Inappropriate?Hello Hank,
Thank you for posting, Sorry to hear that you are having difficulty.
Your definitions may be getting stuck on previous download. Try clearing out your history and temp files from Internet Explorer, then try to download again.
If that does not work, Could you please let me know which version number and product that you are using so that we can get this resolved for you.
Warm Regards,
Perry -
I'am having the same problem. I have cleaned out my history and temp files, still cannot update definitions. I'am using ver. 3.1.2416. Any Ideas? -
Inappropriate?Thanks for the quick reply!
I restored my system to a earlier date and that seems to have fixed the problem. If it happens again I let you know.
Thanks again
Hank
I’m happy

Inappropriate?I am having the same problem this moning!!
. I cannot restore, because I don't have any recent restore points. I use CCleaner to clean out my temp files, and it did not help.
I am using Vipre software version 3.1.2315
Definitions version 2232
Vipre version 3.1.1606.1
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I'm also having the same problem. I cleared my history and temp files with no success. Like markofkane, I am using Vipre software version 3.1.2314 with definitions version 2232.
Looking at the log, I have had no problem with definition updates up until this morning.
I’m also frustrated
-
I had a similar problem: the check for updates ran OK at 11.37 (UK time) this morning, but failed from 13.00 onwards. I'm running Vipre 3.1.2315. I then cleared my Temporary Internet Files via the Internet Options/Delete Browsing History facility under Tools in Internet Explorer, and have had no problems since, i.e. the check for updates works OK. Don't know whether this might help you? -
Inappropriate? It downloaded the updates just now, 7 hours later. I done all that clearing history in IE, and it did not help me earlier. Only after shutting off the computer for 7 hours and starting it up and trying again, it worked. May have been a server problem???
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?I just downloaded the CounterSpy trial - Version 3.1.2315, which installed with the 2205 definitions. When I hit the "Check for Updates", with or without the "Completely refresh my definitions" checked, I receive an error "Http:404" which usually indicates it can't find a site. So far, I'm not impressed with the trial if I can't update the product 10 minutes after I installed it! Any thoughts?
I’m disappointed so far
-
Inappropriate? There was an updating glitch yesterday, but it should be fixed now. Try checking for updates again.

Jason Layman -
Inappropriate? My Vipre system log shows "Download of threat definitions failed due to internet connection problems". Is the problem at the sunbelt-software server side? I helped a client download and install the trial version this morning, and the update went smoothly on her machine. My version is 3.1.2243 (risk defs 2230).
I’m concerned, because I've recommended the product to quite a few clients
-
Inappropriate? You may want to try upgrading your version of Vipre, I noticed you're a version behind. You should be on 3.1.2315. Also make sure that no other security program or firewall is blocking Vipre from updating.
Vipre 3.1.2315 Install:

Inappropriate?Thank you Jason. Yesterday evening I attempted to update numerous times -- mostly the download would not start at all, and sometimes the download would start, and then fail. Later in the evening it worked. No changes on my side, except to try and try again. (Server issue?)
Thank you for the download link. I have downloaded and installed the newer version of the program onto the laptop this morning. Will the program not update itself automatically, together with the updated definition files?
I’m still wondering how healthy and automatic the update process is
-
Inappropriate?Hank
Sorry your still having the update problem.
In the VIPRE window press on the update button, and this should bring you to the Update settings window. Right under the "Check for Updates" button there is a box labeled "Completely Refresh full Definitions". Check that box then press the "Check for Updates" button. If this dose not work please write me back and let me know. -
Inappropriate?I have Counterspy Ver 3.1.3125. This was updated from 2.x to 3 last week. Tried to update definitions but got the "Internet Connection Error" message. I then cleared the temp files from explorer (as suggested) and now it appears to work. But, I got a "Update failed" message, and when I cancelled back to the main screen, it now shows that update to ver 2300 definitions worked successfully.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?I have cleaned out my temp and history files and still having the same problem. I'am using ver. 3.1.2416. I was using the earlier ver. when the problem first occurred. I thought downloading and installing newer ver. would fix the problem, but no joy.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? If the recent update did not fix your problem, (update version 3.1.2416) please contact our support department so we can get more information and investigate this further. You can contact us at support@sunbelt-software.com or call, 877-673-1153.

Inappropriate?I am Starman002.
I have this problem also. I cleared out the temp files & history in IE6.
I have Current Software Version 3.1.2315 Current Definition 2362, Current VIPRE version 3.1.1601.1.
Can you help?
I’m sad & very frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I am a newbie here, but I think my VIPRE problem is related. I get prompted to install the downloaded definitions, but these are .2416, when I am already running .2422.
I manually deleted the .2416, but still get the problem.
To make matters worse, I am away from my home PC for the next 2 weeks, and not able to drive it myself.
What are the next steps? -
Scrumpy_Jack,
3.1.2416 is the most recent program version. VIPRE was probably trying to upgrade the software not the definitions. Just hit Ok on that update and it should take you through the software upgrading process. If you encounter any problems, just let us know.
Regards,
Jason Layman -
Thanks Jason, but I'd tried running the upgrade, and it fails to complete, and leaves the whole of VIPRE turned OFF. That upsets the Vista security module, and generates warning messages on screen.
That in turn upsets the main current system user ;-)
I won't be in front of that PC for 12 days. Is there anything else to try between now & then?
Cheers, Scrumpy -
What error message are you getting? -
Inappropriate?Hank,
After working with the pros for a week, they suggested that I turn off
my DSL and my wireless router for a min. and then turn them back
on. I did as they suggested and it worked. Give that a try.
Irvman -
Inappropriate?I'll let you know in about 12 days time, when I'm next in front of the system.
Cheers, Scrumpy -
Inappropriate?Harmonyman replies: I have been having the same problem for 4 days or so now, and I never had this problem before.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?i have the same problem too; I cleaned all history, temps etc
-
Inappropriate? We have been making changes to some of our servers requiring them to go offline temporarily. These intermittent updating problems should be correctly shortly.

Inappropriate?I installed VIPRE recently, and have had numerous "Risk definition update has failed". I have tried cleaning internet temp & history, and Windows temp files. This has not fixed the problem. After the update fails, when I resart the computer VIPRE has active protection turned off and it will not turn on. Restoring a backup of the definition folder usually fixes the problem, but sometimes a full VIPRE directory restore is needed.
I would like the option of manually downloading the current definition files so it can be updated manually.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Sorry for the inconvenience. As Jason stated, we've been making changes to some of our servers and some people have had issues updating while this was going on. If you would still like it, you can download the manual definition installer here:
http://sunbelt-software.com/ihs/VCDef... -
Inappropriate?Nick,
Thanks for the link allowing me to manually download the definition.
I run separate instalations of WinXP on my computer. One for general use and one for games & testing. If I boot using my Games & Testing drive, VIPRE updates successfully. If I boot using my every day drive, the update fails, but I can shut down VIPRE and copy the VIPRE directory from the updated drive to my failed drive to get around the problem.
Joe
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I had this problem as well, I tried every fix recommended but nothing worked, I even tried AVG Free and it also would not update. On their support page I finally found the answer.
A Trojan had changed the DNS server settings in my network connection.
So here's the fix; open Network connections in Control Panel, open the Properties page of your network connection, double click on the TCP/IP entry and check that the settings are correct, Mine was reset from Automatic to a fixed DNS entry by the Trojan, repeat for each of your network connections.
Hope this helps
Gonzo

Thanks for the information Gonzalo! I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who have this same problem. :)

Inappropriate?I downloaded the recent definitons manually using the link Nick provided. The file was 60.2 MB. It executed, updated, and restarted VIPRE.
Happy Camper. -
Inappropriate?I tried doing a manual download and install. I got:
script:c:\temp\VCDefs.vbs
line :53
Char:1
Error: Invalid Syntax
Code:800401E4
Source:(null)
Now what???
I’m verry frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Stanrich,
It may be that your scripting files are out of date, or you don't have VB scripting enabled on that machine. Use the below links to download and install the most recent scripting updates for your operating system, then try running the definitions script again.
Microsoft Windows scripting file for Windows XP and 2000:
http://tinyurl.com/yu4xkf
Vista 32bit vbscript.dll reregister:
http://apollo.sunbelt-software.com/ih...
Regards,
Jason Layman -
OK, did that.
Now I get:
"Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update."
vbscript is running. Any other suggestions?? -
Inappropriate?Stanrich,
Are you running XP or Vista? If it's XP, make sure you are running the script from an admin account. If it's Vista, right click on the file and choose run as administrator.
If you need any further assistance, please contact our support department and we can look into what exactly is going on here. support@sunbelt-software.com or call, 877-673-1153.

Inappropriate? In order to make it easier to manually update the definitions we have created a website with instructions, and a simpler installation process.

Counterspy Link

If you have any problems or questions on these steps, please create a new post, or contact us at support@sunbeltsoftware.com. -
Inappropriate?Something else I have discovered blocking the automatic updates (not manual), are remnants of a Norton or McAfee uninstall. Run the removal tool from those products (located on their websites), then reinstall Vipre and try again. I've had some that will only work after I complete this step, while others have been fine without it. The error message I get before running the tool is "Unable to update due to internet connection...", even though the connection is fine.
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for the tip. I've seen this in the past as well. It's always a good idea to run the removal tools for those products when uninstalling them anyhow as they tend to leave quite a few traces on the system which can cause problems with any other security software installed.
