinking of uninstalling and changing to another firewall.

Inappropriate?Hi Jack,
I apologize for the inconveniences. We have been unexpectedly busy over the Holidays. I will be more then happy to assist you, too.
For troubleshooting measures, let’s try disabling some of the modules in SPF individually to try and narrow down which one may be the problem.
Disable the “network security”.
That didn’t help? Re-enable it.
Disable “Web Filtering”.
That didn’t help? Re-enable it.
Also, Disable the individual “Intrusions” modules.
Did disabling any of those help?
Let me know if disabling one of these did the trick.
If you any further problems please feel free to contact our support team at support@sunbelt-software.com or by Phone at 1-877-673-1153 M-F 9am-6pm EST and we will have someone work directly with you.
Thanks,

Thanks, Tim. I'll follow the steps to try to locate the problem. I'll report back. May take a few days.
Jack
