Version 3.1 Scan Freezes
Just upgraded to Counterspy v3.1 from v2.5. Can not complete a scan. Each time it freezes somewhere in my (System Disk)"\Program Files\Intel folder. Running Win XP Pro SP3. During freeze, active protection turned off.

Inappropriate?Hi dschit1,
Let’s try disabling rootkit detection from the scans by following the instructions below to see if that stops the issue.
Open CounterSpy,
Go to FILE/SETTINGS,
Click the tab for “Scan Options”,
From there uncheck all “Enable Rootkit Detection” options and click OK.
If you continue to experience any more problems please contact our support team at support@sunbelt-software.com or by Phone at 1-877-673-1153 M-F 9am-6pm EST and we will have someone work directly with you. Please reference ticket id 001-00-237427
Thanks,

Inappropriate?Turn off rootkit scanning in Scan Options.
We're working to find out why this is happening on a small number of systems. -
Add my name to the list of users who can't complete a scan. Quick scan works, but not deep scan or custom scan -
Inappropriate?Forgot to add. I was trying a Custom Scan of C: drive only and CSpy quit at 168 minutes. In looking in Scan options, the rootkit detection is not checked. So, that fix won't work for me.
-
Inappropriate?Well, now I can't "abort" the scan, close the program, nor close the program through taskmanager. Taskmanager tells me in processes that access is denied. CounterSpy does not show up in taskmanager under "applications". Guess reboot is in order. Frustrating.

Inappropriate? Also upgraded from ver 2.5 using XP Pro SP2 - very robust setup. Custom scan hangs on C:\ drive \system32 folder, commonly 57 minutes into the scan. Does not hang when scanning other (non system) partitions. Uninstall / reinstall led to PC not booting at all and had to re-image using Acronis - a VERY reliable product BTW. Prompt reply from CS Tech Support - but no resolution yet.
I’m paying the techs $60 an hour

Inappropriate?090925: Progress report - CS tech support asked for deep scan to be done in Safe mode - did this but scan still stalls.
I’m waiting

Inappropriate? Is the scan still freezing the on same location each time? Have you tried to turn off any other security software you have running then starting another scan?
-
Inappropriate?I just update to Counterspy v3.1 today after countless 'apply software updates' messages from the program every time I tried to apply an update and am I disappointed. For one, the program tells me there is an incompatibility problem with Kaspersky 2009 which is disappointing because I never had this issue with v2 and I need active protection its saved me so many times!! Will there be serious implications if I enable active protection? Also I had the same issue as everyone else, about 1min or 2mins into scanning my computer jus freezes and I have to perform a hard restart. Mouse wont respond, music stops. Now I might think twice about updating to Viper next year :( Sad I love this program and have recommended it to many hope they won't have the same issues as me...
I’m disappointed that there is no resolution

Inappropriate? You can have both counterspy and Kaspersky on the same machine, you just need to disable kaspersky's anti-spyware active protection to make sure there is no conflict. This was also true in the previous version.
For your scan problem, try this, open cs then click file then options. In here click the scan options tab, then uncheck root kit detection for quick, deep, and custom scan. Then run another scan and let me know if it freeze's again. -
Inappropriate?Ok, disabled Root kit detection and that seems to have solved that issue. Thanks, for KasperySky, the options I see are to diable online phinishin security (which definatlely isn't it), disable anti malware defence or proactive defense. Which one corresponds to the anti-anti spyware active protection?
-
Inappropriate?i am not sure, the anti malware defense or proactive defense sound like the active protection. Try and disable them one at a time and see if you have any performance issues. Or contact Kaspersky and see what they say is the active protection

Inappropriate?Peterh, Re your comment 1 month ago:
[ Is the scan still freezing the on same location each time? Have you tried to turn off any other security software you have running then starting another scan? ]
This is already on ticket 001-00-243481 which answers your question.
Solved this problem by abandoning ver 3.1 and reverting to v 2.5.1043 for now. However definitions only appear to be available up to 890.
Is there any way to access later definitions until we can solve this ?
We have several clients with same issue. Sunbelt may be unaware that unlike end users, corporate users and specifiers simply can't justify hours of testing and disabling other (perfectly functioning) apps to accommodate CounterSpy's foibles. We simply have to ditch the ailing product and move on. It is noticeable that CounterSpy users have extended considerable tolerance to Sunbelt - far more than they might to Symantec and others - and it's a pity that the issues are not sorted.
BTW - password reset does not work with FireFox on GetSatisfaction.
I’m . . . . . . . . . .

Inappropriate? You can download and run the following program to update Counterspy 2.5
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ihs/c...
Once you are up to date it should be able to update on its own. -
@Peterh,
The link you give takes me to
http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Home-H...
which is not at all what you claim it to be. -
Inappropriate?ZetechmanWe changed the way the manual definitions work to make it simpler, we changed it in as many of the older posts as we could, and in our knowledge base, that link was one we could not change.
Those instructions on the page should allow you to manually update to the latest definitions.
